weird. does anyone else have a clock icon in their upper right hand corner of the home screen? double clicking brings up the icons on the bottom but nothing on top.

That's how the double click is supposed to work. That "second" dock are the apps either recently run, or paused.

The clock icon is an alarm that you set at some point. Go to Clock on the phone and the alarm section to turn it off.

I'm back on iPhone OS 3 now. iOS 4 performance on my 3G was just far too slow, to the point of serious functionality issues.

I suspect it's because the iPhone 3G only has 128 MB RAM (and a much slower CPU too).

Same here. I find websites seem to load quicker but everything else runs like cold molasses. Apple needs to release a patch.

How about fixing the fucking browser crashes?

I never noticed browser crashes on mine, just slow... everything!

Not surprising though. iOS3 had a ton of issues when it came out. Anyway, I downgraded and everything is running smooth as butter under 3.1.3.

For what it's worth, I haven't noticed any issues on my 3G. It's just as fast now as it was under 3.1.2.

I think I'm going to go back to 3.1.3 also on my 3g. Too many slowdowns, unusable google app (when you try to search, it just bogs down and forces a reset), missed calls because I can't answer the phone because its bogged down in an app, general slowness, and still dont have mywi fixed.

If anyone wants to downgrade to 3.1.3 on the 3G, Lifehacker has a good guide on how to do it. I used this method and it works. Big However. This method doesn't work with the 3GS.

So I "upgraded" to iOS4 against my better judgement and I already am extremely pissed:

1. I had to restore the phone to stock to get my data connection - managed to save my contacts but all my SMSes are gone. Seriously, there's no way to sync them with anything... Really Apple? I lost like 300 SMSes, some of which were important to me

2. The "multitasking" is a joke. I logged in to BeejiveIM, closed the app. Asked a friend to message me a few minutes later. I got the push notification, I opened up BeejiveIM but the app had to log-in to the servers anyway which takes like 5-10 seconds! Before, with Backgrounder, I was logged in the whole time and the messages were received the moment I selected a friend. With the way Apple does it, there's no workaround unless they write an extra API for the IMs... This is just sad.

The OS is snappy and fine, but so was my JB 3.1.3...

What else? My browser - Atomic Browser. Safari on the iPhone sucks balls - no fullscreen for example, also wasted space with the address bar which you cannot hide, the lower bar is too big and unnecessary, no proper tab support, no gestures, no ad block - Atomic Browser solves all that and more! But now, when I switch away from it and switch back to it, it reloads the pages again, every tab... Since the app is not running in the background anyway :/ Hopefully they will solve this somehow. I can't stand using Safari, it's so bad. AB is perfect.

In general I am very disappointed with the update. I lost so much compared to my JB 3.1.3, I don't want to use the phone now... Hopefully a JB will show up FAST and I can get my full backgrounding, task switching (with the awesome Pro Switcher), system wide gestures and SBSettings back...

EDIT: Using a 3GS with 16GB

EDIT2: Let's not forget about 3G Unrestrictor for YouTube, App Store and the videos running in the browser. The video and sound quality is so bad when those apps think you're on 3G (or won't allow things, like the app store for items over 10MB). It's just sad.

new updated BeejiveIM to work with iOS 4

Yes, I have that. It doesn't need to start the app each time now (saves a second... "yay"). The major issue, logging to the servers each time I go back to the app, is the real killer. Sometimes it takes up to 10 seconds to log-in. It completely kills the flow and usage for me, compared to the way it was with Backgrounding (as in, instant).

Hence the moment a JB is out, I'll like my iPhone again. Now it's just an annoying pocket weight (yes, I'm serious).

Well, if all you do on your device is IM, I can see that being annoying.. so why do you choose to put up with it? There are numerous reports that have stated this is how their multitasking was going to work, even threads on this forum.

I would just jailbreak and use Backgrounder (there is an updated Pwnage Tool and RedSn0w). I don't IM enough for it to be an issue, and if I am back and forth with someone I just leave the app open.

Since you were on 3.1.3 JB, you should have SHSH's saved on Cydia's Servers. You can restore your phone back to 3.1.3 and jailbreak again with Spirit. If you have the old bootrom and had 3.1.2 or SHSH's saved, then you could downgrade to 3.1.2, and upgrade to JB'd 4.0. Here is info on how to downgrade..
