Windows 8.1 is working fine for me thus far. I still refuse to upgrade to Windows 10 until most of the bugs are worked out.

However, I know that I have limited time for a FREE upgrade so I might have to wait until the last week to download it for free.

Anyone else feel the same way?

What bug is stopping you from upgrading?
There are always bugs in the OS, heck I bet 8.x has as much, if not more than 10.

(1) Image your current Win 8 install

(2) Upgrade to Win 10 to secure free license

(3) Restore saved image from step 1

(4) Do clean install of Win 10 if/when you feel like it

Staying with Win7 for now. I'm still troubleshooting an intermittent issue on my recent Haswell build so I wouldn't rock the boat for that reason alone, but having said that Win7 is and has been perfect for my needs.

@ Shamrock, 2020, yup.

I agree with you, OP. There's just no point (yet), IMO.
Currently, pretty much all I see in Windows 10 are disadvantages (data collection, forced updates and ads/apps, bugs, slowness).
If one day these things are no longer an issue, I'll consider using it. But right now there's just no point.

This.
Once you do it, you can then permanently switch to 10 at any point in the future, even in 2020.

(Also, if I may speculate: Microsoft will extend the free upgrade date, if enough people don't switch. They're desperate to get people onto 10 and it's you who are doing them a favor by installing it.)

Although the start menu is sweet, it's really not a killer app as I think 7's menu is more efficient. My biggest headache with 10 I have is that even with a clean install on a brand new Dell machine with all drivers up-to-date, there are inexplicable crashes and glitches about twice a week in an always-on environment. Minor gripe is that I can't have display scaling working with Remote Desktop Manager of which I rely upon heavily to monitor servers at work and used to work flawlessly in 7 and 8.1. It has to be native in docked mode which ends up having less real estate (edit- fixed with external manifest). I will not be upgrading my main home systems as 7 and even 8 have proven to function more reliably for me and my usage.

OP, the November 1511 update fixed a lot of things. Fixed all the gripes that I had anyway.

Your problem is it is on a Dell machine JK

Is this issue since after the November 1511 update?

Gah, you know it's probably Dell. I hate prebuilts but my boss won't let me use a self built.

This is a fresh 10586.14 ISO with the Media Creation Tool.

No issues here. 10586.36 on a G1850. 7 is old and 8.1 has been replaced.

Not me. I do miss Windows 8.1's touch-centric features (the charms and task view mostly), but Windows 10 is the better OS overall. W10's start menu is terrible. I wish I could have the start screen back without forcing everything else into fullscreen mode.

Sure doesn't help at all when anyone of any profession in any setting conscienable says they are not having a problem therefore no one else should be having problems. Thanks

You know it usually takes several years for an OS to mature to a level before a business will consider it for widespread deployment. If I were running a business I'd stay with 7 for the menu unless they would install classic shell and then I'd use 8.1 until 10 becomes more mature. I love 10 but I see stupid issues, especially after WU has an adverse affect on software like Office which most large businesses use.

Is this really 100% true? Will they void one of the licenses/keys eventually?

I thought MS said that if you dont update every so often, they would revoke updating priveliges? Hence making win10 useless, unless they have changed policy since w10 is slow going.

I think 10586 is the new build that was sent out through Windows Update in December, it wasn't compatible with a customer's bit of hardware. We're currently waiting for a new driver from the manufacturer (the issue has been acknowledged with the driver that worked fine with the RTM release of Win10).

It's true. It works because you only have one installation activated at a time.

What you can't do is upgrade to 10, then actively run the upgraded 10 and reinstall your old 7 on a second PC. It's one at a time, switch back and forth however you please, just like any previous Upgrade license.

Yes, I will stay with Win7 until its EOL updates (2020?)

That's me. I upgraded my W8.1 machine just for the fun of it, but rolled it back when I didn't see anything that made me go 'wow!' In fact, I reloaded W7 on that machine (I have an extra license) and my 8.1/10 license is in limbo now. I've got W7 running on all 6 machines I manage and it will stay that way.

Staying with win7 until it expires, then I'll move to 8.1 and stay with 8.1. I may decide to finally go with 10 for just gaming, and then my main boot will probably be Linux Mint or Linux Zorin.

I have a throwaway computer I'm using with Windows 10, and I gotta say.. not liking this bug that renders the Start Menu useless. Had to use the damn Command Line of all things to fix it. This was months ago, though, so maybe they've fixed this deal-breaking bug. I'll stick with Windows 7 for now.

Not only did i refuse W10 i also refused 2 copies of W8.1
I have 3 licenses of W8.1 on 2 desktops and one laptop. I switched 1 desktop
and the laptop to Linux. Glad i did. I have W10 to thank in a way for this. It forced
me to seriously look at Linux and i am very happy with it. The remaining W8.1 will stay
for gaming only. I also turned off defender/firewall/windows update and gone local account only for the gamer. I use 3rd party program for security/firewall.

I also got a co-worker on Linux as he said he tried W10 and hated it. Let him install Linux and he loves it. So that is 3 Windows licenses in the dustbin.

Thank you for the confirmation. I want to keep 8.1 but was worried about being forced to get 10 or lose the opportunity.

8.1 is an excellent OS and is the fastest that I've used recently. I've seriously considered going back to it on my desktop because the strangeness I've seen from IE in 10. MS just released a flash update for it so I'll have to see if it makes a difference.

Not sure I've seen this anywhere. I believe I did see something about getting support required you to be up to date, however (aka, don't call and complain about the RTM version from July 2015 not working for you anymore in July 2017, the answer will be "go update, then call us back" or something.)

Sticking with Windows 7 on all my machines for now. If and when I upgrade it'll probably be to 8.1 Pro or 10 Pro. Still holding out for a version of Windows that isn't loaded with bloat and crap I don't use.

Windows 10 Slim with nothing but the core OS and I would upgrade in an instant.
