Picked one up at a store and noticed the battery was kinda loose...so I opened it and it has a LEOCH 12v 5.5AH battery inside. Seems too small for the ratings on the box.

Model: SX650U

Let me know....

I used to have one but it quit on me quite a bit sooner then I felt it should have, same with a buddy of mine.

Pretty much stick with APC or Tripp-Lite for UPS's as a result.

I had a cyberpower ups some years ago. It failed just after the warranty expired. I bought an apc and I have had it for at least five years now with no problems at all.

I have one. We got a ton of ice from Sandy. It took down branches, trees and every type of line you can imagine. The power fluctuated rapidly here kicking the UPS off and on battery quickly. It killed the UPS which sucked since I planned on using it to charge a phone if we had an emergency. Luckily the warranty had about a month left and I was able to send mine back for a return. If the power starts kicking off and on again I'm powering down and unplugging the unit from the wall.

Most UPSes I've opened from APC etc tend to have two 7.2ah batteries running in a 24v config. So yeah that battery is a tad small, it will work it's just you get way less run time. It's also being run at double the current which means even faster discharge, as the ah rating is based on a specific discharge rate. The higher the load the ah rating actually starts do go lower.

It will work fine to protect from power flickers etc though, just don't expect a very long run time if power goes out completely. It's pretty much just to shut down properly and that's it.

Just realized the 360w rating. That's tiny. I would not run a typical gaming PC off that. Maybe run network stuff or monitors only but not a full blown PC unless it's a workstation with integrated graphics.

I just went and looked still have my old/dead Cyberpower CP425GA for some reason ... it has a single battery model CPS5.5-12.

Battery can be replaced for around $25 (refurb) but I didn't bother because it barely had enough power to let even an efficient PC shut down properly and lasted about a year. Ended up replacing it with an APC XS-1200 I found on a back shelf at Staples with a damaged box for $35. (the tall beige one with an 80 mm fan in the back) which is still humming along 12+ years later. Been awhile but as I recall the XS has one big battery too lazy to look.

You ever test that ups? Chances are the battery is dead.

The older APC were rock solid but some of there newer stuff isn't that good. Smaller batteries, overstated run times, buggy operation.

I just picked up a Cyberpower on clearance table. I normally don't buy them, I will say the software is kinda nice.

Just for a media server, pulling 64 watts, set to "preserve battery power" hibernation mode after 4 minutes. I wanted a seperate unit for just the server itself.

Oh yeah that will be fine then.

And yeah some newer APCs are badly designed. I don't know if this changed, but the newer models that are slim and tall, the battery actually goes in from the bottom, and the only thing holding the battery in place is the friction of the connector. I've had so many of these units where the battery just falls out. It only falls about half a cm, but it's enough for it to no longer be connected, as it's a fixed connector and not a wire. A fix is to shove a piece of cardboard between the battery cover and the battery and it forces the battery up into the power connector. Or I guess you could put the UPS upside down lol.

Their SUA series are still top notch. The cheaper ones are not the same.

I'll never own Cyberpower again, they are junk. My experience:

Cyberpower 1200VA runtime = 7 minutes when new.
APC SUA 750 (750VA) runtime = 107 minutes.

Monitors and network equipment are on a separate UPS, an APC Back-UPS 600VA bought new in 1999. It's had the batteries replaced a few times of course. No idea how long that will run, with such a small load it goes for hours.

The Cyberpower died in less than a year. Not the battrey, it would just no longer turn on.

I own a few CyberPower and APC units. I've only had one CyberPower unit die on me so far. It was kind of a bummer because it cost me $150 and you're plumb out of luck if it's out of warranty. Since it's just a charging failure, I've been tempted to tear it apart and look at it.

UPSes have nice parts in them, so when they fail I always keep the PCBs and desolder stuff as needed. Most of the failure modes I've seen were not worth fixing, like transformer going. Suppose I could rewind it but to get the ratios just right would be tricky.

Can either of you recommend me a certain UPS ? I've heard APC has overall better stats vs. Cyberpower, but god damn all the reviews of people saying theirs blew up or died quickly are making me cower in fears.

I own 6 of the Cyber Power UPS units (some are the PFC pure sine series, some just the regular "Intelligent LCD") , one still in use I bought in 2012 with the original batteries no less!.

Never had one issue with any of them.

I have one on my NAS. It's a 1500VA, and I think it's great. It 8 years old now, gives the NAS 57 minutes of battery power. That's plenty of time for the NAS to shutdown safely.

I hear Eaton is pretty much top notch for UPSes, though I rarely see them for sale. I always see mostly APC. I think when it comes to <$200 consumer UPSes they're probably all very similar.

I've had Ultras and APCs mostly. In general I have good luck with both, but I've had a fair amount of failures now that I think about it... like they seem to all flat out die after a while, but they do last long enough like 10ish years. The Ultras that I bought said "no user serviceable parts inside" not even the battery, but when you own a simple screwdriver set, practically everything has user serviceable parts inside.
