Why wouldn't you buy from any of those companies?

In general I avoid buying things that are Made in China when I can. And given the choice, I would not knowingly support a Chinese-based company. Period.

State backed
Unfair competition due to said backing
Shoddy quality most of the time
Copycat design

Take your pick.

Practically everything is made in China. Are Samsung phones really all assembled in Korea?

when i had note 2, s3 and s4, they were all made in Korea. Same with my Nexus 5. i would say a good number of them are, though not all. I also use HTC One M8, which is made in Taiwan.

Rather than using a commonly used idiom with no actual focus or subject, what, pray tell, should I broaden my horizon on?

Nevermind. I found my answer.

Yup, been here for 4 years and thought similarly to yourself before coming here. What horizon should your broaden?

Well, avoiding Chinese produced goods is impossible, so imposing a personal ban on these phones is idiotic.

I have no idea if Oppo or Oneplus is state backed, but yet again... Samsung and LG are backed, so not just a Chinese thing.

Shoddy quality? Another ignorant and idiotic statement. There IS some, but there is also good stuff. Don't put everything in the same category because of an ignorant bias.

Copycat design? Sure, in the past Chinese companies have had little to no design input of their own.. but look at the phone(s) we are talking about in this thread and tell me where they copied anyone in design. In fact, I'll say that Oppo's design of the Find 7 will be the one to copy for the next year as it is the best looking phone on the market, imo.

Current China is not the China of the past. These companies are targeting a foreign market and are not throwing the infamous Chinese knock-offs into that mix. There's no use of even discussing that market, as that is not the topic of this thread. This thread is about a high-end device priced in the mid-end category and that has been well received by anyone that has touched one.

Thank you for you opinion on the matter. However, you should realize, I have also worked there for 2 years. And nothing in that time served to change my opinion of China and the product that China makes, and your opinion, while, is an interesting read, doesn't inform me of what I don't already know, and is unlikely to change my opinion. While my opinion is my own, I am not forcing it on other people, you asked me why, and I answered. Perhaps you should also keep your opinions to yourself and not force it on others?

That being said. I am done with the discussion, and I feel it doesn't add to the topic on hand. And I will ignore further posts about the matter.

I'm so happy I have a Note 3 right now. Because if I didn't, I'd really really want to buy this phone. And I'd probably be frustrated by the very limited supply, the hoops, and invitation system.

Invitations systems rub me the wrong way for some reason. Just feels very snobbish. I need to do crazy stuff, get super obsessed and prove my undying loyalty, for the privilege to buy your product?

How about you launch pre-orders on your gimp web server, let half the world hammer it and crash it for a few hours and declare the random few that miraculously get an order through while cursing your name at the monitor to be the winners, while the losers outrage their fury at your complete incompetence and suggest something about every employee in the company dying in a fire.

This is how we did it in my day. And damn it, it was a good system.

Is it stupid I'm ditching work to go to the OnePlus One CyanogenMod event in San Francisco tomorrow? Oh wait, maybe my coworkers are monitoring this :hmm:

and probably a nightmare trying to catch up with all the recent escalations. 2 more hours before I have to hop on the train, but we'll see if it even makes sense.

Will try to snap a few photos and give my best analysis. Forgot my S95, but hope my iPhone will do. Press Club can be dark in a few areas.

I'm looking forward to your opinion of the screen and the general feel of the phone.

I'd be surprised if it felt anything but good and had a very good screen. Oppo has been doing good stuff recently.

However, I don't expect anything new that hasn't already been seen - so there's nothing to learn about. What makes the phone special is the price, not the hardware or software.

Without thorough testing, there's not that much else to know for me.

I want to know actual battery life, call quality, speaker quality and wireless quality for instance.

Frankly, the 1+1 is too big for me (not too big in general, just for me) but it's something I can learn to live with if it had a 3 day battery somehow.

Ok, here are a few scribbled thoughts. Not sure if you guys need more photos anyway because 1) I took them with my iPhone, 2) there were a lot of blogs there. Phandroid, The Verge, Android Police were there.

So regarding the screen I found the screen to be vibrant and beautiful. It might be the dim environment giving extra contrast, but I found the colors to be magnificent. I've always felt the Nexus 4 to be extremely washed out and even the Nexus 5 a little too (until you calibrate it to Gamma 2.2). But next to my iPhone 5, Nexus 5, and some other dude's HTC One, I found the screen of the OnePlus One to be beautiful. We'll need Anand or someone with an objective colorimeter to give the final verdict, but I can tell my eyes were pleased.

As for the size, you guys may know me here as someone to champion smaller screens, and yeah this phone is huge, but it's just gorgeous. It's well built, with minimal bezels, and a great ergonomic feel to the curved back. Like in many ways I almost ignored the size concern. I wouldn't say it's too big, but at the same time I wasn't really testing it out for size. I never got the impression that the phone was omg large. The Galaxy Note tends to give me that impression though.

The general feel felt great. I like the premium build and the recessed bezels.

Several other notes:

  • I love the double tap to wake as well as the gesture wake (circle for camera, V for torch)
  • The capacitive buttons were very dim. Not sure why that is. I almost couldn't see them. But i mainly used onscreen buttons, and that's how I'd see myself using the phone given the capacitive button layout is not the standard Android layout.
  • The camera burst mode wasn't particularly amazing. Maybe 3-4 fps shooting. That should translate to a faster HDR than the Nexus 5, but I was hoping for something faster.
  • Still the HDR concern is probably lessened given that I found the camera to be extremely good in low light. Far better than my iPhone and Nexus 5. On the Nexus 5, I found it more necessary to use HDR mode to get a good photo (and when I did, it was great), but I'd rather not use a slow shooting mode to capture normal images.
  • While they did emphasize the stereo speakers, I found it to be be tinny/not that great for rich sound. This was purely based on moving the volume slider. I felt as I raised the volume to near max, I thought I could hear the speaker nearly crackle. Of course, I didn't test enough and it was a noisy environment.
As a drooling fanboy, I approached Pete Lau and Carl Pei and shook their hands, telling them I watched the keynote live and I will be in China next week. From some Google fu, it looks like their office is within 10 minutes of my hotel in Shenzhen, so we'll see if I can drop by.

Apologies for not doing a real serious thorough apples to apples comparison.

Looks like a decent phone. I've had double tap to wake on my m7 for a while though. If I wasn't on Verizon I would definitely buy one.

dt2w is possible on a Nexus 5 as well except the battery drain is definitely noticeable. I think on a properly implemented phone like the M8 or even the M7, the drain is probably minimal.

I forgot about the always on listening, but I didn't get it working. I didn't explore too much about the phone simply because it was CyanogenMod which I already run on my phone.

Yea on my m7 my kernel guys have made battery life awesome with these features. I'm not a fan of CM but I'm sure you can throw a pure aosp Rom on this phone once it gets out there for development. These are the kind of prices people want to pay for what the phone offers. I was worried about the screen but I'm glad it's great.

Holy shit that's huge (that's what she...)! That picture just about single-handedly eliminates the phone from contention. Seeing dimension sketches was one thing...live shots next to an N5 is another.

Thanks.
