Why is the OP's question called "throwing it all away"? Doing that sounds like a damn fine idea to me, and not throwing a damn thing away...except traffic, high bills, insane pressure to perform, etc.

Sounds awesome.

i don't think the material things are what he's talking about. i know its not what i'm talking about.

i just think we're sick of the life we live and want osmething different or better.

i hate coming to work and sitting in cubicle all day or walking around a dirty, hot, smelly factory fixing soot covered PCs (all of which have no windows). I don't like my job at all.
if i don't work, i can't do any of the very few things i do get to do or enjoy. If i don't work, i don't get the things i need to survive like food, clothes, and home. I don't get to keep the car i have so i CAN go places.

i'm sure if i had a job i enjoyed, it would be a lot different, but i don't.

you are fantasicing about a place that doesn't exist. So, you are sick of your current problems. I am sure you can live a 'laid back' life here, you just chose not too

Sometimes I daydream that place does exist around Fiji.

I'd love to go somewhere where I don't feel like I'm surrounded by toxins all the time. So much of what we are exposed to every day can leach toxic chemicals into the air. Laundry detergents have flourescent dyes in them that remain on clothing after washing to trick us into thinking that the clothing is really clean because it looks brighter. Dishsoap has coloring in it for god's sake. Who the hell needs color in something whose sole purpose is to remove dirt? PVC can leach toxic phthalates. Teflon produces toxic fumes at high temperatures. Particle board contains formaldehyde which can leach into the air for a few years. Air fresheners and cleaning solutions can cause breathing problems from chronic exposure.
So many toxic substances created by corporations that place profit over public health. Disgusting, but also aggravating that this society has become so dependent on this toxic lifestyle.

Yeah, just today in fact.

I've love to just go live on a Greek island and forget about this BS industrialized world we live in.

Edit: And I like my job. Make decent money. Have a GF. It's all the hussle-and-bussle, the politics, and traffic, the technology overload. Life has become so damned artificial, unsincere, indirect. Life is about meeting people, affecting people, learning from people...and I believe all this rif-raff we have only interferes with that.

The trouble is of course, if you make such a decision between the ages of 25 and 45, you can't go back. That's because those 20 years is when you'll make most of your income. So why not work hard now, save, then escape at 45? You'd still have 30-40 years to soak up that location with the confidence of savings somewhere. But if you lose those income-producing years, you're fvcked either way.

As a surfer I dream of it everyday. Try watching September Sessions, thicker than water or 2nd thoughts. Something about walking on water, going super fast and all without the use of a motor.

If I ever hit the lotto that's what'd I do.

I remember sitting down at one of those small drink huts on the Virgin Islands, thinking to myself, this would be a hell of a gig to have. Especially if it covered your cost of living.

BTW, we must be on the same plane of thinking at the moment. I started a thread asking the same question yesterday

one of the benefits of working for yourself! pride and enjoyment in your work and unlimited vacations. I'm going to go that route absolutely.

Successful businesses rarely allow for unlimited vacations. Thats a surefire way to have your business fail in the startup phase.

If you make 60k selling widgets on ebay the first 6 months of the year the next 4 can be spent sitting on the beach if you like. That was my point. Obviously this isnt the case if you are in certain industries.

Ive done almost exactly what you said, only I spent the 4 months reading book and playing video games. You have no idea what a relief and how great the 4 month vacation was, but after that, it was impossible to get back into the 6 months that made those 4 possible.

Because I enjoyed the time off, and I enjoyed working for myself, but what I didnt enjoy was the baggage that came along with working for yourself. Its NOT all fun and games.

It is incredibly hard to take a 4 month vacation, and then go back to doing something you don't like. Business is never as cut and dry as the successful make it sound - they leave out all the irritating parts. Dealing with idiots, dealing with scammers, etc - when you've worked your ass off making bank for a week, only to have one asshole take it all away from you because he used a fake CC, you'll know what anger is. When the money from *your own pocket* gets involved, its very, very hard not to take it personally and get extremely stressed out.

You take a 4 month vacation because you NEED a 4 month vacation after all of that sh*t.

No matter what route you take, there will be the good, and there will be the bad. The only way to avoid all of those headaches, working for yourself while still keeping modern conveniences, is to win the lottery.

If it's so easy to sustain yourself and have a relaxing lifestyle in one of these utopian places then why are Mexicans jumping the border by the millions?

This is a serious question, and I'd like to hear your thoughts...

Because mexicans are confused people. They have beautiful beaches in their backyard, a fantastic culture, and more than enough to live meaningful lives. But theyre so confused, and take all that for granted, that they've lost sight of this, and want to jump the border to get a hold of the meaningless wealth that us americans take for granted.

In reality, those mexicans are probably better off than most of us. Who else is going to think that a toilet that is more than a hole in the ground and actually flushes is the most fantastic thing ever? They are born into nothing, and all the little things that we take for granted (like clean water) are great new things to them - they are rich with the same amount of money that most of us consider poverty.

Not exactly in one location "on the beach" as you put it....but I've thought about dropping everything and traveling the world and visiting all of my favorite locations. What's stopping me?....I have calculated that I would run out of money very quickly, despite this fact I still 'dream' of the idea a few times a week. Basically I need more money to make it happen......so I've either got to figure a way of earning money at a much higher rate then I am doing so now, or meet someone else who shares this interest and wants to 'sponsor' the the whole thing.
