I don't jump from perfectly good airplanes.

Even if one engine was on fire I'd be tempted to ride it down...

Well I have personally never gone sky diving, but my brother has and his words were, "It was fun but I would've enjoyed it more if it didn't cost so much and if it lasted longer."

....But its jumping out of a plane over 10,000 feet in the air!

Im sure it'd cost 1/2 the $180 to pay for the gas.. then for the lesson and the instructor's time spent with you.. i think its worth it.

Then you inch closer and closer until you're sitting in the door with your legs dangling out and you totally have no idea why you're doing this. A quick push from your TI and you're out and you totally remember why you're doing this. ~60 some odd seconds later (will only feel like 15 for you) and you're under a ginormous canopy floating back to the ground. Ask your TI to do some 360's, see if he'll let you play with the toggles and don't forget to scream!

Which dropzone are you going to?

I've had 5 tandem jumps in the last three years and enjoyed every one of them immensely! I won't bother to explain teh experience of it all as jorken's post absolutely hits the nail on its proverbial head.

The DZ (dropzone) I've always gone to is Sky Dive San Marcos.

I jumped last summer at SkyDive Dallas. I paid $309 for a solo jump. It was definitely worth the money, and if I had more of it, I would have continued through the summer to get my license. My jump was from 13,500 feet and pulled the chute at 5,000. It was a little more than a minute free fall which was awesome. I'll go again in the future.

When I did my tandem jump, it was out of an old rickety Cessna 152 I believe that had just one seat for the pilot and was stuffed full with 5 people sitting on the ground. The windows were held shut with little metal ties that hold loaves of bread together...haha....And the pilot was wearing a parachute so I was ready to get outta there when they opened the door.

I learned to do this when I was in the Marines. Did it on a fairly regular basis, but I gotta tell ya...it never made sense to jump out of a perfectly good aircraft..
I HAVE NOT done it since I got out...and have no plans to do so either.

In 2001, I worked on a construction job right next to the Lodi Parachute Center...IIRC, we watched 3 people die...It's pretty eerie watching someone fall from 13,000 feet...one almost made it...the chute failed to open right, and they spiraled into the vineyard...Several other accidents that didn't kill the jumper, some "walked away", others survived, but were seriously injured.
Nationwide, the death rate from this sport is very low, but it's also one where a slight mishap can kill you, as compared to other sports, where a sprained ankle or broken leg is the worst you can expect...
