Anyone ever had to take sexual harassment training at work?

Supv came to me and asked me if I know of an incident that involved a lesbian coworker in our department. I asked him to explain and he tells me a story where a post-it note was left attached to her monitor.

"What do you call a lesbian dinosaur? Licksalotofpuss"

The woman was offended and went to our director. We tried to figure out who it is but no luck. We have camera footage of our work areas but none have the proper angle to see if anyone left the note in the area where she found it.

I have my own suspicions of who did it, but again, without evidence I can't do anything about it. So this all culminates in the announcement that corporate HR is sending our way a series of videos and material we have to watch, worksheets to complete & hand in and meetings to participate in.

This is not even the first time this has happened with this one particular woman. 2 guys here offended her in her first week of employment because they felt the need to have a "candid discussion" about lesbianism with her and how they feel it is against their bibilical beliefs. Frickin bible thumpers who feel the need to open their mouth. These 2 guys were written up and I was releived nothing resulted from this. Months later here we are again with this note...

Awesome, because I dont have enough work already to divert time to this bullshit. What ever happened to people being professional at the workplace? I have a myriad of opinions and jokes that are guaranteed to offend many people but I keep that kind of crap to myself or maybe share with coworkers who are like minded that are trustworthy. My paycheck is far too important to lose my job over a joke, my opinion on lesbians or any controversial topic.

So what do I have to expect from this "training"?

I already know how to sexually harass women so I don't see why I would ever have to take a class for it.

But then again, sexual harassment is just known as 'flirting' if you happen to be attractive.

OP, there's like a solid 30 minutes on what is defined as "unwanted sexual advances".

I've done Navy sexual harassment at least a dozen times.

It seems stupid and then stuff like what the OP posts happens and you realize there are a lot of stupid people that need to be fired out there.

You'll likely learn the difference between sexual harassment and sexual assault and what behavior is appropriate.

This. I did one every like 3 months it seemed like in the military.

A lot of it covers some situations people may it know are harassment.

Everybody where I work had to do an online coarse. You could just blow through it though and skip right to the exam. Most of the questions where on the level of

Lisa is wearing a tight pants today should you

A. grab Lisa's ass
B. not grab Lisa's ass

So it was pretty easy to get a passing grade and get on with your day.

Had to do them yearly at a company I used to work for. They got progressively more vague about what could be harassment. The last video we had to watch listed "Hi Susan. You look nice today" as something that could be considered sexual harassment.

I really wish I was joking

The following company was involved in manufacturing. Talk about extremes

Been there, done that.

Keep your head down, or even if you are an engineer or close the 23 year old little girls in HR hired on their looks can make a major issue over a casual comment behind your back.

Or perhaps given an opportunity to learn more appropriate workplace behavior through remedial training like what the OP has headed his way. For most people, this kind of training seems obvious and silly. It's always a bit shocking to realize that for some people, it is a revelation.

To the OP, it's hardly surprising that upper management sees the need to take some sort of positive step in response to the incident. Taking no action could later be interpreted as tacit acceptance of a hostile work environment should the situation later deteriorate into a court case.

Take some comfort in the fact that you'll be finished after watching the videos. It's your supervisor that's going to be under continuing pressure to really resolve the problems in your group.

Be thankful you are the recipient and not the poor schmuck who has to give the training. Every month. To a new class of snickering wankers. Who ask stupid hypothetical questions about Lisa's pants.

Annually when I worked retail. It's not so much "don't bang your coworkers" as it is "don't bang your coworkers without permission, and don't be an asshole about it if they say no."

Pretty much this.

If what you're about to say or do could possibly make anyone uncomfortable in any way you probably shouldn't say or do it.

FTR-The two idiots who are causing this at the OP's company should be fired. Their actions are opening the company up to a lawsuit.

It's better to deal with BS timewaster class than to be in the position of the woman who had been harassed.

It's all about limiting the possible liability of the company. Sexual harassment lawsuits are expensive, so they will waste time, and even miss some deadlines in order to NOT get sued.

Anyhow, some of your work won't get done in time, it will just have to be late, hopefully you are able to get all the critical/emergency/high priority stuff done in time, and can take afford to take the hit with the rest.

Otherwise, it sounds like the place you work maybe needs to hire more people?
