So my wife and I have a beautiful baby girl. She is just over 3 months old and we think she might have a hearing problem...
She passed her newborn hearing screening, and over the past few months everything seemed fine. She has reached all her milestones so far. Newborns mostly sleep and cry and when they are soothed, they are in your arms.... so it wasn't until recently that she has been more aware and starting to observe her world and move her head and all that. I guess I'm rationalizing why we didn't really observe it before, but for the last couple weeks we noticed that she won't turn her head to acknowledge a noise like her mom's voice.... and she doesn't startle either.
Call us bad parents but we've snuck up on her and made loud noises just to see if we get a reaction, and nope.....
Funny thing is, occasionally (only occasionally) she will startle when sleeping or when focused on something and a noise happens... but this is kinda rare and unpredictable. She also makes some babbling speech sounds... I'm hoping that is a good sign and indicates she has some or all her hearing...
So, we took her to her GP, and he agrees she is not reacting normally. Now we have to wait 5-7 days for insurance to approve a specialist and then go to see an audiologist...
God, I am hoping it is nothing! I can't imagine never being able to hear your mom's voice or some awesome music...
I keep telling myself that our house has been noisy from day one, we constantly have movies or music playing in her background and she is just so used to loud and sudden noises that she has learned to ignore them....
Certainly no matter what we love her and will do everything for her that we can, but it is just driving me crazy and is very stressful having to wait for insurance and doctor's offices.... everyday counts when it comes to hearing and language development!
I've been reading lots of things in preparation for the worst, cochlear implants, hearing aids, surgeries... we've also looked into sign language and started making some basic signs. She really likes it.
I was wondering if anyone on ATOT has experienced something similar and can point me to some useful resources. Sorry for the wall of text and BLOG type thread. I'm mostly a lurker, but I love the ATOT community and come here everyday and I just needed to vent.
