In my opinion, they should be used as crutches until you get to a proper machine with a keyboard. They are NOT meant to replace computers. But this is just me.

I have usb wireless dongles inserted into mine, can just walk in and use my wireless keyboard and mouse on the tablet. Can also remote desktop to my home pc with the tablet and still use the mouse/kb connected to the tablet.

Could you go tell all the so called "industry insiders" who keep telling anyone who will listen that this isn't the case.

I might get a Nexus tablet if it comes out since it is rumored to be $200 or less.

But I probably won't.

Sickening. Use Bluetooth.

This is what Anand said:

Today we have a first-world-problem with tablets, including the iPad - they are spectacular for certain usage models, but frustrating for others. Tablets aren't notebook replacements yet, but they can be more useful than a notebook depending on what you're doing. At the same time, tablets can be considerably worse than a notebook - again, depending on what you're doing. The solution to having the best of both worlds is to switch between or travel with two devices: a tablet and a Mac/PC. Ideally we'd like to see consolidation where you'd only need one.

The newest generations of ultrabooks (including Macbook Air) and Windows 8 tablets (especially convertible ones) are going to start eating iPad sales by year's end.

Greater functionality and power (which is what most netbooks lacked) in addition to lightweight portability are attractive selling points to people who need to work on the go, or who want higher end gaming than the iPad or Android tablets can deliver.

I want a Zenbook or the new Samsung Series 9 so bad. There's a healthy amount of competition in the ultrabook category early this year, and I'm hoping prices continue to drop from just below $1,000 to below $800. I wouldn't even consider a tablet at that point.

yea no as ichiasin said, those can't play games worth jack.

laptops are an entirely different thing. you only whip one out when you are sitting down for quite a while, otherwise its not worth the effort.

it's cool to have one, just don't need one yet. If I bought one, it will just take up space on my coffee table, and I might use it to check my emails, facebook once in awhile, or maybe download an app to turn it into a TV remote, but don't really need to pay $600 for that.

im starting to look for a better 7" tablet than the nook color i have. work gave me an ipad2, and while its a nice device...im not paying for apps for it when i already have stuff purchased for android that i like, and as much as i use google services. that and at 10" I find it uncomfortably large.

kinda want a dual/quad core 7" 720p ICS tablet so im keeping my eyes peeled. i have a 4.3" android phone that i love, but sometimes its not big enough to work like i want. ill always have to use a laptop for things (i work in IT so its a necessity) but having the nook color is nice at times, its just not *quite* what i want it to be.

i love the 7" form factor though. im much more comfortable with that and its easier for me to carry around than an ipad.

I had considered a transformer prime with the keyboard dock. i could *almost* forget needing a laptop with that, except i use visio at work extensively and, again, when used as just a tablet i really dont care for size

as it stands, ill usually take my nook color when i travel, as opposed to my personal laptop (timeline x i3 1.3ghz 11") because it does enough in a convenient way.

I like my Asus EEE Transformer. I prefer to bring it with me than my laptop when I'm out of town for work.

Lenovo came out with a prototype unit during a recent tradeshow, may have been CES.

It was essentially a laptop you could convert into a tablet.

In my eyes, this is the future. This design is the one that bridges the tablet world with the laptop world, and it's incredible nobody else has come up with something like this since. A tablet will never be a replacement for a laptop, so why not have the best of both worlds?

asus eee pad slider is another option. solves some of the keyboard issues, just needs more cpu horsepower.

The idea isn't new. There have been convertible tablets for quite a while now. The first ones were operated by stylus and were resistive touchscreen.

It's just the hardware is getting better now (and cheaper) and a new Windows OS (Windows 8) adds functionality and ease to the touch interface.
