The thought of or seeing Steak and Shakes now makes me sad. After my dad was hospitalized with cancer he would have a shake to eat almost daily. Since they are a bit better than hospital shakes I would regularly stop by Steak and Shake to pick up a shake for my dad. At first he would inhale them but as time went by he would eat less and less of the shake. Towards the end he was too weak to eat any of it so they would just sit untouched by his bed and melt. I still brought them though because that was our little ritual

Sorry to hear man.

It's pretty tasty, I only get it when traveling since the one we had here closed (actually never went to that one, it was on the other side of the city so a good ~45 minute drive)

I can't believe anyone would rate McDonald's over Steak & Shake though

Some people here like to hate on McDonald's because they feel like that's the cool thing to do but they're wrong. You don't become the biggest fast food chain in the world if you have crap food. I'm not saying McDonald's is the best fast food but it's reasonably priced and the food is solid. It's better than Steak & Shake.

I eat at McDonald's at least once a month, it's fine and predictable. But there's no comparison whatsoever, Steak & Shake is far and away superior to McD's. Literally no contest.

Don't have any around here, but we travel a lot for my son's baseball (Illinois/Indiana/etc) and they are all over the place down there. When we're in that neck of the woods we almost always eat there a few times.

Mehh, they are ok.

Wendy's has better hamburgers. McDonald's have better milk shakes. The only thing that Steak & Shakes has is the Chicago style hot dogs imho. Of course I have not been there in a long time. Maybe they stepped up their game.

Roger Ebert mostly reviewed movies, but he shared his opinion on Steak & Shake with the world as well.

"If I were on Death Row, my last meal would be from Steak 'n Shake. If I were to take President Obama and his family to dinner and the choice were up to me, it would be Steak 'n Shake--and they would be delighted. If the Pope were to ask where he could get a good plate of spaghetti in America, I would reply, "Your Holiness, have you tried the Chili Mac or the Chili 3-Ways?""

Better than BK/McD, not as good as Five Guys. Price sits somewhere in between.

Shakes are garbage compared to any specialty shop, or if you don't want to get out of the car, Cookout.

I had Steak & Shake when I was in Champaign for school. I often went with former alumni (gf's parents), and they'd always pay... I was poor. Free food was awesome!

I remember it being fine. I tried Johnny Rockets in SoCa. I think that Johnny Rockets is conceptually the same . But Johnny Rockets is terrible, terrible, terrible food.

I don't miss Steak & Shake. I do miss Papa Del's and Jarling's Custard Cup.

When I moved to the Atlanta area the local folks from the area referred to it as Shit & Shake. I tried it once and ... well it gave me the cold shakes and I wanted to take a dump very badly.

I went to Five Guys for the first time today. Holy shit they give you a lot of food. I got bacon cheeseburger with jalapeño and onion, and a medium fries. I didn't know the burgers were 5" thick, and when you get a cup of fries they fill the cup, put it in the bag, then add a shit ton more on top. Spendy(boss paid though), but very good. I'll go back, but get smaller versions of everything.

During the summer of 1990 me, my older brother, his GF Janet, and this girl I was white knighting named Misty who was a dancer at Big Al's, all lived in a rented house near Bradley University in Peoria IL. I was selling weed, Janet worked at Denny's and my brother worked at Steak & Shake. Janet had acquired a few cases of mozzarella sticks from her work and my brother acquired two big bags of frozen burger pucks from Steak & Shake. The cooking technique for the burgers was to fry them on one side until they were thawed and then flip and smash them flat with the industrial spatula that my bro was smart enough to borrow as well.

We were living like fucking kings, burgers and cheese sticks every day. Double or triple burgers with cheese sticks in between patties at first, down to just basic hamburgers with mustard. By late August the good times were nearing their inevitable end though. Misty had broken my heart for the last time, a noise complaint led to arrests for the stolen street signs decorating the living room and an eviction notice, and the burgers were all gone.

Everyone went their separate ways, me down to Carbondale to sell weed and study accounting at SIU, my brother and Janet split up, and Misty continued sucking off any random customer who had cocaine to share.

To this day whenever I see a Steak & Shake it reminds me of that glorious summer. I can still smell the mix of weed, cigarettes, stale beer, stripper perfume, and fried burgers from inside that little rental house. I can't put my finger on it, but the few Steak & Shake burgers I've had since haven't tasted near as good as they did when cooked in that dirty kitchen next to the pile of Hefty bags filled with empty cans.
set it in austin and it's the plot of a (seedy) richard linklater film

It's crap. There's one less than 5 minutes from my house. The only thing good: 1) they send coupon all the time so you never have to pay full price if you like the food. 2) it's open 24/7.

McDonald's is better.

Time for your pills, dear.

Nope. Don't think I've ever even seen one...but cookies and cream milk shakes?

IKR? What kind of monster would mix such completely bizarre ingredients as cookies and milk? Next they'll be putting peanut butter and jelly between two slices of bread. Maybe mashing up potatoes with butter or some crazy nonsense. No, but the worst thing I ever saw...this might make you a bit ill...this guy had some macaroni noodles, and he put CHEESE all over them. I nearly spewed.

Jalapeño crunch burger ftw.
I really miss white castle though, I'm at least 1000 miles from the nearest one

White Castle a few miles from where I live. That's a place you go to once a year or every couple of years and eat some double cheeseburgers, then feel like crap afterwards and remind yourself that is why you only go once every year or two.

Do you have Krystals? It's pretty much same as White Castle except Krystals is superior because the burgers have mustard. And Krystals have chili cheese pup and chili cheese fries.

I have never had a White Castle, without mustard. And when traveling down south, I had Krystals that only came with fancy mustard.

Odd..

Their restaurants always seem to be dirty, and the service takes forever.

Who's they? People have mentioned like 15-20 different restaurants in this thread. Are you one of those people who plays an MMO and says stuff like "dude" or "wtf" with no further context?

Edit: Upon further reflection, you were probably replying directly and thus talking about Steak & Shake.

Steak n Shake 20 years ago was really expensive. Their prices didn't get much of a price hike since then. They are on the lower end of the fast food price spectrum now.

I usually get a reg cheeseburger with fries ($3.99)and ice tea/coke ($1.29).
Their burgers remind me of old diners I went to as a kid. Good stuff
