AnyDVD or DVDCopy?

From what I'm gathering, to be able to rip current DVDs to my HD, I'm going to have to pay for a decoder. I used AnyDVD's free trial, but that's over, and it's about $85 for a 2-year license, or $125 (on sale) for a lifetime license... not cheap.

How about DVDCopy? It doesn't cost as much, but I don't think it has the features AnyDVD HD has (like HD and BD.)

Anyone have experience with both of these, or maybe with limitations of DVDCopy?

How about DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink? That's what I use - they're free.

I ran a search on this before I posted... much of what I have seen are issues with DVD Decrypter unable to decode current releases.

I don't know anything about DVD Shrink.

The nice thing about AnyDVD/AnyDVDHD is that Slysoft is very proactive about updates, another is that it allows you to use whatever software you want to work with the DVD/bluray.

A downside is the expense -- it has gotten very expensive relative to what it used to be. It also doesn't handle cinavia protection, but pretty much nothing on the market does either at this point. Cinavia support was supposed to become a required feature in all Bluray players effective 02/01/2012 and later, so it is going to become a major issue at some point.

I use anyDVD and it's worth every dollar. Backups my collection so my kids don't damage the disc.

That's where I'm at... I want to clean out the video closet and prevent damage to the disks we wind up keeping. We've already replaced our BD copy of Star Trek once...

I didn't see that version... maybe I'll give it a try.

With either Anydvd or DVDFab, if you buy the Lifetime license, you are good for all future upgrades, including newer versions. If you do not buy the lifetime license, then you can only upgrade while within the time frame your license is good for. The program will still work after that, but if newer encryption is being used on newer dvds, the program may not do the job. Personally, I would get the lifetime license (which I have done for DVDFAB) it is worth the initial cost. I never tried Anydvd, but I do have CloneCD, also from Slysoft. Their products have done what they said they can do.

I'm probably going to wind up with AnyDVD... it's just that $125 is half-way to my GPU...

I went with AnyDVD with the lifetime license, upgraded to the HD one when they were doing away with (supposedly) the lifetime licenses. Updates are frequent and it works great. Figured spending the money for lasting use was worth it.

Tried MakeMKV, and have yet to get it to rip a BD. It blames the drive (Asus) when it throws up and dies, but DVDfab chews right through every disc I've fed it, putting out MKV, AVI, MPG, you name it. Great program, worth every penny.

I was using the free DVDFab decrypter, and it wouldn't read Cars 2. So I decided to pony up for AnyDVDHD. I bought the 4 year license because the price jump up to lifetime was a bit too much, and I figure in 4 years the landscape will be different enough.

I tried using MakeMKV but my WDTV doesn't support sub-titles in MKVs, so that was out.

So far I'm happy with AnyDVDHD. I use Clown_BD to rip BDs direct from disc to MT2S. (For DVDs I just have AnyDVD rip an ISO and plop the ISO on my file server. The WDTV plays these just like as if you put the real disc in [e.g. menus and all].)

I'm going to go ahead and get the AnyDVD HD and just be done with it. It was pretty idiot-proof (which is a good thing for me) and didn't have any problems in the test-bed of videos I used.

I set clock to 1-1-2010 and then install the trial. Then set to that time every time I want to use it. I been trying to figure out where in the registry it keeps track of that time, but no luck so far.

How about you just buy it if you're going to use it constantly? It's WELL worth the cost.

Dude, really???

Do yourself a favor, before you run and spend a lot of money on software... Check out and see if DVDDecrypter REALLY has problems with the titles you have.

I've ripped thousands of DVDs over the last 10 years or so... no, I'm not exaggerating. During all this time, I only came across four or five which had a copy protection so strong that DVDDecrypter couldn't tackle. And I solved those with another application, DVDFab - which others have already strongly recommended.

I would just go with DVDFab (or better HD Decrypter within DVDFab ... as I said before, I wish you could install/get just HD Decrypter)

I would 2nd the dvdfab recommendation. The plus side of using that is the program is updated very frequently. The other good part is you can send the software developer the text output of your particular movie and they will usually be able to fix the problem and release a new version containing the fix. I have personally emailed them and told them some issues along with the logs and they shortly after released a new version addressing the problems I pointed out.

Which WDTV do you have? I have the WDTV Live and the newer Streamer version, both play subtitles for mkv files fine. In fact, I just bought a 2nd Streamer from Newegg since they had it for $80, the deal was posted on Slickdeals and the thread was huge, everybody was buying it.

BTW AnyDVD and DVDFab are top notch, most of the rippers and reviews I've read recommend them. AnyDVD might be a little bit better.

I have the new SMP model. I ripped a few blu-rays with MakeMKV and couldn't get subtitles to work when I played them back. Maybe I was doing something wrong.

That's because MakeMKV rips to BR's native sub format - PGS, which many many programs do not support.
