Happens to most people, but people with diabetes/hypoglycemia are more sensitive to it. My family has a history of diabetes and I feel tired after lunch no matter what I eat. However, it's not as bad if I eat less and stay away from white bread/sugar.

You think you just *feel* greasy inside, but you are LITERALLY greasy inside. The body has to work hard to process all of that fat, and the rest of your body takes second candle at the point. Its kind of a get it over with thing...if you didnt nearly pass out, it would take much longer to process, and you'd feel off for a much long period of time.

Don't carbohydrates require the most energy from your body to break down? And he mentioned skipping breakfast. Which means he is running on empty all the way until 2 hours after lunch. I don't believe him feeling tired after eating should be considered normal. I'm not a nutritionist (although sometimes I wish I were) but I bet his daily practices are doing most of the damage to him.

Depends on the carbohydrates, but they generally take the *least* amount of time for your body to break down...because unless it's really complex, they dont really need to break it down at all, therefore we experience the sugar rush. Carbs don't need to be broken down so much as properly stored (as fat/glycogen).

Fat on the other hand doesnt get used directly like carbs, so theres a lot of energy requiring "processing" required to use them or get them into storage sites. Same idea with protein, but a bit different. And your body is really trying to maintain a certain level of things in the blood, because otherwise you will pretty much die. Having blood turn to sludge because of fat is definitely something that needs to be corrected asap, even if it means forgoing consciousness.

Which is why a bagel isnt going to give you the itis, but a fatty meat dinner will.

It is also what sparked the saying "a full stomach is a lazy mind and body." Your body is probably wired to rest after eating so it can be ready to chase more food later.

Come to think of it, it's the same for sex.

I love the more primitive aspects of humanity. It's hard not to appreciate the simple pleasures in life, like having sex, eating a nice big meal, and falling asleep.

Yeah, I think it's because after a large meal, your blood sugar gets real high, and then your body dumps a whole bunch of insulin into the bloodstream to counteract, which causes your blood sugar to crash sharply, making you tired. I always get real sleepy after lunch at work and have to drink some gatorade or something to keep myself awake.

the blood sugar thing is something that takes about 3 hours to take effect. and you don't just get sleepy, you also get grumpy, weak, shaky, and you may even have your senses and ability to think affected. that's for people that blood sugar is a problem for. the rest of you just feel "hungry" again.

i think the OP is referring to the groggy feeling you get RIGHT after eating. like when everyone crashes on the couch after thanksgiving and just lies there and digests. i think it's a natural thing for the body to want to induce sleep after eating. as a caveman, when you have a full belly, you don't need to hunt, so you should use that period to rest yourself for the next hunt.

You probably should eat a smaller lunch with fewer carbs.

You can get away with eating a lot in a limited window of time to get most of your day's calories, but preferably you would do it when you have some down time afterwards.

That is why i have 3 or 4 small "lunches" throughout the day, I never get sleepy after eating since I just eat a little bit and I have more energy. It is better for keeping your metabolism up too.

You can watch the same behavior with animals in the wild. Especially carnivores. They tend to sleep and rest after feeding and sex.

Man has been eating fatty and greasy foods for millions of years. Our body craves them as high quality foods that protect against famine.

Hell, the fat per calorie consumed by us is at an all time low. It doesn't seem to be doing us any better. Fatty foods are not the enemy
