My Palm Treo Pro broke last month and I am using an old backup phone, a Sanyo SCP-200, until I can upgrade in January. I still have not gotten used to the txt messaging (T9 dictonary) and having no internet sucks. Hell this phone has no games. People get a kick out of it though and love the antenna.

What carrier? You know you can buy used phones on eBay, Craigslist, etc, then sub it into your plan, either via a sim card swap (AT&T, T-mo) or via an ESN swap (Sprint, Verizon).
Heck, you won't be tied down to your contract so you can hop onto a better fit plan anytime instead.

Unfortunately, yes

My HTC Hermes from 2006, cost $425 off Ebay:

I upgraded to WM 6.1. Still holding up!

I am with Sprint, my plan is a little weird (SERO). I never heard of an ESN swap, I thought you could not do that with Sprint. Anymore information on that?

I'm on sero using a treo pro. It's a pretty crappy smart phone but it's pretty thin and light. Does it's job.

I bought mine off ebay for cheap and activated on my sprint account. You could probably pick one up even cheaper now. You need to make sure the ESN is clear though. I think you just need to go to their website and select activate a phone. You put in the hex(? forgot the word) code and they'll give you the instructions to set up the phone. If it's a new phone it might take some time to be activated. If it's a used phone it should start working right away.

I hated going back to non-qwerty after my last phone broke. Sucks for browsing/texting.

I have an even older cell than that, its a Motorola C100, the screen is still black & white, no colors! Its a good resistant workhorse though.

I was thinking of upgrading to one of the newer SERO plans so I could get an HTC EVO 4G. I hear they are awesome. Not sure if thats what I want to do yet though

I still use my razr. I don't miss the internet because I save $30/month not using it.

This would be my phone for now. Old hand-me-down from the folks. I'm on their plan, they pay for it so I don't care. I rarely use it. My folks both have droids but they will be going down to something simpler eventually because they have no need for them. We all pretty much want a basic phone with keyboards for texting so might wait for one of those deals where you can get a couple for free.

I'm old and don't/wont text. My one requirement was that I had reception. Refuse to be in BFE running down some deadbeat and not have service.

Good deal. $30 gets you a data/text plan with a fair allocation of minutes!

ESN swap is basically when you tie another phone (via its serial # known as ESN) to your current account. The easy way to do this would be to buy any Sprint phone that you like off of eBay etc, then bring it into a Sprint store. They'll hook up your new phone to your existing number free of charge.

After using two different blackberrys, I decided to cancel my data and go back to an old school data plan. I just wanted something simple.....I really don't know why I'm regressing.

No, I just upgraded from an old SE k750 to a SE Cedar, and while it's a very basic telephone it's 1000x better than the old one. It's highly recommendable if you just want a phone, and don't want to spend a ton of money on a smart phone. The reason I upgraded was that the navigation key didn't work properly and the reception was very flaky.
