except the original quake/quakeworld and starsiege: tribes.

q2 was too cartoony for me.

Quake brought about online game playing, much more than doom or doom 2 ever did. It introduced rocket jumping. It introduced, to a large degree, circle strafing, much more than doom or doom 2 ever did, due to the multiplayer online aspect.
It had two official addon packs:
Quake Mission Pack 1: Scourge Of Armagon
Quake Mission Pack 2: Dissolution Of Eternity

and last but not least, a kickass soundtrack by Trent Reznor of NiN.

I spent many days/nights playing this, first on an AMD 586 pc, then on my neighbors Cyrix 166 with 32 mb of ram, and lastly on a p166 overclocked to 200 mhz with 64 mb of ram and a Monster 3d voodoo 1 card.

Starsiege tribes was awesome because you could play as one of 3 geared guys, light, medium or heavy, and then your choice of weapons also changed. You could fly, ski jump, and in general, just kick major ass throughout the whole game.

Man I have to go home and find my copy!

I remember back in college there was a group of us ( about 6-7 people ) that used to play in the computer lab. We weren't supposed to be playing but the security guard that worked there would get us our own room and would stand at the door watching us play. He'd warn us if any of the lab workers were coming lol

Quake 2 is quite possibly one of the best shooters ever released. Not only did the original game's single player and multiplayer own, the game was heavily modifiable. It spawned so many awesome mods - Weapons Factory, Gloom, Instagib, Excessive, and tons of others.

Anyone remember HEAT.NET? Ah man, those were the days of the dot boom and free stuff just for gaming online. I still have about a dozen of their shirts I wear to this day.

No need for the CD anymore.

For the full game, you first need to download the demo (v3.14), then download the patch (v3.20) and upgrade it. I believe they are hosted through fileplanet, so you might have to make an account (it's free) in order to download it. The bare minimum link is an ftp site, so you don't need an account; just download the .rar file.

Here's a link to the demo: Q2 Demo (3.14)

Here's a link to the patch: Patch to v3.20

This patch contains the regular game with online player capability including capture the flag.

Edit - Here's a link to a 16mb download of the game (doesn't include capture the flag, but you can play tourney, team deathmatch, etc): 16 mb game.

Have fun.

Q2 CTF with the rune package was awesome. i'd hunt down and kill the guy with the autodoc (if i didn't find it first, which i did quite often), then grab a double barrel shotgun and defend the flag the rest of the game. about half the time i wouldn't die for the rest of the game.

loved q1...never got into q2...actually hated the large maps. Quake 3 was great and I can still rail with the best of them and love(d) the freezetag mod.

I remember Quake 2. I used to hang out in the MSN Gaming Zone in my early days of playing it. Then got into a clan on a mirc server, and just hung out there.

Probably my FAVORITE mod for that game was Rocket Arena 2. So much fun.

MSN Gaming Zone, there was another mod called Freeze tag, or something like that, which was really fun too.

I miss those days, lol.

are there unreal tournament demo multiplayer arenas open still?

I liked that area with the tank, car, flying thing and multi man humvee.

I think my favorite all time deathmatch game was Doom 2. My buddy and I used to play Map 16 for hours on end over dial up. Our house phone used to be busy all the time, lol.

Unreal Tournament was pretty darn good too.

They have Doom on Xbox live? How is the game play on the Xbox? Did they increase the resolution or is it at 320x240?

The same can be said for doom. There were thousands of mods for doom. I used to make my own maps enemies, and weapons.
