I seem to get really tired after eating a lot, while before eating I felt fine and awake as usual. Sometimes I'll eat lunch and take a nap directly afterward. I don't know why, but I don't really like it. Sleeping in the middle of the day isn't very productive. But, many times after eating lunch, I feel the need to take a 3-4 hour nap, even if I've got a lot of sleep the previous night. I'm wondering what's wrong with me and how I can fix it, other than skipping lunch.

Try eating less for lunch. I think it is fairly normal to feel tired after a large meal, especially in the middle of the day.

Yeah, I think it's because after a large meal, your blood sugar gets real high, and then your body dumps a whole bunch of insulin into the bloodstream to counteract, which causes your blood sugar to crash sharply, making you tired. I always get real sleepy after lunch at work and have to drink some gatorade or something to keep myself awake.

I have started eating smaller, lighter lunches and no longer feel the urge to sleep all afternoon.

...but isn't it feel great to be able to catch a few hours in the lounge on a slow day. No one around to notice, & you sleep till five. Recliners are expensive & they should be put to good use.

This has been happening to everybody forever. When you eat a lot your body responds by producing insulin, after which you have a crash. It happens to everybody.

Besides the insulin change that other mentioned, its also because your blood supply is spending more time on your digestive system.

Everybody has this problem to some degree then i suppose?

I get really tired following the couple hours after I eat, I think I definitely get much more tired than the average person after eating.

I don't see why anyone would say everyone has this problem. I've surely never been tired after lunch, infact, lunch is around the time I'm most awake.

Maybe you need to eat a bigger breakfast, maybe you eat too many carbs, maybe you eat too much turkey, maybe you just eat too much, maybe you wait too long between breakfast and lunch. I don't know.

I have been known to skip breakfast and eat big lunches. Does this really mean I should require a nap after every lunch though?

If you stuff your belly, you'll get tired. It can even happen from drinking water. No use fighting it, cause you'll lose. Don't skip breakfast.

I always used to get tired after meals. Then I found out I was gluten intolerant. Cut out the gluten, no more sleepy time

Grabbing something as simple as a banana or a granola bar will help, get something in yourself so you don't fall asleep.

It's called "food coma." Welcome to life.

It is also what sparked the saying "a full stomach is a lazy mind and body." Your body is probably wired to rest after eating so it can be ready to chase more food later.

Come to think of it, it's the same for sex.

Eat normal-sized meals. You're probably way over-eating, just like the majority of America.

The real solution is to split your lunch into three smaller meals. Eat them at 2-3 hour intervals. Say at 10, 12 and 2.

Not only will your energy levels stay higher, your metabolism will rise.

Its mostly due to greasy/fatty food. If you looked at your blood before and after such a meal, the difference is MASSIVE. Clear serum is now nearly opaque. You think you just *feel* greasy inside, but you are LITERALLY greasy inside. The body has to work hard to process all of that fat, and the rest of your body takes second candle at the point. Its kind of a get it over with thing...if you didnt nearly pass out, it would take much longer to process, and you'd feel off for a much long period of time.
