I want to cool my comp with Freon... preferably R134. Has anyone tried this before? The main problem is finding an effective but cheap compressor.

Building your own refrigeration system is futile. You need to have a considerable background knowledge in calculating the filling amount, matching proper evaporator+condenser and oil. You also need to have an oxyacetylene torch to hook things together, a vacuum pump to evacuate the system and some mean of filling the refrigerant precisely.

Have a look at my cooler here

In addition to Jerboy's comments, have you considered insulation? It's not a trivial problem. Anytime you have something well below ambient temperature there is water condensation (unless you have humidity controlled to 0%); you don't want that in your computer!

My guess is you'd be best off buying a commercial supercooling setup; I saw a post here about one for ~$400.

I'm sure I can handle it... but it'll probably take longer to build than I expected.

That's something I have to consider.

Another big consideration is you have to have a CFC card to purchase refrigerents by law, I am a HVAC Serv. tech and the EPA has handed out some heafty fines. Best to buy preassemble, I have done refrigeration work for over 15yrs. and I can honestally say that I would buy instead of build unless building it was part of the fun, of corse it would just be a job to me , YUCK.
