Hellooooo!!!!!

DooDz!

I gots meself a pwoblem, ya he're?

I have the following setup at home:

Server: PIII 500 Connected to Internet VIA Rogers@Home Cable

Workstation: Duron 650@850 Connected to net VIA ICS on Server.

The server has 2 ethernet cards in it, one for the house LAN, and one for Rogers@Home.

Now, how would I go about making the DURON system, the Workstation, the webserver for my website? I have NO clue whatsoever on how to do this

My brother wants me to stop using the webserver on his computer (the PIII Server) and put it on my computer, but I don't know how to do that

I think that should be all you need to know......

Oh yeah, and they are both running Windows 98SE.

Well, if you'll still be using the other machine as the gateway and the Duron will be behind it, you'll need to use some sort of port forwarding software. This is easily done with IPMasq in Linux, but in Windows I have no idea if it's even possible.

Just move all of the files for your website from the PIII to the Duron, then go into the properties for your web server software on the PIII (you should be able to do this with any Internet server software) and set all of the directories to their locations on your second computer. The PIII will still technically be the web server, since it will answer all incoming requests, but your Duron system will be the host for all of the files and web site content..

There are other ways to do this, but this would probably be the easiest, as long as your brother doesn't mind having the web software continue to run in the background. (You will have to have some kind of software running to redirect the internet requests, no matter how you end up configuring your system, so you might as well just leave whatever is already there..)

Since they're both running Win98SE, can't you just switch the NIC for the cable access to the Duron, so the Duron is now running ICS for the PIII? That would give the Duron the external IP too, so it could run the web hosting software.

Now that you've received some help here in Distributed Computing, do you have those cows crckin' for Team AnandTech? A PIII and a Duron would be some nice additions!

Feel free to browse through the TA website TA HERE! for more info if you think you might be interested.

That link I provided tells how to do port forwarding with ICS. Then he can maintain his current setup; he won't have to change hardware or reconfigure the network.

MTP is a great guy that hangs out in the IRC channel, and I suggested that he post the question here, knowing how knowledgeable and helpful we can be.

MTP is cracking for Sysopt, but that never stopped us from helping a fellow cracker before, even if he wasn't on TA. I would hate to see it stop now.

So if his post here bothers anyone, they can take it up with me.

<<So if his post here bothers anyone, they can take it up with me.>>

Was that in response to my post?? I wasn't intending to make him feel unwelcome, quite the opposite in fact.... I wasn't aware he was crackin' for Sysopt, though I probably still would have pitched him for TA had I known.

I too will back up MTP if anyone gives him any grief, but I don't think anyone has in this thread.

awwwww

/me wipes a tear from his eye, following Jator and Ray's post

hehe.

The PIII is the server, but it won't be for long. I am going to get a new server for my network, which will prolly be running Win98SE or Win2K. But I will still want to host the website on my Duron computer, because the new Server won't be very fast.

Right now, the PIII is the server, and it is using ICS for the Duron. I don't want to have the software on the PIII, because my bro restarts it all the time, and he never remembers to start the program back up.....

I am thinkin that it is too much of a bother to redirect everything, so is there a way to make the program automatically start when the computer starts? I am using SimpleWWW.

Thanks guyz!

Sorry,
Didn't mean to come on so strong, but as I was going back in to edit (and add smilies), my PC froze, and I couldn't get back to the forum until now. :Q

MTP,
You can place a shortcut in the startup folder (\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp)

This will start the prog when someone logs in. you might also see if the webserver software you are using can be installed as a service, and try that.

Ok, cool, I will do that, and when it starts up, he will have to start it, but he will see it, and it will remind him

THANKS RAY!!!
