Actually that's the point.

There are currently 100 phones that they are doing for giveaway. (Smash your phone). At the end of June, 16 GB will be release for people who hold invites ONLY. At the end of July, 64GB will be released for people who hold invites ONLY. No word on general availability without invites.

So meh.

Updated on invites:

http://forums.oneplus.net/threads/the-oneplus-invite-system-updated-may-9.1150/

Update 3 (May 9, 2014): There are a few commonly asked questions regarding the invite system that I can help clear up:

How do I get an invite?
The main method of getting invites will be through others. In the beginning, when not a lot of other people have the device, you'll be able to get invites through contest and raffles. We have planned ways so our early fans, as well as people who weren't here from the beginning will be able to obtain invites.

When do the next batch of invites roll out?
The first real batch of invites roll out late May, and will be of the 64GB Sandstone Black version. Any invites that you might have been promised before this, will be sent during this time.

How long are invites valid for?
For invites that you receive, they are typically valid for 24 hours. If they expire, they get returned to sender so someone else can get a chance to buy it. Alternatively, you can ask for the sender to resend it to you. For invites that you can give away, they are usually valid for longer, usually 1-2 weeks.

How many invites can I give away?
This varies. In the beginning, the quantities will be smaller, but increased as time goes by. You will frequently receive new invites to give away as production ramps up.

When do I receive invites to give away?
You do not automatically receive invites when you purchase a phone. We will need to manually roll them out according to our operations situation.

I bet the invites are because they can only make a really tiny number of phones possibly for a long time

I just got turned on to this phone. Pretty much exactly what I've been looking for. Only drawback is lack of expandable storage. My current phone contract doesn't expire until October so I would expect better availability by then.

Why would you have to wait till then? Are you planning on changing carriers or something? You can buy this phone for $350 in the middle of your contract without an issue and you just put your current sim in your new phone. Even if it's not the same sim size, you can tell your carrier you need a new sim card and they'll give you the right one. Your contract will still be in place until october.

Finances my friend. I'm going to save up for the new phone and keep using my iPhone in the mean time.

Phone market is long overdue for a shaking up. It's ridiculous that a 7" tablet costs $200 but a similar spec superphone costs $600. Maybe on iOS I could see why that would be the case since there is a sole supplier, but on Android side, it's ripe for disruption. Glad OnePlus is taking a shot at it.

Where are you getting those dates from?

Our production schedule is as follows:

  • Ready now - 100 for phone smashers
  • Mid to late May - Larger batch 16GB Silk White for the first batch of invites
  • Late May to early June - Larger batch 64GB Sandstone Black
  • Later in June - Increased general availability, people who want it should be able to get an invite without much trouble in June
Update May 6: After seeing how popular the 64GB version was compared to the 16GB, we have pushed back the production of the 16GB Silk White in favor of getting the 64GB Sandstone Black out quicker.

Over the last few days I've been thinking that is this phone really that important to me? If an S5 GPE does come out I might be ok with that too. After all, what's attractive about this phone is just the hardware. The S5 should be almost just as attractive with a slightly less sexy build. I'm sure the S5 can handle CM no problem. I saw the S4 do just fine with minimal hiccups (similar to Nexus).

I'm a little turned off by the battery and camera disappointments with the preliminary reviews of the OnePlus. Sure software can always be tuned, but that's what we always said about the Nexus too. There's only so much resources that team can dedicate to fixing bugs.

~$300 savings is important to me, and that's the primary reason why I'm getting this phone. If I felt like spending over $600 then I would get an LG G3, but I'm done spending that much on phones so HTC, Samsung, LG and the others are no longer considerations for me.

What battery disappointments?

Don't they need to hurry? The draw right now is it has absolute flagship specs at half the price. But the G3 and the rumored S5 Prime and M8 Prime are around the corner with 1440p screens which would push the OnePlus to high end, but no longer top of the line.

I know it's a fine point, but the value proposition of the phone will slowly decrease over the next couple months and will become a upper mid-range phone in Sept when the Note 4 comes out with a 1440p screen, S805 and whatever is new in the fall.

Well, the same thing happens to the Nexus. It's still a legit option, though, near-flagship for half the price. And the next big jump won't be until ARMv8.

I am curious where the next Nexus will fall. Are they shooting for 1440p? And will this time Google make it a true flagship? It's all unclear at the moment.

Invitees get to send new invites too, right?

Not that I want one, but there are a bunch of people on the forum here who've been salivating for this...

I'm not too sure. I only have 1 and I bought mine. I'll keep you guys in mind after I give one to my buddy. This is assuming I'm supposed to get more.

I think you are, but they said they'd deal them out at a later date as orders get fulfilled. Just keep an eye out and I'm sure they'll warn you when you get invites.

Not excited simply due to the large screen. I have big hands but still don't like phones larger than 5.2 inches for daily use.

I know what you mean. But with all the outrage on the forums and people with member IDs of sub 900 complaining that they haven't gotten jack crap, I think it'll be a while before they roll out 2nd invites.

I'm pretty sure I got my invite not because of my member ID (2006), but because I visited the OnePlus office and begged them for one.

lol, I guess that works then

Did you have to give any *ahem* "favors" while you were there to get your invite?

What is your member # and are you listed as a "well-known member". All the chatter was that OnePlus was going to start dishing out invites to longer term members after Contest winners but I have not received anything yet.

I'm member #1533 under the same user ID as here.

Please report back with your thoughts on the phone and specifically signal strength and camera performance. Both have been areas where some users/reviewers have pointed out some issues.

Thanks, Bill

I'm 2006. I'm only an Active member, but like I said, I went to their office, which was why I probably got put on a priority list.

I got the phone on Monday but was out for work. Had about an hour just now to play with it. I put the screen protector on, although I hate plastic, so I'll wait til my glass ones gets here before I use this as my daily driver.

I can't figure out how to get Voice wake to work. Maybe I should read some reviews to see if they have it working yet. When Carl showed me the phone in Shenzhen it had a beta build with Hey Snapdragon, but it failed to work when we tried it. We did get to train it though.

Color calibration is a bit off in my early gamma tests, but overall its not bad.

The build is premium. Very solid. Feels far better than the Nexus 4 and 5.

Edit: Very quick signal check. Its not great. I'm hovering at like -106 to -109 dBm, which is 1 bar. But I get about the same on my Nexus 5.

Few more thoughts:

  • I like the vibration motor (TWSS). Its got a quick sharp vibrate like Samsung phones that I like. The LG Nexus phones always had a soft drawn out vibrate that felt cheap.
  • The LED is one sharp dot which feels nice. It's not a ghetto blur like on the Nexus 4 and 5 that make it look cheap. I've always liked the dot on the Moto phones. They did a good job.
