I don't wear suits too often (just weddings atm). but since I've lost quite bit of weight i figured i'd update and buy one more my size (my old ones are baggy looking now). I bought a modern fit black Valentino (90% wool/10% silk) one on Amazon. It says made in Italy so I figure it must be OK? I'll maybe get more if it's ok

How much are you looking to spend? I don't think I'd want to buy something like that online, as I'd prefer to see how it looks on me (even if it is before any tailoring).

I don't wear suits that often (handful of weddings, holiday or two if I visit family, my upcoming defense, maybe job interviews) and I just went to a Men's Wearhouse. If you go during a certain times, they're "sales" basically mean you can walk away with two suits with some tailoring for under $500.

As others have noted, I wouldn't buy a suit online unless I've already owned the exact same brand, cut, etc in the past with no issues. A good suit should be tailored and fit and anything you buy sight unseen can be really hit or miss.

If you're looking for something cheap that you'll only wear once or very infrequently, you'd probably be fine buying online.

I spent $500-$600 on my suits back then in department stores. This one was $250 and my dry cleaners do alterations. So i thought name brand suit for this much was a good deal. Is the 2 suits for $500 @ men's warehouse quality name brand stuff?

I got two Calvin Klein suits from MW in March of '14 for $500, and that included the tailoring for the pants (none needed for the jacket), some socks, and a set of wooden hangers (I was originally a few bucks short of $500, which nets you a $50 gift card, later used to purchase two shirts). I've worn them a couple times now and haven't had any issues with the quality.

you can still get altered suits in italy for about five hunner bux.

they come off the rack, and are oversized in a specific way which needs to be fitted to each client. its not 1 size fits all, there would be a whole bunch - the tailor finds the right one, then sizes it to you.

it's what i wore for most of my life, daily. there is no comparison to a non-tailored suit, even if it's from valentino.
(ofc there's custom made, which is better, but those are 5 grand)

i suggest you find a tailor in italy, take a short holiday, and come back with a suit.
alterations take 1-2 days.

I was wondering about those shops. When I was living there I saw so many suit shops around Rome but how could you tell who was good and who was not?

Fabric quality, construction quality, fit. Nothing else means a thing, especially name brand.

Fabric - 100% wool, no exception. Polyester blends don't hold up and plastic doesn't breathe like natural fibers. Higher numbers (Super 180, 200, etc.) indicate finer but less durable fabric. Your climate will play a part in what weight and weave is ideal.

Construction - quality jackets are sewn rather than fused (glued in a press) and have a layer of canvas between the shell and the inner lining.

Fit - Single breasted or double? Rear vent or side vents? Lapel size, arm hole shape, etc. etc. The "modern" style favors a slim cut and flat front pants and looks great on guys with athletic or thin builds. If you're heavier a traditional fit is probably better. The most important part is the shoulders - everything else should be adjusted when you have it tailored.

you ask the people who shop there.

rome is still .. marginally .. a traditional city. a local family will tell you the ins n outs of every shop in town.

(ever been to the bread shop in campo de fiori?)

btw, i doubt you'd will find a bad tailor shop if you went looking for one. it's one of the main trades of italians, it's just .. tradition.

Nothing beats a bespoke suit. They can be had for around $500 these days.

It's probably better if you go suit shopping....try a bunch on and see how the fit is. Once you get your preferred brands, order online.

I ordered a few nice suits online and they never fit right. (even after tailor adjustments)

I have one really nice suit (bespoke from Hong Kong tailors nearby, ran about $1500). I also tried purchasing a pair from combatant gentleman for $200-ish each. While the combatant gentleman suits aren't bespoke quality, it's still pretty good, much better than similar priced suits from off-the-rack (Kenneth Cole, Alfani, etc). In fact I've received more compliments when I wore the combatant gentleman suits than the bespoke one.
