Mine has gotten out once when I wasn't home and didn't really care that she was following a scent that would make her lost in the neighborhood. I think I got lucky on the howling part with her only doing it when you howl at her.

I don't plan on getting a fence, and I refuse to chain a dog -- just can't bring myself to chain up a dog unless he/she is on a leash with me walking around the neighborhood.

Then you don't want a beagle. I don't care how trained anyone thinks their beagle would be, it will follow whatever scent it would pick up.

They do shed though, so if I had to do it all over again - I'd probably get one that was mixed with a poodle -- which would give it the unfortunate name of Cockapoo... but it wouldn't shed. Eh, I dunno. As long as it ends up looking like this.

My wife wants to get some kind of yippy thing, the best I can compromise her to do is mix it with a Cocker Spaniel which ends up looking like this.

So cute

But if they don't shed, wouldn't you have to have them clipped? My parents have two poodles which I love to death, but they have to get clipped once every 6 weeks -- and that's like $60 each.

Those are some cute mixes!

I would highly suggest a Mini Schnauzer. They're great dogs around kids, very patient and mine barks only once in a great while. When you get her hyper she can be one fast little thing though.

Dachshunds are nice dogs and are very family friendly. They need a decent amount of exercise and lots of attention, but they are very loyal and funny as hell. You just need to be careful to avoid back injuries.

Every person I know that has a corgi has said they aren't very good around kids. Guess they don't like being around other ankle biters.

I personally believe that a dog can be trained to get certain behaviors out, but that's just me. I'd recommend a shiba inu or a corgi as those are the two types of mid-sizers that i really liked.

They're kind of hard to find, but a Border Terrier-Poodle mix might be what you're looking for. They're fairly small, intelligent, and not really hyperactive. They tend to look more natural than most poodle mixes do, not really being overwhelmingly like either breed. Here's one that I googled, only one I could find:

My friend's family has had a few of them now. They like to be around people, usually pick a favorite, and are pretty easy to train. Playful dogs, but not very vocal.

Our mutt of a dog is part beagle and we can attest to the howling and barking loudly nonstop part, although he doesn't do it all of the time, but when he does you have to chase him down in the fenced off backyard and forcefully drag him back in.

He also has a great obsession with chasing guys smaller than him...the hunter in him... like 4 baby rabbits one year. RIP

As you've already figured out, these guys are probably not suitable for your apartment living lifestyle Why not drop by your local animal shelter and check out some dogs that you may be compatible with. You'd be saving a life, and if nothing else, get a better feel for what you're looking for Go mutts!

I have a beagle, never again. They are really good natured and friendly to anyone, but you can't leave him alone. He's got separation anxiety so bad it's pretty much beyond repair.

Pembroke Welsh Corgis are the best dogs ever. They're so freakin' adorable, extremely smart (though slightly devious), and have amazing personalities. They do well in small environments and outdoors. They do need exercise, though, as they gain weight easily. My family's corgi is on low-fat food because of this, and he doesn't eat a lot. Thing is, they will do ANYTHING to get you to feed them. They're very deceptive, but it's hilarious.

They do like exercise, so it's not hard to get them to do it. They also like being total bums, so you get the best of both worlds.

Beagles are good dogs, but they're hunting dogs at the core...and the howling sucks.

Do some reading up on Corgis, honestly. They're under 30lbs and are relatively small. The only complaint my family has is that they shed a LOT and need brushings often (maybe once a week). I think it's totally worth it, though.

Also, our corgi is fine with kids, so long as the kids treat him properly. The only reason people say they're "bad with kids" is because the adults won't watch the kids or show them how to treat a dog properly, so the dog tends to dislike them for mistreating them. In my case, my parents were very lenient with how my little brother treated my dog, and so he kept on treating him "poorly" (not that he really knew). The dog still treats him fine, but will get angry with him more easily now than others.

Corgis like to think they are humans.

Beagles are very smart, instinctive, and sometimes obsessive dogs. Aside from barking, they are very clever in finding ways to escape, which they can seemingly spend 1/2 their lives planning how they are going to do it next (altho fixing them can help but not always.)

I am the Maltese brigade, but it is mostly because I prefer dogs that do not shed, especially when you live with someone that has allergies.

They are like poodles in the sense that they need to be clipped, but my parents never take him to the groomer - they just bought one of those pet grooming kits and do it themselves. If you put them on a high enough bench, they're too scared to jump and they stay pretty darn still.

I'd get a Shiba Inu if it didn't shed. I love that dog.

Awwww, man, for a dog, that's just pathetic and lame.

get a good oster clipper (i've got a turbo a5 or turbo iii or something) for about $120 and it'll pay for itself shortly.

i've got a bichon friese. he's personable, learns pretty quickly, doesn't run off, and only needs a couple miles jog. he almost never barks (unless he's surprised when asleep, then he howls). he's about 16 lbs and decently sturdy.

I like Shih Tzu, they're mild temper, quiet, and playful at the same time. Here's the profile.

i used to have two. they were both insane. they're also notoriously difficult dogs to house break.

If you are willing to go a bit bigger, consider a Labrador Retriever. I have a yellow female and is about the friendlyest dog i've ever had. good with cats, tho the cats aren't always good with her. She was abandoned by a former nieghbor and I took her in.

No beagles. Howl like crazy and their nose gets them into trouble. My PBGV is a hound dog, same as Beagle and it does get them into trouble. Will follow scents forever. Oh and please get a dog from a shelter. There is nothing better in the world to do since there are so many awesome dogs that need a good home.

Anyway, I'm adding it to my list which now consists of:

Welsh Terrier
Cockapoo (I'll have to see about the grooming aspects)
Corgi

Mini Dachshund!

My GF got one about 2 months ago and it's been pretty good so far. Hasn't really barked or yelped that much yet. Very hyper at times, but also likes to cuddle.

It's also completely hilarious when it runs. Wrinkly, stubby legs comin' at ya!
