There's cheap promo airfare from Atlanta to Budapest for the summer and I have bunch of Chase points so I booked it. I don't know anything about Budapest and never been to Europe. From quick Google search images, the city buildings and architecture look beautiful. I'll be there for 8 days with my wife and teenage daughter. Any must do recommendation?

Sightseeing. One of the prettiest cities in Europe.
Booze - they specialize in fruit spirits Pálinka. Delicious stuff. Be warned - it ain't easy next day. You can sit with kid in a bar, it is fine and just take it easy.

Bars are vastly different (read: better) than here.

One of the most beautiful women in the world. Street life/evening street bars/pub. Probably good to know somebody local.
Outdoor activities might be limited by Winter weather conditions. It is much better in Summer months.

Tons of museums. Tons. Spas! Some of those are from ancient times. Very popular.

You may not want to come back!

I went last year and loved it. Prague and Budapest are two of my favorite European cities. Thermal baths, ruin bars and super good food for a really decent price.

Went many years ago, was great. Took about 9 of us, so we were our own tour group. Wife is Hungarian, and speaks fluent. Most hotels can hook you up with guides if you desire to see the country. Best food in the world if you can get out of the city and try a little mom and pop. Langos is a great street food, fried dough, best with garlic and sour cream but they make it many different ways. Buda is rolling hills, Pest is a major city. Trains can get you around pretty fast and cheap. Horse show in the country are pretty amazing. Wine tasting is tricky, they'll take you to a celler (literally a hole in the mountain side) and let you taste, but they fill the glass and you'll be blasted by the end of the day. No alcohol at all if you plan on driving. The history is interesting.

We were there just before NYE last year - absolutely stunning city, from the Parliament to the Churches and Opera building. And it has one of my favorite Hilton properties (Hilton Budapest not Hilton Budapest City) with amazing views of the city. Its on the Pest side which is away from some of the sights but the bus and train were easy enough to figure out. Pretty good lounge as well if you have status with them. I would strongly recommend a tour of the Opera House. Its one of the more ornate venues - more so than Vienna which is saying something with how seriously they take Opera.

We really enjoyed our time there. Lots to see and do. Drinks are cheap especially if you get out of the more touristy areas. That was one thing we noticed though - it seemed like it had a higher price disparity touristy vs non-touristy areas than most European cities we've been to. A drink in a touristy area might be $6 but if you get over a street or two you'll pay $1.50 for it. Overall its definitely towards the top of our 'Favorite Cities' list

Another benefit is that the train has great connections to nearby cities like Bratislava and Vienna if you want to head out for a day or so in those areas. 2.5 hours to Vienna or 2 hours to Bratislava IIRC

I've been doing lot of google searching since yesterday. Because of the lost of a day due to air travel, I'll be there for 7 days in July. I'm thinking first 4 days in Budapest, then train to Vienna for 2 days there, and return to Budapest for the final 1 day before returning home. I was originally considering doing overnight trip to Pecs but Vienna might be more interesting and it's about the same travel distance but in opposite ways. I've been researching hotels and apartments because since I'm traveling with my teenage daughter, many of the hotels don't allow 3 adults in single room so my hotel choices are somewhat limited so I need to book early.

Exterous, I searched and found your NYE trip thread. I do remember you posting some beautiful pictures but forgot about it. But it looks like those pictures are no longer available from the hosting site. You went to Vienna and Budapest. Do you think it's worth visiting Vienna from Budapest for 2 days? I'm just concerned we might be bored and missing out if we stay in Budapest for 7 days.

Yeah stupid photobucket. Bastages. I can move them to Imgur and update that thread if you're interested in seeing any of the photos. If google images works thats fine too

Anyway I do think you can see a ton in Vienna in two days and is well worth the trip. Hofburg and Schonbrrun can both take some time to see everything if you're interested but we managed to fit those in and more in 2.5 days. I did like comparing the Opera houses. Even if you aren't a huge fan the attention to detail and the operation of them is impressive and they both take them very seriously (And constantly compare themselves to each other. "Ours is larger" "Ours does more high production shows per day"). You can buy tickets for a lot of things before hand for both Vienna and Budapest and it might be worthwhile to do so. Granted it was a completely different time of year but the lines for tickets were quite long when we were there.

The train ride is very easy. I use this site for all my planning and purchasing guides:

We decided to do first 4 nights in Budapest, then take the train to Vienna and spend 2 nights there, and then return to Budapest by train and spend the final 1 night there. So 5 nights in Budapest and 2 nights in Vienna. I found really cheap 1 bedroom apartment on AirBnB with A/C in great location on the Pest side of the city in middle of everything so I booked it for the full 7 days. It's going to serve as our home base. And since the rate was so cheap, I don't care if it sits empty for couple of days. I view it as paying for cheap luggage storage locker. I had originally booked the Hilton Budapest for 7 days but while it looks like great hotel, it's on the quiet Buda side away from most tourist areas and the rate is significantly higher. The AirBnB apartment is near the Four Seasons and Intercontinental Hotel on the Pest side and much closer to the action. I booked 2 nights at the Hotel Kaiserhof Wien in Vienna. It's #2 rated hotel in Vienna by TripAdvisor and was reasonably priced for 3 people. The AirBnB option in Vienna didn't seem as good as Budapest so I skipped it. Now I just have to book the round trip train ride from Budapest to Vienna but it seems I can't book it online until 60 days before the train departure.

