Nope. I like old-school pencils. Pens often don't write, mechanical devices usually have lead that is so thin it breaks before I write my first letter (I have a heavy writing style). Pencils just work. You just have to learn to write when pencils aren't sharp. But I figured that out in elementary school and it has never held me back since.

I actually like a big heavy mechanical pencil... like the ones you see in those pen/pencil gift sets around christmas time. The lead is usually 0.7mm, and with the combination of the lead plus the heavy body of the pencil, it lets you write a nice dark line.

Mars plastic > all other erasers

I always thought that the standard issue pink ones were better on rougher paper, but that you wouldn't be caught dead using anything but a Mars eraser for something like vellum (mechanical drawing class -- do they even have that any longer?). The kneaded grey erasers got too dirty too quickly, and those crumbly gum ones were the worst.

I use plastic for everything, but ink on paper. For that you need those grey erasers, but they aren't so much erasers, and paper removers. You can't get decent ink of paper without removing a layer of paper.

I love a good wooden pencil and most mechanical pencils. I HATE crappy erasers. Nothing is worse than going to erase something and seeing a long black smudge across the page...

Strangely enough, I like the smell of a freshly ground wood pencil.

I'm not particular with wooden pencils, but it has to be American, or European.

Edit:
It also has to be a real wood body. Synthetics suck.

Hate pencils.

I'll take a nice gel pen, one of the expensive ones ($20+/dozen), and preferably 20 pound paper.

If you aren't using a Ticonderoga then I could understand why you would be unhappy with a standard pencil. Any other standard pencil sucks compared to a Ticonderoga.

I was just introduced to the awesomeness that is Ticonderoga pencils today. Holy crap I feel like I have lost years to shitty pencils.

And the eraser was like butter, I barely touched the paper and the graphite just disapeared of the page, what a pleasure.

I still prefer pencils to pens. Something about the feel of graphite moving over paper I suppose. The strange thing is that I almost never get to use pencils anymore. When you're an adult, everything is done in pen.

0.7mm mechanical pencils for me.

My coordination isn't too good to begin with, and I tend to find it difficult to translate thought into text reliably - I change my mind a lot as I'm writing something, so writing with pen means lots and lots of scribbled-out mistakes, either in sentence structure, or else because of illegible writing.
(It's the same way with typing: My backspace and delete keys get an awful lot of action.)

If it's made in Canada or the US, pencils are usually decent, it's the made in China ones that suck. They break super easily and don't sharpen well. They are too brittle. I tried mechanical pencils back in school and I also found the leads too brittle, I constantly broke them. Guess I just write hard.

I rarely use hand writing instruments though, I like everything digital. At work people give me a piece of paper with a reference guide on something, I always ask if they have a digital copy. Much easier to organize.

Zebra M301 .7mm pencil for me all the way. Though, I do also use a G301 pen quite often as well.
