Anyone else have a 3GS that is ridiculously slow with iOS 4?

In lots of really bizarre places... like going to respond to txt, and my keyboard doesn't register keypresses for a few seconds. Or hit the reply button on an email and it takes 2-3 seconds for the window to pop up.

This is with other apps turned off, nothing in background etc. I can't help but wonder if this is a way to 'push' people into getting the new phone.. I could understand if there were background apps running or slow loads - but I'm seeing in places that seemingly should be affected.

I'm also getting a LOT more typos.. Hrm..

My 3GS has had occasional hiccups and very short freezes, but overall it feels faster with iOS 4 than it did with 3.1.3.

I don't but a coworker's 3G is really slow, exhibiting the same symptoms as described.

iOS4 works great on my 3rd gen Touch -- everything seems faster to me.

I can vouch for the 3G being dog shit slow on iOS4, but like I said no problems here with the 3GS

I have found that some apps are not closing properly. Double tap the home button and look at your backgrounded apps. You can test if this is the case by holding your finger over one of the apps until it shakes and brings up the close option. Close out of as many apps as you can and see if the speed improves.

I have crashes, sometimes really poor battery life, and have had a freeze so far. Feels like it was rushed out the door.

I haven't heard of the 3GS having problems but a lot of 3G owners including myself have had bad experiences with iOS4. My advice? If you have a 3G iPhone, original iPod Touch, or 2G iTouch, don't upgrade. Half the features that make iOS4 worth while don't even work with these models anyway.

Oh, I read all of the info about iOS4 slowing down the 3G and ignored it all at my peril
It's like OS7.5 on a LC575 with little RAM. Still an operable phone and smart phone but OH SO SLOOOOOOOOW !

Any hints on how to return to the old OS on the phone would be appreciated

no issues here at all with any of the companies Iphones. on 4.0 all 3GS's all seem to be faster.

but you may have too many apps running in the background like the above post pointed out.
check the new task manager.

Updated a 3G to iOS4 and have had no problems at all. I don't understand how so many are having problems with this upgrade.

I was actually about to post the very same thread here when I saw this one. My 3GS has shown the keyboard lag across all the apps but once it completely loads, its not that bad. My main issue is with Safari, Safari has never crashed on all my previous iPhones and I've had every single software/hardware combo since its been released. But Safari has crashed on me on an almost daily basis. It just freezes and if i try to exit and relaunch, it still freezes, the only way to fix it is to reboot the entire phone which leads me to believe that the memory is being overloaded with the quicklaunch task bar / multi-tasking functions. I don't blame Apple for designing the OS with the iPhone 4 in mind but it doesn't feel like they put any effort into making sure iOS4 works with older generation hardware. I am disappointed but I do want to get an iPhone 4. The antenna issues do not bother me because I always use a case with my phones anyways.

My 3gs is incredibly fast and responsive with iOS4. My wifes 3g was slow and terrible. She upgraded to the iPhone 4, problem solved. Wiped the 3g (restored as a new phone), brought to ios4, issue is resolved. The phone (actually now a glorified deactivated iPod Touch) is a tiny bit sluggish but nowhere near as bad as it was after her upgrade with all the data.

I just updated..

To the other posters - It's slow with background apps off. I also have noticed shorter battery life (phone dies before 5:30 most days) (Edit: and I always close extra apps)

The thing that irks me the most is the massively increased typos. I found with the last release of iOS 3 that I could *almost* type without looking at the screen.. Now I have to pay careful attention to hit each key in the center. That's a really odd thing to have happen in a firmware update IMO.

I've noticed this as well. I think they must've totally revamped the autocorrect with the spell check addition of iOS 4. I don't mind spell check, but it's made autocorrect way worse for me.

Yea, I hope they go back to the old algorithm or whatever, because I am definitely making more typos now.

My 3gs was an update. It was rather quick too, while others complained about slow downloading and really slow backups - mine went lickedy split. Have about 8 pages of apps too with a ton of email and 8gb or so of music and podcasts and a couple videos.