I looked into visiting Prague instead of Vienna and thought about doing that. Direct flight from Budapest to Prague is only little over an hour long and round trip flight is only ~$130 per person. And there are lot of nice cheap AirBnB apartments in Prague. But I think the 2-3 hours train ride experience to Vienna would be more memorable. If I had extra 2-3 days or so, i would've loved to include Prague.

Went there like 10 years ago. Eat plenty of vegetables before you go because you won’t find them in restaurants there as the typical offerings are very meat centric.

Thanks! Looking forward to it. I have you to thank for the tip about the Fly4free site. I found about the cheap airfare sale because of that site.

That's fine because I can eat anything. I've been doing lot of research on restaurants and food scene in Budapest and food looks great.

I'm currently in Budapest, and I can verify everything you said here is true. I've never seen more beautiful city. And the women, wow. There are beautiful women everywhere here. I think my wife is jealous. I'm leaving for Vienna tomorrow and am sad to leave this place. Budapest is so much fun. But I will 100% return in the future. This is a gem of a city.

I'm back home from Budapest and Vienna. We had an amazing time. Budapest and Vienna are two of the most beautiful cities I've seen in my life. Two cities are similar yet so different. Of the two cities, I preferred Budapest but Vienna was great as well. Here are some pictures from my phone of Budapest and Vienna.

Budapest is full of youthful vibe and energy. You can see and feel the positive energy everywhere in the city. You see young people hustling and can see and feel the youthful optimism. This city is undergoing great transformation and will be totally different and matured city twenty years from now. So I suggest people go visit this marvelous gem of a city NOW while it's still young and innocent instead of waiting. Pretty much everything in the city is absolute bargain, even in the tourist sections. Just forget about shopping since Hungary has one of the highest VAT in Europe.

AirBnB options in Budapest are cheap and good. I paid about $60 a night for one bedroom AirBnB apartment right in the heart of the city and tourist district. It's crazy the value you get for your money in Budapest. And food and drinks are cheap. Giant gyro is little over $2 in the tourist district and will completely fill you up. Something like giant Schnitzel pork plate will run you about $7 and can be shared by two people. Beer and drinks are less than $2 in the tourist district. If you go outside the tourist area, you can get dinner house wine for less than $1 a glass with your meal. Lunches are absolute bargain. Almost every restaurant in the city offers great 2-3 course menu set lunches. Some starting as low as 1,200 HUF or little over $4. Generally for about $10, you can have great 2-3 course lunch meal at really great restaurant like Ket Szerecsen. It's awesome. But quite few places only took cash and not card so I had to always carry some Hungarian forints with me. But cash currency exchange places are common and few gave really great rates with no commission for buy or sell. I basically got the daily currency exchange rate listed on Google for my cash exchange which is better than any ATM or credit card rates.

I want to say I've never seen so many beautiful people everywhere as I've seen in Budapest. Many were visitors from other parts of Europe but many were residents as well. And they all dressed nice. I really enjoyed people watching. And the city, wow. Beautiful architecture, statues, and buildings everywhere. It's bit worn down and poorly maintained in places but that added to the charm. It's fairly large city and things were spread out a bit but I liked that. Public metro and transit were easy to use and generally great but you had to make sure you validated the metro tickets as the ticket inspectors really unfairly targeted tourists 100% of the time. Almost every time I rode the metro, I had random ticket inspectors target me and other tourists on the train checking for ticket validation. I bought the 72 hours travel pass so I wouldn't accidentally forget to validate the ticket. It's unfortunate and really gives negative impression of the city the way they target and harass tourists and try to make money from them through simple errors and lack of awareness. The random ticket inspectors in my experience only checked tourists and never residents of the city. I bought the 48 hours travel pass in Vienna but never once did I see ticket inspectors and I rode the trains and buses everywhere in Vienna. Based on my experience and others I've read, you can actually get by in Vienna and not buy metro tickets and ride for free because they practically never check. And Vienna metro, tram, and buses are far nicer and even better connected than Budapest.

We took the Railjet train from Budapest to Vienna. It was short less than 3 hours easy train ride. I was able to grab the discounted 13 and 19 Euro tickets by booking 2 months in advance. Vienna was bit of shock in price after being used to cheap Budapest prices. Prices on goods and services were generally about par with US prices. Vienna is like the cleaner and nicer version of Budapest as far as architecture. Buildings are maintained better and it's like they pressure washed everything and fixed the broken bricks and concrete. The city has mature and reserved feel to it. Vienna definitely feels like old money with lot of rich people. People were really friendly and helpful but in a way, I felt like I was in Germany with all the German influences.

