Anyone familiar with Singapore? What should I do while I am there?

Im going to Singapore, and have some family staying at the Grand Hyatt. That freaking place is $400+ a night. No way do I want to spend that. I am looking for a place close by that would be MUCH more reasonable for me. TIA

That's kinda steep, but not unexpected for a hotel on, or close to, Orchard Rd.

Are you sure you're getting the best deal? Last time I stayed at the Meridien, I was paying $150.

Whatever you do, DO NOT go for the cheap places near Little India/Serangoon Rd.

Thanks for the reply. I don't know where I was looking when I read over $400. Everywhere now says in the mid $200s. I was checking out the Royal Plaza, from what I can tell it is close to the Grand Hyatt, but $100 less per night at an avg of $156/night.

That price sounds about right.

Sometimes, you get cheaper prices near the airport, but those hotels aren't close to the main attractions in Singapore.

How many days are you spending in the city?

those 400+ per nite are in SGD, not USD.

strangely my corporate rate is not working on hyatt.com, their website doesn't seem to be functioning properly.

I usually pay close attention to that and could have sworn it was USD. Oh well, even at $250+ USD a night....I am not staying there.

I'm Singaporean... and in Singapore right now.

You're looking at the most expensive stretch in Singapore. It's along Orchard road, our main up market shopping area in the city.

On the other hand, Singapore room rates aren't really that expensive. The Ritz Carlton is 300+ SGD a night, and most of the other 5 star hotels are around that range. So I'm not sure where you got 400+ USD from. Unless that's like the price for a suite?

If indeed that is the price you face, perhaps you can consider checking out "Orchard Parade Hotel" or "Goodwood Park Hotel"

Goodwood is right next to Hyatt, while Orchard Parade is about 5 min walk away. Alternatively the Meritus Mandarin at Orchard Rd is also just across the road. They should all be around the 300 SGD range for a room.

Or how about letting us know your budget?

Oh and Royal Plaza is just across the road from Hyatt, and there's a overhead bridge with escalators in between.
So that might be good for you, if you're ok with those prices.

The Conrad is nice and pretty centrally located. Singapore is basically one big underground mall. Where they haven't built more stores, the subway system connects the malls (thats my wifes description from our last visit).

Misitry of Sound is fun as well as a number of clubs in the same area. Interesting crowd too, very mixed (met a amazing Tajikistan model there, a bit my tounge all night to not throw out my many Borat references, it was worth it )

Eating wise you have a pretty good mix but I tend to like alternating between nice places and hawker stands. There is a cool little group of restuarants over in Clarke Quay, mostly asian focussed (perfect for me) but enough you could probably stay there the entire trip. Found some good Italian restuarants as well (of all places) if you need some specific suggestions let me know.

Have fun!

Don't forget to try out some of the street food. It's cheap, safe (every street stall has a health inspection) and remarkably tasty.

That's probably something I shouldn't Google while at work, right?
