There's something amiss about this picture. It looks like a whale made out of garbage, not a whale that was swamped by garbage. If it had that much garbage in its mouth, I doubt the beach and the ocean would be that clean.

Every once and awhile I do it accidentally (ie a small scrap of paper accidentally falls out of my pocket and windy day and suddenly it's 100 feet away and going). Aside from that, never. I feel incredibly guilty on the accidental days, I can't imagine doing it on purpose.

I hate littering!

Can remember going out with my Dad on Earth-day when I was little and picking up all the random garbage in our neighborhood.

Years ago with an ex, she randomly throws a plastic bottle out of the car as we're driving. She couldn't understand why it wasn't OK "as long as nobody saw it". Some people, there just aren't adequate words. *sigh*

Not intentionally. Closest I come is tossing out an apple core, or a banana peel. Those items will turn back to dirt, I try to save it for my compost bin, but sometimes I just toss them. On occasion, a piece of paper will block out of my car and I can't catch it, so there's that.

I literally don't.
Unless I'm traveling and have a fruit remnant to pitch, like peach pit, apple core, orange peel. And then not around buildings or manicured lawns. Just overgrown areas.
But that's, like, once a year. I typically don't nom fruit on-the-go.

Bothers me when people have loose trash in the back of the pickup that flies out once they reach adequate speed.

I dont litter and hate people who do. Fortunately i dont really see it happen around here aside from asshole smokers who throw their cigarettes out car windows. I think we get more accidental littering from people who cant figure out basic trashcan planning.

I actually had this same thought the other day.

Someone in my neighborhood has been "littering" the area with "Please Do Not Litter" signs. And it got me thinking, do we really have a big littering problem in our neighborhood? I've not really noticed an issue in the past, I'm sure it happens but for some reason those signs make me want to throw trash at them.

I can't remember ever littering, maybe as a kid but it's such a stupid and self-centered thing to do.

I don't "litter," and I recycle, etc., but the following things don't "count" IMO:

1) Dumping (liquid) coffee or diet soda onto a bush. Anything with sugar in it gets brought home and rinsed down the drain.
2) Anything which is completely edible (bread, etc.) Squirrels or geese will get it soon. Banana peels and apple cores are "trash," not "food" and are disposed of properly.

Obviously, I eat in my car a lot and my rules are selfish justifications for whatever makes my life easier, particularly with a limited number of cup holders. But I bag up most of my garbage in the car and dump it in the bins at gas stations and stores.

I don't litter, for the most part, but I don't see any real harm in throwing an apple core or banana peel into the woods on the side of the road somewhere. (But not on a showroom lawn or golf course.)

I also don't see harm in pulling small leaves or twigs (or ice or snow) and leaving them on the side of your car.

I also pour the remainder (1" or less) of a coffee or soda out onto the pavement in a parking lot, sometimes. As long as there's nothing solid in it, except for ice, which of course, melts in due time.

Those are my excepts to the rule of "do not litter", as I feel that they do no real harm.

Now, throwing trash, McD's wrappers, soda bottles, plastic bags, non-fully-bio-degradable food items, etc. - THAT would be a serious problem if everyone did that. So I don't. Basically, this is "Golden Rule" stuff, as applied to trash.

The harm from disposing of apple cores and whatnot on trails is that it attracts animals and they tend to develop begging behavior or they become too friendly around people. Pack in, pack out.

I used to - but really still am - heavily against littering. But I have taken a slight back-step when someone does something like leave a banana peel. Anytime something that is bio-degradable is dropped, I really have to ask the question - what harm was honestly done? No different than when a fruit producing tree drops it and no one picks it up, right? Now I'm not a scientist, so I have no idea what occurs if you drop it in a downtown city concrete area vs. a nature trail as far as biodegrading - but you can see where I stand on the issue overall.

Also cigg butts - although disgusting - isn't it just paper and tobacco? Aren't those pretty bio-degradable?

Obviously not the same to someone that drops plastic bags, Styrofoam, plastic/glass bottles, etc... DIAF if you think that is in any way acceptable

I never litter, at least not actual garbage. I would not consider natural waste as being littering since it was probably destined to the ground anyway but landed on your car instead. Ex: leaves or snow. Though some laws can be weird, would not be surprised if it would be illegal in some places.

I've chucked the occasional apple core out the car window into a field. I don't feel guilty for that.

I certainly stand corrected based on the first sentence there. That's also why I ended it in a question though

EDIT: So it's the FILTER that is not biodegradable but the rest is?
I don't know how much of the product is actually biodegradable. Read section 2 for butt info

Cigs also Leach toxic chemicals into the environment

Yeah, cig butts are a definite no-no. I dont smoke, but at the apt. complex I'm at, people self-police and take their spent butts inside to dump in the trash. We had a new tenant here that didn't understand that rule, was a bit of a pain to get them to learn and clean up after themselves.

Not typically. They usually have acetate filters that take forever to go away. When I smoked, I rolled my own. Only tobacco and a featherweight paper. I'd drop it, grind it with my foot, and it disappeared. Someone would have had to get on their hands and knees to tell there was ever a cigarette there.