We stayed at Hotel Kaiserhof Wien in Vienna and I highly recommend this hotel. I think I paid around $235 a night for three of us and that included fabulous and tasty buffet breakfast. I would easily value the quality of the breakfast as $30-50 per person if eaten outside the hotel. And we ate enough at breakfast where we could skip lunch while sightseeing and not be hungry until dinner time. Sometimes, I question TripAdvisor paid rankings and reviews. This time they got it right and it 100% deserved the #2 ranking of top hotels in Vienna.

We spent 2 nights in Vienna and I feel like we covered and saw majority of the big tourist sites. We had two nice Austrian style dinners. I think I prefer Austrian style food over Hungarian but both are great. Both cuisines are meat heavy and make good use of pickle spice and fermented veggies but Austrian seem to do it just slightly better. Or maybe I was just really hungry during dinner after skipping lunch sightseeing. I ate constantly while in Budapest since it was so cheap and it was easy to find food even late at midnight.

I'm 100% going back to Budapest. And I would even entertain the idea of buying property or apartment in Budapest.

It's an absolutely stunning city especially with how well they light it up at night. We looked out on the parliament building from our hotel room and I just sat in our window looking out over the city. I keep hoping for cheap airfare to Budapest or Vienna to come around again. Glad you had an amazing time and thanks for sharing the pictures! (Also I think the Szechenyi Bath is better in the winter when its freezing outside )

I looked at some google images and read some stuff before I went but pictures and words can't 100% show how beautiful the city is in person. There were so many moments where my jaws just dropped and I said "Wow" out loud because something beautiful I saw. And the city was really magical at night when it's dark and all the lights turned on. My wife signed us up for 3 hour night tour arranged by Korean hostel near the Opera house and they took us to Liberty Statue and view from there was simply gorgeous. You can see the entire Buda and Pest side lit up from there. They also took us to Fisherman's Bastion but I didn't think the view there was as nice as Liberty Statue. I thought the second best place to view the city at night was from the Buda Castle. We walked over the Chain Bridge on our final night after we returned from Vienna and rode the cable car up to the top of the Buda Castle.

Szechenyi Bath wasn't bad. I just didn't think it was worth $19 per person charge. It really was gorgeous place outside on the main swimming pools but inside baths were nothing special. I was expecting more luxurious spa and baths inside than just couple small Jacuzzi size pools and couple small sauna rooms. I guess my expectation was little too high for the baths but I was expecting something similar to hot springs in Korea but prettier. Even simple jjimjibang (traditional bathhouses found everywhere in Korea) are much better IMO and it only cost like $8-10 in Korea and it's open 24/7 so you can sleep in there as well saving you motel or hostel money.

I want to go to Europe again but it's going to be hard to find time because of my daughter's school schedule. I already booked Cartagena, Colombia, trip for the Thanksgiving break and Busan, South Korea, trip for next year Spring Break. That only leaves Winter Break as possible time unless I want to wait til next summer. I don't know if I want to go to Europe in the winter when it's bitter cold. I'm thinking Bangkok, Thailand, and Hanoi, Vietnam, as possible Winter Break trip destinations since it's warm there. But we had such great time in Budapest and Vienna that I want to visit other cities and countries in Europe too like Prague, Warsaw, and cities in Croatia and Serbia. As selfish as it might sound, I'm looking forward to when my daughter finishes high school and goes off to college so my wife and I can travel year round without worry and not be so date restricted when we can travel for leisure. It pains me I have to pass on so many great airfare deals because the travel dates don't perfectly align my daughter's school break schedules. This Budapest and Vienna trip was by far the cheapest summer vacation trip we've taken in recent memory. And most fun. It sure beat summer Cancun trips and hanging out at boring beach resorts.

Heading to Europe in the winter isn't something I'd recommend doing every year. In fact we've specifically avoided cold places the last two December-January trips because we got a little worn from the cold. Sill there is something special about all the various Christmas and holiday markets you can find in December. It's a completely different atmosphere seeing the sites with a fresh, snowy background. Also all the Glühwein helps take the edge off.

I completely understand about the school breaks. We are beholden to the school schedules as my wife is a teacher and its a giant pain in the ass to plan and pass on all those cheap September and October flight deals. Its even worse now because Michigan has finished moving all its school schedules in line to share a spring break. So all the outdoor places are jammed, the roads packed and the airfare is sky high. We're working on planning our summer 2019 trip but Spring Break remains unused because I'm not willing to pay 3x the airfare cost and award space is non-existent. I'm reasonably sure a deal will show up at some point but I like to plan these things out far in advance.
