Besides the drop in screen size, any other reasons for wanting to replace it?

My desk is about 3.5 feet deep, so I liked keeping it on the far side and having lots of desk space. It takes a lot more gpu power to run, and I don't think my eyes are good enough to notice the increased sharpness of the Shimian anyway.

Ehhh, my Westy is about EOL as well, I've got the right side of the monitor dying on me (dark wave keeps expanding, noticeable enough to be annoying). Give it a whirl and see how it goes

My Westinghouse started to get some dark lines going across from the top left as well. I guess it was backlight related.

I'm looking at one of these, but I'm not sure that it can compete with the old Westinghouse monitor.

I just bought a Square Trade warranty for my Shimian. It looks like the price has gone up to $383 for a pixel perfect. It might be a better deal to get one of the MicroCenter monitors now although I read somewhere that if it dies in a year it has to be shipped and can't be exchanged at the store and the MC warranty is $80 for 2 (additional?) years.

I have no experience with a 2560x1440 monitor at all. In gaming do most UIs scale to this resolution? I'd hate to have tiny menus, UI and dialog boxes and have to stick my nose up to the screen to make them out.

So my older monitor which I'd been using as a second monitor seems to have died today. Getting one of these is now a whole lot more tempting.

pretty sure diablo 3 does, as anand review the new macbook playing it at a crazy high res. Most games have options to make ui items bigger.

But keep in mind - this is a 27 inch monitor. So im guessing the DPI would be similar to a 1080p 21" monitor. and 1440p isnt THAT much more than 1080p in terms of having small menus and such.

never got a response to this:
So ive just about reached the point where i might just order one now, and just hope they come out with the pcb to OC it to 120hz later. few questions:

which is the best model to buy/site to buy from? I havent really put much thought in to it until now, since i was just banking on getting a 120hz version from 120hz.net. I defintley need one that has the (vesa) holes on the back.

what are the chances they actually will ever come out with this pcb Im coming from a 120hz monitor?

Any other tips for someone planning on getting this? Ive also heard the 120hz versions drop a lot of frames - so is it even worth it to OC?

Basically, im kinda giving up hope that ill get a 120hz version, so i just want to buy one now, and hope they come out with the pcb later to OC it to 120hz.

Where should i buy, and what model? The only thing i need are 100mm vesa mounts (if thats not standard on all of them)

EDIT: Do i need a catleap if i want a chance to OC? Or can i can an acheiva or another brand? Do they all have that weird power connector? And do they all have inputs on the side?

For the Catleaps, You need the ones with the 2B boards to OC...the ones with 2B PCB boards were made and sold in Feb/March... all other ones will max OC a little pass 60Hz...

well they keep talking about getting another shipment of maybe 100 or so monitors in maybe a few weeks. Im guessing those are gonna be tough to get, so i was really just banking on this: http://120hz.net/showthread.php?256

They may release just the 2b pcb board so you can put that in a normal catleap to make it 120hz. I was wondering if it would also work on a acheiva or something like it.

And where is the best place to buy? and which model?

Im leaning towards buying a pixel perfect catleap from greensum. Not sure what the difference is between SE and the more expensive one:

http://stores.ebay.com/green-sum/_i.html?_nkw=perfect+catleap+27&submit=Search&_sid=985586498
could it just be the number or inputs?

is this the cheapest price/best model to buy?

Damn these look kind of nice. I'm wondering if my VG278 was worth the cost. On the other hand, I love FPS to be as high as I can get it and response times to be as fast as possible, so perhaps i'm not yet ready to take the "leap" as shown in the above post.

There are some sellers selling it for cheaper to the $300 range... (not going to post ebay link... someone got warned earlier for posting an ebay link in the forums).

Don't waste your money on pixel perfect because if it is an A- grade panel, there may be other defects or reasons why it is an A- grade panel. It may also means no dead pixels in the predefined area stated in the manual or just no visible dark pixels. I've read some people ordered pixel perfects and still got dead/bright pixels.

The SE model just has a Dual Link DVI connection port while the more expensive model has more connections including an HDMI 1.3. The one with multi-inputs will have input lag due to an internal scaler which some hardcore gamers say will affect games like first person shooters - THAT I disagree because I am a Hardcore gamer and I borrowed my friends 2560x1440 multi input monitor for gaming while he's on vacation (if you look at my last 10 BF3 battelog reports I am #1 in kills with a 3/1 kill death ratio or higher K/D ratio in most of my games)... may be because I play with v-sync off...

If you are going to get a multi-input one you might as well purchase the EQD version from Microcenter which uses the same A- grade panel and costs $400 (this is the one I borrowed from my friend).

