Im about to take a job in El Segundo by LAX. Im curious how bad is that traffic/commute in the morning going southbound from Santa Clarita/San fernando valley, and back. My hours would likely be 6:30 or 7 to 4/4:30?

Is it bumper to bumper every morning and afternoon? or only when there are accidents?

Buy a motorcycle as soon as you get to Cali..

oh the horror

I'm in the valley and have skipped applying for jobs just because of the commute up and down the 405, it's the absolute worst

All those places have gone in the gutter. If you're looking for cheap sure go there but I would never want to live in those places.
Well, that's just not true... maybe Carson, but Torrance is very family-oriented in many areas and Gardena is up-and-coming with all the Asians moving in.

The Honda and Toyota national headquarters are in Torrance, and I think that that's helping to maintain the Japanese population. The bigger factor is the Koreans; they own most of the business on the Redondo Beach Pier, and there's some good Korean food down this way. There's also a large Chinese population in the area with the aerospace and other engineering companies in the Southbay.

I wouldn't drive the SFV to El Segundo; that would totally suck, and it's not just because of the 405 (think 105 and 605 or 710). That said, I know people at work who do it. A lot of them come in at 4am and leave at 3PM.

I live 3 miles (16 traffic lights) from work, and I stay off the freeway. If I need to zip over to UCLA, KTown or Cal Tech during the daylight, I do it on a motorcycle.

There were times on the 405 when I felt like going full-on Michael Douglas in "Falling Down."

I lived in a really ghetto area between the San Fernando Valley and the Conejo Valley called Agoura Hills (). I worked a field sales job and my best accounts were UCLA and Cedars Sinai hospital, so I came to be intimately familiar with the special joy that is following bumper-to-bumper traffic all the way from Calabasas to Westwood, on both the 101 and 405.

You could look up google maps and hit the traffic button around the times you want to know.

If it's red or a red dotted line it'll be bumper to bumper most likely.

google maps traffic updates suck. Try the local state / Dept. of Highway & traffic website first

Sigalert.com is pretty good.

+1 for sigalert.com

although i dont have much of a choice for my commute home, so its pretty much just a warning meter that goes between "commute will suck" to "it'd be faster to walk 19 miles"

I drive from the 101/170 area to the 405/Olympic Blvd. area and it takes at least 40 minutes (a lot more when it rains)

Your commute will be at least twice that because traffic is worse both North and South of my commute.

Load up on the podcasts and audiobooks.

I commute from orange county to ucla 4 days a week. I leave at 5am to avoid traffic and I can get there in 45 min. I just end up sleeping in my car until class/work starts. I leave around either 2pm or 7pm. If you even jump on the freeway at 7am or 4pm your life is fucked. My 45 min commute turns into a 3 hour commute at that time. When I'm stuck in traffic I lurk atot lol

Btw you should definately try to find someone to carpool with.

This reminds me of that You know you're from LA if . .. chain mails.
One of the ifs was "you know better than to be caught on the 405 at 4:05.

Just another voice to echo what everyone else has said, don't do it. Move closer if you at all can or you'll hate your life for at least 3-4 hours a day.

I live 6 blocks away from 405 off the Santa Monica Blvd exit. Luckily I'm still a student and don't have a regular commute to make (yet) but if I need to get anywhere, I basically can't do it between the hours of roughly 3-7pm. Not only is the freeway complete gridlock but all the surface streets adjacent to the freeway are virtually useless as well.

Man, being in the bay area for almost a year now makes me realize something - you guys don't know what you have down south, or how good you have it. But, I will not miss the commute and traffic.

OP, move to irvine.
