Anyone ever have random jaw pain?

First, I am already working on getting a doctor/dentist appointment, but I've been traveling a bit lately so its been hard.

anyway, I've had a weird jaw pain lately, was wondering if anyone else has experienced the same thing or has any idea what it might be.

It came out of nowhere as far as I can remember, no injury or anything. It is a pain in the right side of my jaw, only when I bite down hard/chew, and it hurts more if I shift my jaw towards the back of my head. It doesn't hurt when I open my mouth. It doesn't hurt if I push on my jaw with my hand, neither does it hurt if I push down on my teeth with my hand with my mouth open.

Anyone have any idea of what I might be expecting when I get to the dentist/doctor? I don't grind my teeth at night or anything. The pain kind of settles down at times, but only for short periods. the pain isn't too bad it is just really aggravating and annoying. On a side note, I have been having headaches lately too, which is rare for me. Also some pretty bad pain in my shoulder last night, but I am 99% sure that is definitely unrelated, and is gone now.

I have this same exact issue, including the increased headaches. For me, the dentist says its wisdom teeth and they need to be removed. 1 is infected and another is on the verge. But I don't actually have any tooth pain, just feels like it's radiating through my jaw.

right, no tooth pain, but jaw. could be near my gums I suppose but not sure.

and again, only one side. however, I already got my wisdom teeth removed at least a year ago, maybe 2

I'm actually seeing the dentist tomorrow night to see if they will extract the teeth while I'm pregnant. So I'm going to ask him about TMJ.

Can't you wait until after your baby is born? The fewer chemicals/drugs in your system the better while pregnant. This includes painting the baby's bedroom.

another thing, I took some aspirin last night and I don't think it helped. that wiki article did mention the nerves not responding well to some pain medication

I had literally the exact same 'symptoms', I believe it was my wisdom teeth. They are fully out (or at least it seems) but maybe they were not as far as they 'needed' to be. I had those pains for about 3 days then it went away. How long has it been for you?

Considering that I was having pain like that a few weeks ago, then a crown fell off and the dentist discovered that the tooth was absessed. Had to have "another" root canal on the tooth (didn't even know that was possible).

Yep, I am thinking the OP has an abscessed tooth too. A dying nerve is some of the worst pain going, and the pain definitely migrates to the jaw.

wouldn't the pain be more near the tooth though? also, like i mentioned, i bite down no problem it just hurts when my mouth is totally closed. i'm no doctor though

nope. the pain can "refer" to other areas actually. i've had patients point to the tooth, the area where they felt the pain was coming from, and taken an x-ray there only to find out the offending tooth was far forward or far behind the area they were pointing to. Sometimes the problematic tooth can be on the top and still the pain will refer to the bottom jaw.

so you don't feel any pain in any teeth? no sensitivity to hot/cold? any teeth nearby with large fillings?

no pain in any teeth. no sensitive to hold/cold. pain is worse when i shift my jaw backwards, but the pain is still very barable, not bad at all, but just irritating.

not really sure what teeth the pain is near, but i don't think I have any unusually large fillings or anything like that, i'm only 22 and haven't had any procedures past fillings/wisdom teeth out

I don't get it, which is it? First you said there is pain only when you bite down hard/chew and now you say there is "no pain in any teeth".

the pain is in my jaw, but it only hurts when i bite down. if i shift my jaw back a bit and close my mouth, it starts to hurt just a tiny bit BEFORE my teeth touch and my mouth fully closes. hurts more when it fully closes

I get that too, it's TMJ for me, just try not to chew any taffy for a few days and it will go.

I've got jaw pain on my right side right now, but it's whenever I open my mouth, or move my jaw left to right.
