Anyone build an Instant Messaging system before?

Hey everyone,

I'm wondering if anyone has created an IM system similar to AIM or MSN, but it is a closed system. So that only the users within the system can communicate it. (I don't want anything that connects to the large systems, ie AIM, MSN, Yahoo).

So if anyone has created something like this please post. I was about to do this web-based, but it really wouldn't be instant, it'd be more like "30-sec refresh" messaging hehe.

Out of curiosity, why do you want a closed system?

If you're looking for something closed so that you can do stuff illegal and no-one will know... try IRC, no one really cares about anything illegal you do there. File transfers and everything. mIRC is a good client for it.

Otherwise, thats a pretty good sized programming task to do Instant Messenging, but you could do ALMOST instant messenging with PHP pretty easily. Make a page that refreshes teh contents every 5 seconds or something, pulling data from a MySQL database, and everything you type gets submitted to a MySQL database. Might put a good load on the server but... it would work.
