Just upgraded my 3G to 4.0 from 3.1.2 and unlocked using redsn0w and unltrasn0w. No problems so far.

On iPod touch 2g.

Battery seems warmer.

Can't use wallpaper cuz Jobs doesn't know how to simplify a fucking 2d image and animated icons/dropshadows to where it's not an issue on older hardware.

All I get out of it is folders which is great but... this is overall meh.

I always wanted an animated icon and wallpaper like Android I dont know why Android is far superior than iOS 4.0...maybe Steve doesnt want them for the sake of battery life?

Mine seems faster, especially in the iPod app (the only thing that matters on an iPod).

If you're referring to Safari on iOS 4 well I've had no problems running Anandtech forums.

Now, I did have some stability problems and quirks when I initially used the Gold Master release before the official release... when I updated to the official release I don't seem to have any of these issues.

I updated my 3rd gen iPod Touch. One additional benefit is that the Wifi seems to pick up weak signals a bit better.

iPod Touch 2G shows wallpaper options in the settings but does not set wallpaper. Probably a bug as it's not supposed to be there.

On the note of multitasking. While it isn't really a true implementation the fast switching in and out of everything is nice. Folders are welcome too.

Running a 3GS everything is ok. I think it's overall somewhat faster, it feels zippier. I can't comment on battery life yet.

How's the speed? Some on [H] have said that it became very slow.

With multitasking on the 3G it is very very slow. I am selling the phone tomorrow though after I pick up the 4. I am going to let the guy play with it before I restore it/unlock it again and see if he wants the multi-tasking or not.

My initial feeling of it is that icon folders and threaded mail rocks.

Other than that... I haven't seen much difference.

So I have installed ios4 and so far i like it. It seems snappier and love the background without the j/b. Everytime I j/b my iphone it goes to hell (iphone 3gs 32 gig) so i quit doing it.
But where are the instructions??? Dammit I want to know everything about it and how to work with it. Figured most of the stuff out but have no idea how to stop apps from running in the background. Right now alarm clock pro is running in the background grrr. I thought I turned off MotionX GPS but I had a compass point suddenly show up in the upper right hand corner and then disappear next I checked...So is there a ios4 for dummies yet???

Tap and hold an icon in the Multitasking bar.. then press the delete button in the upper left.

Since upgrading, I haven't been able to go into landscape mode for anything. Anybody else have this issue?

E-mail is completely b0rked for me on 4.0 using a 3GS.

'Scorched earth' install (No backup restored - completely clean and pure) on a brand-new 3GS. (warranty replacement after my old 3GS became ridiculously unstable)

I get:
'phantom' e-mails (phone pings and vibrates, but no e-mails received)
random number displayed on the 'badge' on the mail icon (bearing no relation to the number of e-mails received)
Duplicate/triplicate e-mails
E-mails that don't get marked as 'read'. They just stay 'unread' permanently - even if left open for 1 minute.
Blank e-mails (e.g. mails that say 'no sender' 'no subject' 'this message has no content')
E-mails which have been read, randomly disappearing from the inbox.

This is all on gmail. No other e-mail accounts configured. Looks to me like I'm not the only one with this prob - seen a few posts about it on the apple forums.

Note the blank e-mails - which cannot be accessed. Tapping on them ignored. The Yougov e-mail is legible, but cannot be marked as read. The radiologists e-mail is inaccessible when tapped - I just get a message 'this message has not been downloaded from the server'. Also note the random count of '3' unread e-mails.

As an aside, this happened with 4.0 gold master on my old 3GS, but I attributed that to the fact that the phone was hosed. Seems to be a software problem. This all happens on Wi-fi as well as on cellular.

E-mail is essentially unusable for me. I'm tempted to go back to the apple store and demand that they downgrade the firmware to 3.1.3 (at least that firmware had working e-mail) or replace the phone, if they can't flash on the old firmware for me.

Spotlight search can be configured on 4.0.

Check that searching e-mail/messages is switched on in
Settings -> General

Tap and hold an icon in the Multitasking bar.. then press the delete button in the upper left.

So, I assume the multitasking bar is the small bar across the top. Doing said instruction does nothing. And an interesting note, sitting at a local place of business where I know there is strong signal and 3G my phone was at one bar and on EDGE network. Thinking maybe I should have waited...

For the multitasking bar, I believe you have to dbl-click the home button (or whatever the main circle button is called).

The problem I am having is with Exchange with sub-folders that are pushed. I haven't had my 3GS but for a week and a half, but it seemed if I pushed my subfolder the Mail badge would increment with email from the subfolders. Now I only get the ding and no visible notification which sucks.

Unfortunately I am responsible for supporting the iPhones in our company and have advised our employees who have work provided iPhones to not upgrade at this time. Those who own their own phone but who sync with Exchange I've advised to take it into consideration that our department hasn't tested out the new OS yet and we may not be able to fully support it.

What Jalaram said.. Double click Home button. The small bar across the top, I consider the status bar.
