Anyone dealt with via onboard audio before?

Ive got a GA H77 D3H board and it wont put out audio over HDMI. Analogue audio works, digital i assume works ive no way to test the optical out but it will not put out anything over the HDMI cable.

This is what i see i device manager and i am 90% sure this is the core of the problem:

Theres the VIA audio which is installed and theres some other "high definition audio device" which dosent start. There was two of these before i installed any drivers, one turned out to be the VIA audio the other i still havent a clue.

Anyway heres what ive tried so far:

- Windows stock drivers
- Drivers directly from VIA site
- Drivers from gigabyte site
- Disabling that non working high def device
- Poking around the EFI for relevant options
- Poking around VIA's "HD VDeck" software for any options relating to HDMI
- Installing every other driver that came with the mobo, chipset, USB, all from the gigabyte site
- Different settings in the windows "playback devices" panel

None worked :'( Any ideas?

Never used onboard hdmi, or even hdmi audio before, so this is a stab in the dark.

But isn't it handled by your gpu? i.e. the thing hdmi is plugged into.. I would make sure you have all those drivers too.

Its the home server specs in my sig its using the onboard intel GPU in the i5 2400s so the HDMI plugs into the motherboard. Mobo has the most up to date chipset drivers.

I'm assuming you are using your AMD 5850's to try to bitstream or pass through (They mean the same thing) HD Audio (DTS-HD MA, and Dolby TrueHD) via HDMI. Or PCM or trying to downmix them to stereo?

From my understanding the AMD 5000 series cannot do it - that feature became available in the AMD 6000 series and newer AMD GPU... Nvidia 400 series, 500 series and newer Nvidia GPU can do it...

I don't think the IGP of the intel chipsets can do it either (correct me if I am wrong).

Anyhow, I just got a low profile AMD 5000 series for my work PC - I'll see if I can get it to work and let you know...

Try these VIA audio drivers, they have HDMI in the name.

I linked the Windows 7 64-bit ones, let me know if you need a different OS.

No joy im afraid, same problem.

It could be the actual chipset drivers at fault... i don't know what part of the mobo would control the sound over HDMI port. H77 was just released whereas this VIA vt2021 thing has been around for at least 1 year. I sent an email to gigabyte telling them about it, probably just end up with a stock "turn it on/off again" response but we shall see

I'm confused...do you have an AMD 5850 in this thing or just using onboard video?

If it's got the 5850 in it, then that has its own audio chip, Realtek, and you need to get the HDMI audio driver for that. You can get that off of Realtek's site.

If it's using the onboard video, then you need the Intel driver, should be on Intel's Download page.

You're saying you've done all that, and you're still getting the result you're getting?

That's another thing to check..in the BIOS, you've got HDMI Audio or whatever it is turned on?

On my Asrock z68 board, I have HDMI via chipset\onboard and the hdmi via the ATI 4830 on Windows 7.
Nothing plugged into the audio ports.

I just plug the cable in and it picks it up (think after reboot).

On my laptop I have to manually change the sound output device in control panel.
Have you checked that?

I'd tell you to go to Gigabyte's website and download the proper audio over HDMI driver but since your motherboard isn't officially released yet they may not be available yet.

For those confused about specs theyre in my sig under server.

Ive fixed the problem anyways.

HDMI even audio over HDMI is controlled by the VGA drivers, in this case the intel HD graphics drivers. The ones from windows update do not work, the direct download ones from intel cause a bluescreen :awe: but the drives from intels web based "auto update" thingy worked a charm. HDMI out works perfectly now and that device that wouldn't start now shows up as intel display audio.

Seems it was nothing to do with the VIA audio drivers

Why did you get this mobo, VIA... oh my :\

Both ASRock and Asus feature a high-quality ALC892 sound with regularly updated drivers.

Anyhow, glad it's been resolved since ;-p

Yeah i wasent thrilled to read "VIA audio codec" or "atheros ethernet controller" in the specs but i wanted a board with dual bios + UEFI + cheap and nothing else has that except this board.

Ultimately though its all working fine Apparently this vt2021 VIA chip is up there with the high end realteks:

Hell as long as it makes sound im satisfied ^_^

Spec-wise it should be on par with ALC889. I see.., how are you liking VIA drivers / sound quality, so far? I could use your feedback, I am due to upgrade several boxes next week and Gigabyte looks practical to me.

VIA audio chips are actually better than Realtek right now. I don't know about the Atheros eithernet though.

Drivers have been flawless, this particular VIA chip has all the same functionality of the realtek ALC887 in my previous mobo, jack detection on/off, auto mute when front panel is used etc. Its been hassle free although initially I thought it was the source of my HDMI troubles we know now that proved incorrect Software is a bit tacky looking IMO but it works:

Cant really comment on the sound quality too much as ive got it hooked up to this older model LCD TV using its onboard speakers:

http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/television/toshiba-37wl66/

Sounds the same as the realteks I had with the previous mobo. Not really surprising given they're both hooked up to the same thing using a digital connection. So overall it works well, does its job.

Great post Max, thanks. Very helpful

Imo, the big Pro of your particular board is the inclusion of additional controller, Etron and therefore, Windows XP users will be able to get USB 3.0 speeds. Intel, hasn't provided drivers for XP yet. (will default to 2.0 speeds).

Lots of expansion slots as well. Great board.

People actually still buy sound cards? I always use on board audio
Same. I haven't bought a card since Audigy 2 days but then again... I am not into music creation. A friend of mine who is... is reasonably happy with ALC889, albeit he says his EMU card is better.

Probably because you don't have nice audio equipment.

The Audigy 2s were GREAT sound cards.. After them, Creative switched from a hardware approach (high quality DAC, DSP, and opamps to produce high quality sound) to a software approach (artificial effects like x-fi, crystalizer, etc to simulate high quality sound)

.. but if you output DIGITAL to a receiver, a sound card is worthless.. higher quality sound cards (anything with a CMI8788 chipset) are for music loving audiophiles who want to output a pure analog signal to higher end speakers or headphones.

Thank You, Maximilian!

I had exact same problem with same motherboard and HDMI sound. I just needed to install Intel Display Audio part from Intel Graphics HD 4000 drivers.

***************************************************************************
* For Intel(R) Display Audio Driver:
***************************************************************************
1. Click Start, right-click "Computer", then "Properties", and then Device
Manager.

2. Click Continue when asked for permission to continue.

3. Double-click "Sound, video and game controllers".

4. Right-click the "High Definition Audio" controller if installing from
scratch or "Intel(R) Display Audio" controller if updating driver and
click "Update Driver Software".

5. Click Browse my computer for driver software.

6. Select the following option: "Let me pick from a list of device drivers
on my computer".

7. Click on the "Have Disk..." button and then the "Browse" button

8. Click Browse... and navigate to the folder where you placed the
extracted driver files.

9. Locate and highlight the "IntcDAud.inf" file and click the Open button.

10. Select "Intel HD Audio HDMI Audio Function Driver" and click "next".

11. The operating system will install the driver. Click the Finish button
when done.

12. Click the Yes button to reboot. The driver should now be loaded.

To determine if the driver has been loaded correctly, refer to the
Verifying Installation section below.

I have used onboard sound since ... um ... whenever.
I can't afford $800 speakers, so my Logitech 530's have to do.
I can hear it. That's the main thing.
