So like the title says. Has anyone here ever gone skydiving?

I'm making my first jump this weekend as a gift from a friend for my birthday. I'm pretty excite but also nervous.

So share your experiences.

How nervous were you your first time? After talking about it I am a little less nervous but can imagine I will be going crazy in the plane ride up just before the jump.

Skydivers: Good 'til the last drop.

(shamelessly stolen from the sayings thread.)

Yes. MANY times, courtesy of Uncle Sam's Misguided Children.

Just remember, it's not the fall that kills you...it's the sudden stop...

Most likely, since it's your first jump, it will be a tandem jump...and you'll be attached to an experienced skydiver. Try not to shat yourself...it could be embarrassing...

I did a tandem jump, barely managed to not shit myself.

It was amazing & I shall never, ever do it again.

I tried to go parachuting but had a frightening experience.

I jumped out of the cessna, and while expecting a fall, I just hung there suspended midair. A helicopter had to come rescue me at 10k feet an hour later. When I jumped, I didn't fall because I was full of hot air, just like I am now.

What had you almost shatting yourself? Do you have a fear of heights? You say it was amazing but you would never do it again...why not?

Sorry for all the questions just looking to get some insight.

Oh...the "self-ballooning experience."

I thought that only happened to politicians.

I'm generally somewhat afraid of heights, but for the most part skydiving doesn't give you the sense of "height" that, say, a tall building does or whatever. I'd never go bungee jumping. But I'm not really afraid of flying in a plane, and skydiving was more like that. Except that you then jump out of the plane.

Anyway, yeah, I was pretty nervous at a couple points. First when we take off and are in the air for awhile, then they open the side door, since even if you're used to flying, it's generally while you're enclosed. There were four jumps going on (all tandem, so eight people jumping), and I was the second one to go. I think the worst part was when the first guy went, and I saw him sitting on the side of the plane and then suddenly disappear. It's like "that's going to be me in a second".

Anyway, doing it tandem was nice since I didn't have to be the one to push off the edge. There's really only a split-second of the "falling" sensation, then it doesn't really feel like anything, either in free-fall or once the parachute opens. Once I was out of the plane I wasn't scared at all. I was taller than the instructor guy, so we had a bit of trouble getting into a good landing position; I more or less ended up in a sitting position and landing on my ass, but it was still a very smooth landing.

It was really awesome, though that's the only time I've been. Hope you have a good time.

I have never been so sure that I would die for so long. You're hurtling towards the ground around 180 mph, and shit can break, go wrong...

Felt the same (nervous) but I was determined, it was INCREDIBLE! I bought another ticket to go sometime in the next year since it was cheap(er).

Here is how it is supposed to go:

1. Put on jumpsuit/goggles
2. Get on plane
3. Get strapped into tandem person
4. Wait till the give you the thumbs up to jump
5. Wave to your camera person that jumps with you (a must)
6. Jump out the plane
7. Make funny faces while free-falling
8. Your tandem guy looks at his big big faced watch and notices it time to pull the cord
9. Taps you to pull the cord, you are too busy making funny faces, so he pulls the cord.
10. Whooooosh
11. You are now slowly falling to the earth

Now here is how mine went after 9

10. Whoooosh
11. Still freefalling since the main chute didn't open and was tangled up since the tandem guy was a jackass and couldn't pack the chute correctly.
12. Making more funny faces except its not on camera
13. Whoooosh (again)
14. You are now slowly falling to the earth on the small rinky dink reserve shoot

All in all, I theoretically got a "two for one" jump special since I had two free falls, the whole point of jumping.

Went 2 years ago. Was a blast

Wasn't scared/worried/freaking out/etc at all until we got in the plane and started our ascent. The plane was a small little thing with duct tape and aluminum foil all over (turns out it's so gear doesn't get snagged on the interior). The ride up is about 10 minutes. Then around ~13,000 ft they open the door and that's when it hit me and I had my first "oh shit wtf am I doing" moment.

Stepdad and his tandem guy went first. Watched them just fall away from the plane. Then, it's to us, and I put my right foot out on the landing gear. Duck down so we can get our torsos/heads out the door, then realize we just start falling and I see the plane start to fall away from me. I remember trying to yell out "OH FUCK!!!!!!!!", but the wind noise drowned out any of it. Then after a few seconds the sheer awesomeness of it took over, and was just in a pure adreneline rush. Was one of the best times of my life. Can't wait to go again.

Did it once about 10 years ago. Had a lot of fun, but I sprained my ankle on the landing.

I wanted to until a friend lost a friend in a skydiving accident. I actually had nightmares after just hearing the story

Did it earlier this year. Was nervous until I actually got there and filled out all the paperwork. After that it was just a wave of calm that washed everything away. On the video, I definitely had the "Oh, shit!" face right before jumping out. My one regret is listening to them tell me to make stupid faces and wave at the camera. I think it's more of a tactic to take your focus off of the fact that you're free falling in the middle of the sky. In hindsight, I would've enjoyed it a lot more if I had just enjoyed the view because it's not something you do everyday.

I'll have to admit, it's kind of comical how your tandem guy will just keep barking orders at you after he pulls the cord to distract you from looking down. I actually had to turn to him and say "Look, I'm not freaking out, calm down."

I had a lot of static line jumps out of both fixed wing aircraft and helicopters while I was in the Army. Nothing like you will experience, as in this type of military parachuting you get a very short free fall sensation before your chute is pulled out and then you are busy checking your canopy for damage, looking around at where everyone else is that came out with you and then scoping out where you are going to land.

With most training jumps at around 1,300 feet and operational jumps at 800 - 900 feet there isn't much time to enjoy the view, but it is nice and peaceful floating around at a higher altitude if you are just practicing.

I used to like twisting myself around a bit immediately after exiting the aircraft to watch the troops jumping out after me. The parachute deployment on MC1-1B chutes is a little rough on the neck if the risers snap against it, though.

Most of my jumps were at night. With a full moon and a clear sky it is a unique experience. As is landing in trees and into water. Avoid those if possible.

Never had a tandem jump, but wouldn't mind trying it if the instructor were female and gorgeous and we could have drinks afterward.

You can get some very good detail on parachuting here -

The Drop Zone

My advice: Deploy the parachute when the people on the ground look like ants, not when the ants look like people...
