Great thread! Have been more of a scotch/blended whiskey person up until recently - Makers and Woodford Reserve have been my goto lately!

Since I killed the thread, thought I'd update it - bought some Bulleit - smooth stuff.

Did get to try Angel's Envy at a tasting today as well - very good, but couldn't quite take the plunge for $40 for a 750ml just yet. Haven't quite developed the taste to go up that high...yet.

I wonder how much that famous barrel of Mila Kunis Jim Beam will go for once it's aged properly?

I haven't in awhile but might get some this weekend.

I miss Wild Turkey or Makers Mark myself.

Two of my personal favorites.

And if I do I like it neat.

If you're mixing things with Coke BTW, I recommend trying Seagrams VO.

Try it sometime if ya haven't, VO is great with Coke.

We used to even take the ribbons off it and put in our cammie hats for a short timers ribbon, as it was a regular drink mix in the USMC where I was at the time.

Is it any relation to the biscuit? Or is that just coincidental? Dont think ive tried a bourbon whiskey.

Since this got bumped, I'll throw in my latest recommendation for a budget rye(yea, yea. It's not bourbon). Pikesville. I can get it for $12.50 around here, and it tastes far better than its price tag. Dunno how it compares to other ryes, but it has a great flavor, and strikes me as being an American take on Irish whiskey.

So...I live in the heart of the Bourbon trail now and It's more expensive for a bottle of Woodford Reserve 15 miles from where it's made than it was 400 miles away in IL. LAME.

Looks good for a Coke mixer to me.

I just threw the VO out there as a higher end Coke mixer, but I don't even bother these days.

If going there I'd just buy something neat.

There's nothing I really like besides Jack and Pepsi. I like the charcoal mellow flavor. Jim Beam is owned by a Jap company now BTW. I won't buy it.

moar resurrection.

i've been a scotch drinker for a while and scoff at domestic whiskey.
Last week I got a chance to sip on Blanton's and immediately was floored by its rich flavor. I am a convert now.

It's not bourbon by law. Filtering it through charcoal precludes it from being bourbon.

no. there's nothing in the law that says if it's filtered through charcoal it is not bourbon. there's a tennessee state law that requires the lincoln county process to be used for anything produced in tennessee to be labeled "tennessee whiskey." but that doesn't change federal law, under which tennessee whiskey is, indeed, bourbon.

So does the fact that it's made in Tennessee. Still bourbon though.

also no. bourbon can be made anywhere in the united states.

here are the legal definitions:

http://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/27/5.22

you'll note the word 'tenneesee' isn't used at all, and there is no prohibition against charcoal filtering in the definition of bourbon.

It appears you're correct. I thought the distillation process was more rigidly dictated.

Wikipedia said:
The Federal Standards of Identity for Distilled Spirits (27 C.F.R. 5) state that bourbon made for U.S. consumption[16] must be:

Produced in the United States[17]
Made from a grain mixture that is at least 51% corn[17]
Aged in new, charred oak barrels[17]
Distilled to no more than 160 (U.S.) proof (80% alcohol by volume)[17]
Entered into the barrel for aging at no more than 125 proof (62.5% alcohol by volume)[17]
Bottled (like other whiskeys) at 80 proof or more (40% alcohol by volume)[18]

Woodford Reserve and Makers Mark are both good. My go to is Woodford Reserve. I generally drink it neat or with one or two ice cubes on occasion. I didn't care for Eagle Rare the one time that I had it. I may give it another shot though.

If you really want to treat yourself, try some Blanton's. It's the nectar of the god's when it comes to bourbon! It'll run you about $60 a bottle though. So smooth!

And to those that said Jack Daniels, GTFO! Jack =! bourbon. NEWBS!

Got some Angels Envy awhile back. Not bad.

Picked up some Knob Creek smoked maple. Dessert sweetness, with nice maple flavor. Going to stock up while this is on sale.

Eagle Rare 10 year is a good cheap Bourbon.

Honestly I prefer it's younger (and fortunately for me also cheaper) cousin, Buffalo Trace. It's much more lively! But I would say Eagle Rare is significantly smoother, if that's your thing.

Straight Buffalo is where it's at

blantons is good, reminds me just a tiny bit of scotch. i think id prefer woodford, the double barrel is great. i saw someone make a bourbon and coke with woodford once....what a horrible thing to do. definitely a very, very good sipping bourbon.

otherwise i keep a handle of wild turkey around for mixing, and like buffalo trace and evan williams for cocktails. i prefer an old fashioned or a mint julep, because i am lazy, and they are tasty.

i do have some bookers, which is good, but high proof. it needs a little splash of water, imo, to cut the burn buts its still quite good if you power through it.

ive also got some basil hayden, its good but i dont love it. bulleit, larceny and makers are good and in the $25 - 40$ range, but not ones i prefer to buy for myself. i wouldnt turn any of them down, however.

i also like scotch quite a bit. are we doing scotch in this? i got some oban for christmas...

Bourbon whiskey needs to have fresh wooden barrels. Barrels never used for anything else. Thats what gives it a unique flavor compared to any other whiskey which was allowed to sit in an already used barrel and gets a different set of flavors.

A mint julep is hardly a lazy cocktail; you need to pluck some fresh mint, gently muddle it with sugar, crush a shitload of ice; it even has its own specific glassware. That's a fussy (though delicious) drink.

If you like good bourbon cocktails, this is my new favorite: The Revolver.

2 ounces Buffalo Trace
1/2 ounce coffee liqueur (Kahlua works, although I've heard the original was made with Tia Maria)
2 dashes orange bitters

Stir with ice, strain into a chilled cocktail glass, garnish with a flamed orange twist. It's easier than a mint julep and it's awesome; you'd think it would be too sweet, but that's why the coffee liqueur is used in such a slight amount.
