Obviously human body won't necessarily take on exactly that amount, but it's good rough indicator that you will gain a significant amount of weight from just 3 cans of soda a day, assuming your diet and level of physical activity remains otherwise the same. Doesn't take into account stimulant property of caffeine (which would have a marginal lowering effect from increase in metabolism, I guess), either.

I'm not arguing for soda's health benefits, but you've put up some very misleading figuring there. By your logic (450 calories = weight gain of 46.92 lbs), then a 2,000 calorie diet would result in me gaining 208lbs a year. I know soda calories are not healthy, but regardless, your dislcaimer "obviously humany body won't take on that exact amount" is an important one-it kind of makes your whole equation pointless.

I believe his figures are intended to be for calories above the amount that you would otherwise require. The 2,000 calorie diet is around the amount that people burn every day, and as such none of it gets stored as fat.

That said, homeostasis is incredibly powerful in the human body. I submit that an otherwise healthy person who adds a can of soda per day to their diet will see a gain of less than a single pound of weight by the end of the year. You have to overconsume regularly to gain weight.

Yeah, I thought it was obvious I was referring to caloric intake beyond what is burned by the body from activity and basal metabolism.

Jagec, you're right, you would have to overconsume regularly. It's fairly easy to do so when you are taking in liquid calories on top of an unhealthy diet. Most healthy people don't consume 3 cans of soda, though the ones that do probably burn off most or all of the excess calories. Like I said, the calculation for weight gain based on 3 cans of soda a day for a year just gives you an idea of why it might not be good to drink that much on top of a balanced diet. 41g x 3 of sugar per serving on a regular basis isn't exactly a good idea, either, and any medical doctor can tell you as much.