The overall majority are happy with their Catleaps... the 120Hz.net group should have an answer soon so if you're not in a rush just wait.

thanks for the info. When you say they should have an answer, is the question will pcb boards be produced, or will a lot of 120hz versions be released?

Im not in a rush, because i do what to play BF3 with my new gtx670 on my current 1080p 120hz monitor for a bit so ill have something to compare it to.

These screens DO have some defects, hence the lower rating. If you order perfect pixel, you are almost guaranteed to get an uneven backlight. Its a trade off. I ordered the standard 290 shipped Catleap last Sunday and it came on Wednesday. I didn't pay for perfect pixel and I didn't have any dead pixels. I have a slight uneven backlight in the lower right hand corner that is only noticeable when its all black. Otherwise, the screen looks fantastic! Well worth the money. Don't waste money on perfect pixel IMO.

I think both... the Catleap 120Hz versions and the PCB boards for existing Catleap owners... About a month ago the Catleap factory produced and released 100 or so units of the 120Hz versions for the 120Hz group and it sold out nasty quick. They were suppose to have 100 units per week available since then but there were some issues with manufacturing. Becareful of the ones on Ebay claiming that they are 120Hz, some of them may not be true 120Hz... I've read some buyers said they don't overclock to 120Hz (not sure if it was real or that their GPU doesn't support it) or that the boards were skipping frames to give an impression of 120Hz - reason why is they may not be using the 2B boards.

I made the jump to a 27" 1920x1200p and I never looked back, now I've gamed on 27" 2560x1440p and I dont' want to go back to 1920x1200p - I have a GTX 670 too and it runs BF3 butterly smooth at that resolution on Ultra = perfect card at that resolution for the game (similar to my old GTX 570 on a 1920x1200 monitor).

Don't get me wrong about the Catleaps - for gaming they are pretty awesome and there is a high percentage you may even get a perfect panel - it may have something to do with the way how Apple/Dell bins the panels (trying to find a concrete confirmation on this from my reasearch)... it could be something as something like minor backlight bleeding, slightly off contrast ratio (too black?), less or too high brightness, etc.

Even with minor defects, A- grade should not be an issue when you only use it for gaming... only reason why I didn't get it is because I do some video/picture editing and I need one with a Display Port...

You should ask one of the 120Hz group members if there are any spots left for the group buy to jump on one of the runs of the 120Hz monitors once they have a clear answer.

Got my beauty in, took 3 business days total for shipping, so color me impressed. Came with everything I needed in the box; power brick (Korean plug, but green threw in an adapter; I'm using my Westy's plug though) and DL DVI cord. No scratches, no problems with shipping.

Zero dead pixels, very nice color uniformity and VERY little backlight bleed (bottom right, doesn't extend far.

Very happy, need to test it more but it's wifey's birthday. Looking forward to some Skyrim and BF3 on this

ALSO: Holy shit screen space, definitely an upgrade over my 1080P 37" Westy.

Anybody use a regular power plug with one of these, instead of the included Korean plug (round prongs) with a US plug adapter? I'd prefer to have a 3 prong plug like your typical cord.

Yeah, a standard 3 prong like what comes with a psu will work fine. The power supply may not be rated for 120v though. If so it might not hurt to pick up a step up transformer.

Where can I find this, and how much does it cost? I'm probably gonna order mine soon.

Packages showed up today. Individually wrapped and labelled. They were absolutely filthy, so I'm glad they were wrapped as I plan to keep the boxes.

Box pictures...

More on the way...

Box opened:

Well that's going to be a problem:

You would think these two screws (one on each side) are what's holding the stand but no it's much worse. There are six of those total, four of which require disassembly to get to.

Lots of screws just to get the front panel loose.

Then 8 more to get the back cover loose from the panel (not shown).

Panel label shot (LG):

Be careful pulling the back cover off, that bundle of wires is taped down. It made a horrible ripping noise but I appear to have only slightly ripped the foil tape. Connections all look OK, fingers crossed 'cause I haven't actually turned this thing on yet.

Final screw count is 29, I think:

That's all so far, need to actually fire these up and see how they work before I pull the other two apart.

Sorry about the cell phone pics, SLR is on a moving truck somewhere between OR and NJ.

viper, why are you unscrewing the back covers off? Nice shot of the LG info for the panel, looks legit.

Is that a step up transformer? What's the difference between that and the ones I already have all over the place?

Ahh you were asking about the transformer, not the cable. Yes the cables you have all over the place are just fine. I did think it a bit odd that you were asking that, but ignored the transformer part.

They ship with universal voltage power supplies and adapters (albeit ungrounded) to get into US outlets.

I would just use the cables you have around.
