Anyone around here own a Beagle?

I've been wanting a dog of my own for a while now, but because of my current lease agreement, I couldn't have one. Since I've got my own place now, I want a dog and my fiance is OK with it (thank goodness ).

I've heard that Beagles can be a bit rambunctious and can howl a bit, but are otherwise great family dogs.

Does anyone here have experience with Beagles? How much attention do these buggers need?

And any other recommendations for smallish, sub-20-pound dogs? We have a decent sized yard, but it's not fenced in.

Beagles are hunting dogs. They really need a big yard to do their thing.

Jack Russells are great dogs. I had a Jack and miss the hell out of him.

Beagles need outdoors. They can take up to 2 years to potty train. I had a beagle for about a dozen years. Text Great pets!

I thought that Jack Russells were hyper as hell?

That would have been my first choice but I hear they are too smart for their own good.

There is a beagle across the street, never in my life have a heard a dog bark and howl as loud as that dog does. I'm not kidding, it even scares my dog when he barks nearby. Stay away from Beagles.

Take a look at Shiba Inu's. A good friend of mine has two of them, both around the size your looking for and both excellent dogs. They are a bit more independent than other breeds, but very friendly and loyal.

Yeah beagles are hunting dogs.

Corgies have always seemed like nice dogs to me but I haven't had too much personal experience with them. But they fit your size.

Maybe a Boston Terrier though that is kind of a high strung dog as well.

Honstly most small dogs have a lot of energy.

You can take this test for some ideas.

I don't have as much experience with small breeds. But if you want to get a real dog (greater than 50lbs) I can make a good reccomendation

It really depends on the dog. Mine was very laid back but also loved to play. I have a mini doxie that is 100x as hyper as my Jack was.

They are very smart and will end up training you if you aren't careful. I did a ton of research before I got him and everything worked out fine. Here is one of the forums I used to haunt.

I hate beagles.

Need more info:

Are you active outdoors? Want a high-energy/active dog? How much daily exercise can you provide?

How long will you be away from the house?

How much training are you willing to commit?

If you want a beagle, please choose wisely and well. Some can have huge behavior problems, almost like a P&N poster in their ability to detect slights where there are none and nurse grudges, and endlessly contest for dominance.

Of course, the good ones are wonderful dogs, but if you get one, do your poor dependent bred-for-hunting hound a favor and regularly take him to actual woods where you can let him or her off the leash to follow scent trails and do the one damn thing their entire battery of baked in instincts insist they do.

You'll all be happier for it.

Beagles are great dogs, but they won't do well in an apartment or similar cramped environment. They need lots of room to run and play, and an owner dedicated to spending a lot of time with them, or else they won't be happy and will cause a lot of problems (like bark, howl, make messes, etc).

1) I am active outdoors. I can probably give the dog a half-hour to an hour outside during a jog.
2) I work from home, so I'm usually there.
3) I'm willing to put quite a bit of effort into training.

If you're going to have kids, do NOT get a Boston Terrier or French Bulldog. Have you considered a Puggle? Pug + Beagle, not as stubborn as a Beagle and not as "ugly" as a Pug. I'd also recommend a Corgi or perhaps a Basenji? Might be a little over your weight requirement, but they're nice, docile dogs that are intelligent as hell.

I had a beagle growing up. She was a great dog. Very friendly but she would get into everything. We had to lock our garbage cans so that she couldn't get into them. Also, beagles tend to get fat later in their lives if they don't get a lot of exercise.

I just did the test that datalink7 posted up above and I was looking at the Cocker Spaniel and the Welsh Terrier.

Both seem to fit our likes/accommodations.

I have a beagle that I got from a rescue. I'll put it like this, beagles do have a lot of energy and love attention. I would say a fenced yard is a must unless you have one hell of a good chain and stake in the ground. Mine has gotten out once when I wasn't home and didn't really care that she was following a scent that would make her lost in the neighborhood. I think I got lucky on the howling part with her only doing it when you howl at her.
