i find it funny that people complain about spending $60 on games. i'm sure that people are making much more money now than they were when they were kids, yet $50/$60 for games back when everyone had much less money it was not an issue.

I never paid $50/$60 for games when I was a kid. Back in those days, new games were $29.99 with the occasional hot title going for $34.99. (Yes, I'm not accounting for inflation, I know).

At any rate, $60 is quite a bit of money to spend for a glorified roster update (I'm looking at you, Madden) or yet another reskinning of CoD. I don't know about you, but when I was younger, crap like that was called "expansion packs" and they were often 1/2 to 1/3 the price of the actual game.

As it currently stands for me, I have Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360. I obviously can't say what I'll do for sure until I see the official, confirmed stats, pricing, etc. of all the next gen hardware, but if someone pinned me to an answer today, I'd likely say that there is zero chance of me ever buying a Wii U, it is very unlikely that I'd buy the next MS console, and probably 50/50 on the next Playstation.

The reason I lean more towards the PS4 (again, this is at first take; I can't say for sure until I see pricing and final specs) is for the following reasons:

1. MS pissed me off with the Xbox hardware issues. The only way they could likely convince me to buy one of their new consoles is to offer an absurdly generous trade-in program and I doubt that will happen. I'm sure the usual MS defenders/cheerleaders will quote my post and make all sorts of excuses, and I wish them luck because Microsoft's handling of the situation is inexcusable.
2. You guys can sit here and praise XBL Gold all you want, but I don't get anything out of it and dropped my subscription years ago. $50/year (or $35/year) isn't worth it if you don't use the features. I don't play enough online console multiplayer to make it worth it and philosophically, I don't think I should have to pay a sub for the "privilege" of playing online. Outside of online play, XBL Gold offers NOTHING else that a $50 Roku can't do better that I'm aware of.
3. I frankly believe the PS3 is a superior console to the Xbox and the only reason I have more Xbox games is because neither of my brothers has a PS3. Otherwise, I would've tossed my 360 years ago. IMO, the PS3 has better exclusives.

I'll probably end up getting a PS4 since Sony has far better exclusives than Microsoft this generation and I don't see that changing in the next.

Maybe a Wii-U when it's gotten really cheap and has several high quality Nintendo titles (Zelda is a must before I bite).

Yet you post about Redboxing games all the time, costing you probably like $6 max unless you keep it super long.

If you're so wealthy you'd have no problem paying $60 for them either.

I'm not paying $60 for most games, period. They're too short and I don't play multiplayer. Tomb Raider is probably my GOTY yet it still wasn't worth the $50 I spent on it. I beat it in about 10 hours and have no interest in going back to it.

I remember my mom spending $60-70 on super nintendo games. Anybody else remember those days?

Nowadays I usually wait till games go on sale for $30-$40 or I wait for GOTY editions in the case of games I know will have a lot of expensive DLC (Bethesda, Rockstar games)

This is why it was clearly a rental. I paid $12 to play it.

I ordered Bioshock and I fully expect that upon completion I will resell while price is still $60, again costing no more than $20 to play at the most I think few games are worth $60 if that really is the entire cost.

No, games were highly available to be rented back then. I spent $70 on 1 game only. Final Fantasy 3. Everything else I bought was far cheaper. The only reason I bought that game was because I knew it would cost me that in rental fees  I admit it I've always been cheap when it comes to games, even back then I could usually finish most games within 1-2 nights.

How do you even know that? The online platforms will be completely different next gen. PS4 is boasting a bunch of new features like streaming, video/screenshot capture/upload, instantaneous demos, and passing the controller to another player online.
Which is why I said I will have to wait and see what PSN is offering. Xbox live is far superior in terms of experience right now. PSN has got to play catch up. It looks like Sony got the message and is doing something about it. We will see. And don't kid yourself that the big multiplatform 3rd party games will still be cross platform.

This is so fanboy that it hurts.

You can't tell me PSN is a great service for online play. Sure, that was a bit of a hyperbole but it wasn't a great service. XboxLive dominated it and raised the bar so high for what consoles need to offer.

totally the opposite here... Tecmo Super Bowl, TLOZ: A Link to the Past, Super Mario Kart, Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat II, NBA Jam, I had a bunch of SNES games.

