At my last job I began to notice that the tasks I was being assigned didn't exactly line up with my expectations. I was then told "you were hired to do the shit no one else wants to do." Oh... thanks.
The company was full of stuffy, workaholic "alpha-nerds." My boss had mega-ADHD and couldn't sit still for more than 30 seconds to talk to me. He'd say what he wanted then immediately start to walk away as I would respond. Even when I wasn't on call, it was expected that I answer my cell phone immediately! If I didn't, I would get a curt voicemail reminding me (they would call just to test people sometimes).
After only a month I was trying to go back to my old job, but they had entered a hiring freeze. Since I lived in a smaller town, there were few job opportunities (mid 2009).
I knowingly gave a half assed effort and didn't care. The job made me depressed and I dreamed of quitting every day.
When I was finally laid off, along with 100 other people, the CIO offered to take me back to my desk to clean it out.
"No need!" I said. "It's been cleaned out for months!"
I'm happy I went through the experience because it spurned me to get my VCP certification which enabled me to land the job I have today.
