I'm with you, OP, but nothing upsets me more than how HDR has ruined perfectly serene outhouses.

When HDR is done right, it looks awesome. But most people just use the photoshop filter and it ends up looking like some glowy, soft, and overly dark stuff.

Badly done HDR.

HDR shouldn't completely destroy pictures.

Properly done HDR enhances pictures because you can see all the details in pictures that have wildly different exposure requirements. Badly done ones will just look like shit.

I love the HDR mode on my phone's camera. Without it I can't even get a shot because it seems 80% of the time I want to take a picture with my phone its too dark for non-HDR.

HDR done right is a beautiful thing, and can be tricky to pull off. It's just become an overused technique by so many hack photographers. Worst examples I've personally seen though are in video games. There was a period there when HDR rendering was making games look very ugly and unnatural, for no real purpose other than it was expected.

I don't know how you can do HDR video in camera. Filters? Some sort of software voodoo going on there.

It's been over used and garbage since the first year it came out and went mainstream.

About 99 percent of the time it will be overused and look like a gimmick. The tiny 1 percent will do it right and look cool without being overdone. Everything has it's artistic place. HDR however never learned that and it's always dumped on the photo by the truck loads.

The image you posted has nothing to do with HDR. It's a single shot with overdone editing. There is no improvement in the blown out highlights, as you can see, which you would get with HDR.

I tend not to shoot HDR, as it is usually atrocious looking.

I heard somewhere long ago that the human eye can distinguish about 10 stops between darkest and lightest when looking at a real scene, say a mid day outdoor landscape with equal parts blue sky and trees in shadow. Take a picture of the same and the best cameras will record about 7-8 stops before either the highlights get blown out or the shadows are impossible to see into. HDR should be used to turn that 7-8 stop photograph into the 10 stop scene that you actually saw - and thats as far as HDR should ever go.

Um, what? HDR is great. Low lighting can actually be captured well, rather than washed out darkness from filtering down well-lit scenes, or having to deal with half of it being covered by the graininess of the sensors trying to compete against noise. They can people uber-pale, and plants uber-green, in Downton Abbey, thanks to having much more information when recorded to post-process than otherwise. I can take useable photos, in moderate light, of the poor treatment of a PC, before I go digging into it, and I'm no photographer.

What's not to like?

If someone takes a photograph and makes it look like crap, that's hardly the fault of technology getting better, any more than The Loudness War is.

The problem with HDR is that too many go overboard in its use and things look weird as a result, but we do have an expectation of what an image should look like. What we never ever have is an accurate recreation of a scene and this isn't really a camera but a display issue. Anyone who did physical darkroom work could tell you that trying to get the full range of tones on paper is impossible.

What we really want is HDR images on HDR displays.
