There is a current phone scam going around where the caller claims to be from the Chinese embassy and needs your info about some credit card fraud or something. The thing is the initial call is a robocall all in Chinese. Supposedly it is targeting Chinese speakers. I have been getting these calls regularly for the past couple of weeks. I don't speak it, but my wife is Chinese, guilty by association I guess.

My wife was hit by this several months ago before it was known about through wechat. They claimed that they arrested someone in Shanghai with 1000s of credit cards and her name was on one of them. They were saying she is being accused of money laundering or something. She went back and forth with the people for a while, tried to say she would go to the Embassy to testify, oh but no someone in the embassy is under investigation about this. Checked her credit report, nothing fishy. Finally figured out it was a scam. Thankfully never gave any info.

Don't recognize the number, I let it go to voice mail.
Simple as that.

I may be getting the calls. I get like 2-3 random number calls a week. However I never pick up a number if i don't recognize it and if it's important, they will leave me a voicemail. If I get a call 2 or 3 times from the same number without a voicemail, I block that number.

I didn't even setup voicemail :awe: people that need me know they can text or email.

YES!!!!!!!!

I thought they acquired my ethnicity from FB / Android listening to my mic and sold that data to whoever in China or anywhere really. I'm not Chinese, but they just know I'm Asian so they sent me a Chinese scam msg.

People actually answer calls from numbers they don't know???!
If I don't recognize the number, it goes to VM. If they don't leave a message it gets blocked.

We received 2 robocalls which fit the OP's description in the past two weeks at our 206 (Seattle) area code landline.

Also seen an uptick in the broken english robocall about "your microsoft window license expire"

Simple as that.

Unfortunately with all the robocalls in the last few years, it has come to that. I use an app to block all callers not on my contact list but somehow they still get through sometimes (local exchanges should also be blocked but aren't) so when it rings I silence it.

I didn't even setup voicemail :awe: people that need me know they can text or email.

Do you have kids or extracurricular activities or even go to the doctor? There are plenty of situations where a legit non-contact number will call you / call you back. That's the only reason I still check voicemails after potential spam calls.

A lot of them are spoofing their numbers to make it seem like it's call from within your same area code. I guess this makes more people think it's a friendly local call and they pick up.

It's called neighbor spoofing and it's getting worse.
I actually got a call today from a person on my contacts so of course I answered. This is a cell phone so naturally when I did not hear anything I said hello again. And there it was, it clicked over and I was greeted with the all too familiar "Hello, this is Rachel from cardholder services". Click.

It keeps up and everyone's gonna have to leave VM!

At least on iOS if you block a number they can still leave a VM so if it's legitimate it's not like a total shutout.
