Fuck no. CFL's use about 1/4 of the electricity to provide about the same amount of light...but at a higher purchase price. Fortunately, they seem to last a bit longer than incandescent bulbs...which helps to offset the purchase price.

When I switched our house over to all CFL bulbs, I sold the incandescent bulbs at a yard sale...$1.00/bag of 10.

Its a shame we even have to bother with this. I say let the market place decide...just like 8 track tapes, cassettes, etc, went by the wayside over time.

But NO...the gubment decides what you can have now.
gubment intervention isn't anything new, I don't think the market decided that leaded fuel was no good.

Anyway I have halogen bulbs in most of the house. My gubment has banned just the 2 worst categories of incandescent bulbs (F and G). Apparently most bulbs are in the E category.

God bless your heart. If I had found a bag of used bulbs for sale I would have laughed at you....then bought them. :awe:

Really? I must be having good luck or you're having bad luck. Many of the bulbs in my home are GE and have lasted years each. We're talking 5+ hours a day too.

Maybe the power is crappy in my area, IDK. Possible I got into a batch with an abnormal high fail rate, I'll probably try them again eventually..

I have a rotary telephone for sale if you're interested.

I'd love to have an early rotary phone. I have some from the 60s, but they don't have the charm of the very early phones. I don't even have phone service, but I'd get one just to see it sit there.

I guess pulse dial still works. Any idea if/when it'll be gone for good?

a lot of cfls seem to not last long if you shut them on and off a lot (like in a bathroom). the cfls in my house that have lasted for years are the ones that just get turned on and left on all evening.

I've had extremely mixed luck. I have some that have been going for a long time, and I've had others die within a week. Guestimating an average, I'd say CFLs last exactly as long as incandescents for me. Add in all the other negatives, they aren't worth the hassle/ugliness.

I have at least 30 CFLs throughout my house, only had a few ones fail and pretty sure it was defective and not actually burned out. They smell really funny when they go. Similar smell as a failed overclock.

Based on what I've seen of lifetime estimates given in datasheets for fluorescent tubes, and on my own testing, each power-on can take about 30-60 minutes away from a CFL's life.
Typically, instant-start is harder on the tube than slower startups.

For fluorescent tubes, a warm-start or programmable ballast is easier on the tube and its internal electrodes, so you can get more startups out of them.

I keep all of my bulbs. I literally have a drawer filled with lights bulbs. Some are CFL, some are halogen, some are ghetto incandescent, some shine light in all directions, some are directional. I don't see the point of throwing out a good incandescent bulb. If it's a light in a closet that is turned on for 10 seconds at a time, why would I switch it to CFL?

Not really. Both incandescent and CFLs are running about $1.40 each now.

Never had a smoke-out failure. They usually just die and the bulb goes black.

I won't use CFL's because they emit UV light which causes fading.

As a complete in box retro game collector, that's a big NO.

When we moved, I replaced all the CFL's in the house with cheap incandescent bulbs. IIRC, I got a box of 16 for less than $5.00 @ home depot.

Halogens do too, which is why they usually have UV filter lenses and are kept in enclosed fixtures.

I think incandescents might, maybe even LEDs despite what manufacturers say... Something about all light sources emitting some. It's just that CFLs are designed from the start to produce UV, and the only produce visible light because of the phosphor coating. If the coating is cracked, then it goes right through the glass, which is what I'm concerned about.

Studies say that once you get more than a foot away from the bulb, the UV isn't that bad. Add in a diffuser/shade and you're okay too. It's desk lamps that are the concern.
