Sticking with Windows 7 on all my machines for now. If and when I upgrade it'll probably be to 8.1 Pro or 10 Pro. Still holding out for a version of Windows that isn't loaded with bloat and crap I don't use.

Windows 10 Slim with nothing but the core OS and I would upgrade in an instant.

:thumbsup::thumbsup: Maybe sell it as a builder version or something.

That's what I'm hoping to end up with.

Had to do a clean install of win 10 pro (with unused win 7 key) on new build because win 7 doesn't have native nvme support (using a samsung 951 nvme).
I've set the auto updates to 'ask first' - can turn them off completely on pro (group policies)
Next - get rid of cortana and all the dumb tiles and 'apps' (anyone else hate that word?)
Got to get it to recognise my monitor's max resolution (painful)
Not impressed it didn't recognise my r9 390 - not exactly rare
It didn't install any generic drivers for my ethernet port either, so I had to install the bloatware that gigabyte supply (which defaulted my internet connection to 100kb down, 10kb up - oh the fun that wasn't - like a slow 56k modem)
I think with a lot of taming, win 10 could work

Core wise been done already, ie Linux has core distros, in many ways Linux is way ahead of any Windows, too bad I game a lot or I would ditch all my Windows and move over to my Linux distros 100% all the time.

As to Win7 well you guys will have to do something in 2020, will be very interesting to see how you guys handle death of Win7 RIP.

End of the day I've nothing bad to say about Win10, excellent speed/stability and fine for gaming etc...

Not going to happen. M$ more than ever is seeking revenue through B2B solution by data mining. They'll bloat you til you float to the top of their coffers. Not going to fault them as its their business, not mine.

That's on the consumer side, but enterprise will still have free pass from most of the crap.

But yeah, I don't see Google giving up doing the same things on Android either. So unless majority finds this as an important issue, Microsoft will get away with this. They'll offset lower interest for PC platform by making $ on spying.

I figure by 2020 I will need a new computer anyway so who cares if my system is running Win 10 or Win 7 at that point.

So I intend to stay with the operating system I like which is Win 7.

I see nothing in Win 10 that I need right now.

I still might upgrade at the last minute although I hate the idea of forced updates.

If I was still on Windows, I'd be sticking to win7 for quite a while, and probably looking into switching to Linux. 8.x is a disaster usability wise, and 10 is basically a trojan. Though with proper firewall rules you can probably 100% stop the spying stuff, but if I have to do that to feel safe I rather just use another OS.

Windows 8.1 is working fine for me thus far. I still refuse to upgrade to Windows 10 until most of the bugs are worked out.

However, I know that I have limited time for a FREE upgrade so I might have to wait until the last week to download it for free.

Anyone else feel the same way?
I want some of what you are smoking!!

I thought MS said that if you dont update every so often, they would revoke updating priveliges? Hence making win10 useless, unless they have changed policy since w10 is slow going.

Nope. I only keep Windows cuz of gaming, and lately I dont love gaming that much.

Am gonna keep Win 7 until its physically impossible then I'm switching to Linux.
I might purchase a cheap Steam Machine to play the older, less demanding games.

No interest in Windows 10, unless they shut off privacy violations, then I might magically develop an interest. Huge market opportunity for someone to step up and offer a secure OS.

Yeah but isn't MacOS or Linux secure enough for you?

You actually cannot find exactly what Windows 10 worst privacy violators do. Microsoft made wording so ambiguous and generic that everybody's interpretation is different.

There's FUD from both sides, from "OMG it is recording your every keystroke and copying all your private files" to "nah it does not record almost any keystrokes, but it is all good for you, it makes OS better"

I'm still a Win 10 Labrat I guess, have 11082 on the main rig and it's working fine.

But have tried to tame it a bit also here and there since beta.

Unsubstantiated?

I found this, unless its changed.

Failure to do so will risk not getting future security updates to the operating system, in some cases. That's the scenario emerging for organizations adopting the so-called "current branch for business" (CBB) update model for Windows 10 that has been proposed by Microsoft.

The weakest link in security is the end user anyways. Point is, you don't really have to use Windows 10 Home/Pro, if you don't like it.

Indeed! Which is why I'm still on 7. And I agree about 'end user security,' I have very few problems directly from my actions, it's outside influence that I'm concerned about.

And I still have Vista SP2 on a couple of computers (I prefer how Vista looks compared to 7). But I have many computers, running all sort of different operating systems, so I never get the itch to upgrade something in particular. Yeah, I like to experiment a lot and break things in order to fix them. Heh.

All I can say is this, with Windows 10 it's best to have new hardware. If you are running something older, chances are it will not perform as it should. A proper symbiosis between software and hardware is essential.

P.S. I have Windows 10 Enterprise on my main rig. Another bunch of my computers are running Windows 8.1 Pro and I don't plan to upgrade them to Windows 10 Pro any time soon and I think, you know why.

My guess is the only way you are going to get a "win 10 slim" will be a hacked version, where all the garbage has been removed, and you are left with a clean OS. It will be interesting to see if this happens. Face it, it's only a matter of time, considering that some have already come out with telemetry blocks and GWX block.

Yeah and as soon as you update it, all that crap will be back. Settings get reset, unauthorized software removed, after every major update as we have seen that happen in the fall. Too much hassle to babysit it, imo.

None of my settings were touched after the 1511 update on my PC, or on a couple other systems I had set up with Win10.

Some people did. It was a bug. They pulled the 1511 update, fixed it, and re-released it.

If you try to update a custom (i.e. hacked) Windows 10 build, things will be reset with all the crap back. You would have to babysit every (major) update to ensure the cleanliness of your OS. Easier to use a different OS, all together.

I've seen more bugs in Linux distro's than in Windows. Now granted I haven't crossed any bugs that I became aware of in OSX, not that it means anything, just my experience thus far. But I come across some total BS sometimes with Linux distro's, especially KDE.