I had alot of games, I just didn't pay $60 for them..even new. I had a lot of RPG's that I sold years later for more than I paid for them.

i don't have a problem playing $60 for a game, and do plenty. but if it is a game that i will beat in 4 sittings, why the hell wouuld i pay $60 for it when i can pay $8 to do that? that would just be stupid.

then you weren't getting new games at release for snes or n64, because they were routinely $60 and $70 for some of the titles.

I won't be buying both systems for next gen like I did this gen--pretty disappointing 7 years for a small handful of exclusives weren't worth it, especially since I had to buy 3 PS3s and 3 Xbox360s due to poor quality control and thermal design. So the total cost of getting 2 consoles ended up being over $2k of hardware over this generation, no different than the cost of PC upgrading over a similar time period.

Idk wtf you were doing buying a new console because of "poor quality control and thermal design" when the big problems for each console were covered under warranty, if if you were out of warranty cost like $99 to have them refurbish your console.

I stopped with consoles after the Atari 2600 and didn't own a console again until the Xbox 360. In the interim, I was exclusively a PC gamer and the most expensive game I ever bought to this day was Tie Fighter in 1994 (I paid $64 for that to get it early). The only reason I even bought the 360 was for sports gaming.

I'll wait and see what people are doing with the new hardware before I make the plunge. I had a 360 and a Wii but sold them cause I never used them. Given the option of playing on my PC or TV I'd take the PC. Though their are some games that are much better on consoles. Action games and sports games come to mind.

I don't have a problem paying $60 for a game provided it works as it should straight away. That generally doesn't happen on PC all that often. Usually takes a patch or two to get the game where it should have been from the start. Course by then you can get the game for much less..

I'm worn out by the current gen. Nothing new and fresh is really out. I feel like I'm ready for a huge leap forward in games. I REALLY hope the FPS's (I like them) can really use the new power to add a lot to their games. I'm really praying sports games get a lot better too. And then obviously, all the new ideas that should hopefully come with nextgen capabilities.

I did pay for console repairs--twice. They went bad again within weeks. Repairing a flawed design over and over again is just a waste of time, and I don't like sitting for weeks or months waiting for my console to get repaired. So I sell the broken piece of crap and buy the console when a new design comes out.

People like you might have all the time in the world and don't mind their devices sitting in the repair center half the time--I don't have time for that--I actually like to play games instead of just claiming I own the console and never actually can play it coz its being repaired.

I definitely agree. I had 3 or 4 Xboxes croak due to the RROD and another unit's DVD drive croaked after warranty. That's a lot of down time and it always seemed to occur at the worst time. I've got 2 of the older units that have been solid now for a couple of years but I think that is more due to the fact that I don't really play them that much. I got a PS3 in late 2010 and am much more impressed with it.

It will depend on price for me. If I feel like buying the system at release date which I most likely won't then I can wait for some good finance offers too. I doubt there will be many good games out when it first comes in. I have not used my ps3 much except for netflix. I'll most likely get it to play online with friends that can't afford to build a decent gaming pc.

As much as I don't agree with extended warranties in general my first ever xbox died in one year from purchase and my ps2 two years in. I didn't get on the 360 bandwagon until the Jasper units were out, but the early ones were crap, too. It seems a wise idea to get an extended warranty on consoles unfortunately, at least first releases.

I only got a 360 like 8 months ago, I doubt I'll be going "next gen" any time soon. My main gripe with the current gen is that the vast majority of stuff is FPS or FPS-derived. I HATE first-person shooters.

Oh noticed that did you?

Yeah, fortunately for me, I bought the Best Buy extended warranty on my 360 and it paid huge dividends. Due to a price drop, I was also able to upgrade from my Pro to Elite for $50 when my Pro died.

Best Buy wasn't making any money on those warranties because at one point, they changed the terms and it became "bring the unit in and we'll get it fixed for you." So in other words, they were just doing what you could do yourself via Microsoft within the 3 year RROD period.

I think I'm finished with console gaming. I sold my Wii years ago, gave my 360 away, and I only use my PS3s for Netflix/Blurays/Vudu. I think I played a total of 3 games on my 360 and 8 on my PS3s. I've turned into a 100% PC gamer. I can't play first person games with a controller and I spend most of my time playing Steam multiplayer games anyway.

I wouldn't say XBL dominated it. They are different products sold at different price points, free vs $35-50/year. Personally, I don't see any added benefit for paying money for nearly the same features. Party chat isn't worth that much to me. I'll just use skype or something.
