uhhh...1 bedroom 600 sq ft?

Yup. Something small for now. My wife is heading down first until I fix-up and sell our house in KC. Then we will be looking at houses after being there for a bit.

Can I suggest a condo out by Lake Travis? Easy access to the marina and great golf.

Cedar Park, just north (I believe). And from what I remember, a popular IMAX voice does Christmas readings at a local non-denom church. I guess that scores it some points.

Oh, let us know when you get settled in. I'll buy ya a

i would hardly consider manor, elgin, pflugerville, round rock, liberty hill, buda, cedar park, etc, as 'austin.'

but yes, the area from I35 east to 183 isn't the nicest part of town. but it isn't all that bad for a 'bad part of town.' there is some damn good tex mex and barbecue to be found over there.

As for non-texmex or non-bbq, I  Mr. Catfish, both locations. I believe the area around St. Johns and IH-35 had some prostitution issues last year.

I live in East Austin and it is the nicest place I have ever lived in Austin. I have a large house and my neighborhood kicks ass.

If you don't want to piss all of your money away, move to East Austin and you can easily get nicer accomodations for way less money.

I've only passed through Austin on my way out to South Dakota, but I suspect it gets pretty cold in the winter.

Scubasteve: Here in KC the "bad" areas kind of run in patches. There are several places where ghetto will be right next to really nice neighborhoods. Lots of places where good vs bad is a block for block basis (excluding the suburbs which is all bad) .

Is east Austin anything like this?

i don't know that there are any bees in the area.

the largest population of mexican bats in the world lives in a cave north of austin, though.

East Austin has some poor areas but most of it is mixed-race middle class (no wealthy housing). Most of East Austin's reputation comes from the fact that Blacks live here. Almost all of Austin's Black population lives in East Austin and Texans tend to not like living near Blacks.

1)artsy area is south congress... south of the river and south of downtown ...called SoCo by the hip people.. lots of culture and things down on south congress drive
that area is very in demand and very expensive

2)thus... many people are moving into Eastside (east of the i35 freeway)... it used to be minority dominated, but is currently going gentrification by young and artsy people ..very safe. prices are relatively low but getting higher and higher quickly... jump on it NOW if you can

hyde park is too close to campus.. too expensive.. too many students... Eastside on the north (around 50th street) is a little "nicer" aesthetically than directly east of campus... thats a really really really good area to look at

I think that the housing has been pretty well covered, so on to jobs... You should subscribe to the relevant user group lists (adnug.org, austinjug.org, austin.pm.org, etc) as well as checking local resources (www.geekaustin.net, craigslist, etc). The job market is healthy; IME, nobody cares whether or not you're local as long as they're not paying for relocation.

there are a lot of nice apartment complexes along 360 there. maybe not that cheap though.

but it's not particularly close to fry's.

austin kicks ass, plan on moving back there at some point in my life. maybe a badass house on the lake once i am filthy rich.

ummm, just stay west of 35 and you should be mostly ok. though there are also some poorer areas further south in austin too. UT is awesome, but if you want some peace i wouldnt live very close to campus

600$ rent is easily doable... lots of apartments around oltorf area (major exit off 35 , south of campus) for cheap. beware, traffic is horrible

I found a studio off of Beescave about 5 miles from where I might work for $490.

More then reasonable.
