Anyone dislike there Union?

I have 2 jobs, both working on an ambulance, one full time and one part time, I don't mind being a union member on the full time job, But the part time job they take out like 30-50$ a month in u nion dues.. and they say you have to be a member...... Anyone know how to get out of being a m ember without quitting your job??

If you aren't in a "right to work" state, you might not have any other choice. Really depends upon the industry, and local laws.

At my workplace, the union has a clause where you can opt out of the union and give the money that normally goes to the union to charity.

The union stewards don't like that too much though.

i'm in oregonl... and they just tick me off... (union) they don't do squat and yet they expect you to pay them..... oh and then they expect you to give some guy 5$ a month for being the union representative... Like he does anything at all!

They tend to drag down the better employees and protect the lazy people that shouldn't have a job.

Where I work the mechanics get paid much more than the engineers.

They get approximately $0.58 per minute of work = $34.80 per hour = $72,384 per year.

A 10 year engineer makes around $55,000.

We actually have engineers changing to mechanics... what a waste of talent.

I'm a union member and pay about $60 every month for that right. I've seen the good that a union can do and have seen a lot of bad that a union can do.

If you don't like being an underpaid engineer, then become an (overpaid?) mechanic. In the past I was a mechanic on construction sites. I made twice as much as most of the engineers because I acutally produced 4 times as much as the pimply faced college graduates did. They thought that just because they had a degree they should be paid more than me. I used to fix their screwups using practical logic when their classroom training did nothing more than complicate everything and cost the company more money.

Unions are good. If you work for a union your almost garunteed not to get fired cause somone pissed you off. The place I work for is union and everyone gets along just fine!!!!!

Yeah, I edited out my diatribe dissing engineers before I posted. Never the less, their schooling has to count for something and I have met a capable engineer upon an occasion.

I don't see that as being bitter about not going to college. I took it to be that he was bitter/pissed because people that have degrees sometimes act like they're better than people that don't. And sometimes the person without can do just as good a job or better than the person with the degree.

Of course I could be wrong in my assumption of his post.

If your Union is so bad you can dismiss it. All you have to do is get the majority to vote it down. PERIOD.

But as a Business student, I have studied how unions are at an all time low. This has happened as most companies know that if you take care of your employees, they will not form a union AND do better at their job.
Its just common sense now for a company to do right, as it is cheaper in the long run.

I hate my union. I'm just a student worker on the grounds crew at a golf club. The union itself is alright, but some of the guys who work there totally abuse the union. They pull rank on us less senior guys for all the good jobs, so we do all the sh!t work all summer. I really don't mind though, but I would at least like to have a few days out of the summer on the machines to learn a bit more about what goes on there. I feel really sorry for the management there because whenever they do train us on some equipment, some of the other guys threaten to bring in the union if we are ever using that equipment out on the course, despite the fact that we're supposed to be their union brothers.

Hehe, some of us students were gonna form a "student union" just out of spite and for fun, but it's just a running joke now. Can't complain about the student rate there though, $13.60/hr.

You hit the nail on the head. I am a memeber of the IAM and we have some of the laziest turds you have ever seen and when thay get in trouble for sitting on their ass it's the union that helps them keep their job.

I used to be in a union and it was a bad experience. The union spent all their time fighting to keep thieves and cheats employed even when caught red-handed. After a year I realized I could outproduce many of my more experienced co-workers (without killing myself) only because they were incredibly lazy, and my yearly raises were set in advance for three years. There was no incentive to do any more than the bare minimum.

We went on strike for 6 months for no obvious reason except the union leaders wanted to "teach the company a lesson." We ended up signing the same contract that was offered to us before the strike, so people lost a half-years wages for nothing. I was young and single so it didn't hurt me, but people with families were struggling terribly. I was lucky to get a promotion to a non-union job after a couple years.

That said, not all unions are bad.

Actually, that isn't as easy as it sounds. In my union, there is a portion of the by-laws that allows for the revoking of union membership for any member that speaks against the union.

No union membership=no job
