And yes, I'm excited to see what they do

no its not
simple as that. 2/4 is not a "reunion"
stupid

(and this comes from a long-time pumpkins fan)

when you consider James and D'arcy had basically zero input (creatively or performance-wise) on the Pumpkin's best works, and were only marginal musicians at best, AND had pretty negative attitudes by all accounts, AND James' solo album was terrible... I say it will still be the pumpkins without them.

D'Arcy yes (but her younger sister was HAWT). James? He was integral. My friends lived with them while they recorded Gish in Madison w/ Butch Vig, and while my friends recorded their album. They sid on several occasions actually that James was a fantastic musician, but it was simply Billy that controlled an did everything for the most part. There is no question that Billy is pretty much everything in the band, but I don't see how they can say "the pumpkins are back" when its only 50% of the band.

He said they are bringing the *** rock back? then promote My Chemical Romance and Muse? That's hardly Rawk now is it?

Im very glad to hear Billy Corgan is making music again, SP is a great band, even if you dont like that kind of music you have to admit they are talented.

I'll bump this by letting everyone know the "Tarantula" single is out and is pretty amazing, this coming from someone that isn't a particularly huge Pumpkins fan.

No, I thought they were terrible to begin with.
Well, I'm always open to some new music. What would you recommend?
I'm not here to recommend anything. Your thread title asked a question, and I answered.
If you like them, then good for you.

Can't stand Corgan's voice, personally. I guess some of their tunes didn't sound too bad if you can overlook his "singing".

Theoretically I'm looking forward to some new SP. Based on their past work that is.

Sadly "artists" like to "progress" which means they limit themselves to a good album or two and then forget they ever knew how to make great music.

I heard the new single eariler this week. It's not bad at all. Hopefully the rest of the album is as good.

Check out that new group (i think) silverside pick up or something like that with their song lazy eye.

I swear when I first heard that song on the radio I thought it was a new SP song before the singing kicked in.

I'm not trying to say the singer sounds like Billy at all but their music sounds like SP older stuff IMO.

yeah, that song is a straight no-shame rip-off of "Drown."

silversun fckups more like it.

i'm really happy about it, the new single Tarantula isn't bad either. I might go see them at the Virgin Music Fest.

50% of a band working together again isn't the same as the band being back together.

Just like if Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr made a song together, it wouldn't mean the Beatles were reunited.

They are just using the name to sell some albums. It will most likely show in the quality of the music. Just like Zwan wasn't bad, but it was really just Billy Corgan trying some new stuff. Same stuff, different name.

I own some Pumpkins albums because they aren't a bad listen from time to time. It's safe to say that while I liked their "harder" stuff a little bit better, Corgan's voice got progressively more annoying as they kept making music. I'm not going to say that D'arcy Wretsky or James Iha MADE the band, but 50% isn't passing by any standards I know, 50% of a band isn't the band getting back together, and 50% of a band isn't going to make an album good. If 50% of the original is good enough to be called the Smashing Pumpkins, then when two members left in the first place, why couldn't the other two keep the band going? Reuinions are for when artists realize that their fame has died and they are struggling to keep their head above water and make a pitiful attempt reliving their glory days.

I know my knowledge of music isn't the deepest, but I can't think of one band that has sucessfully broken up, "returned" with only a shell of itself, and made it big again.
