I use a Sharp 46" LCD and it's an awesome display for gaming.

A good friend of mine has a 50" LG plasma, and it's nice as well.

To say I prefer one or the other in terms of image quality, I really don't.

The one thing that's better about LCD is the lower power consumption. I highly recommend the Sharp Aquos lineup as they seem to have very low response times and good "black" performance.

Burn in is almost a non factor in new Plasma TV's.

I heard the same thing when I bought mine. It's true too if you don't mind running their anti-burn-in pattern every time you have a static image on the screen (i.e. sports, CNN, game HUD, Windows environment, etc.).

Is there some technology that came out in the last two years that eliminates the need to do that?

I was in the same position a few months ago. I went with a 40" Samsung LCD for one main reason: I didn't want to worry about forgetting to turn the display off when I wasn't actively using the computer. My gaming/HTPC is in use most of the time when we're home, and I like being able to just let the screen saver kick in and not worry about it while it's playing music, etc. Although my initial instinct was to get a plasma (my parents have a Panasonic and the picture quality is superb), I didn't want to worry about the heat/power consumption and potential screen burn. The black levels on my C630 are not bad (not great either), and I don't notice any ghosting... but I don't play much FPS. Sometimes when I'm watching movies, I wish I had a plasma, but overall I think I made the right purchase for my situation.

That's an anti-image-retention feature. You only have to run it if you actually see any image retention and it doesn't go away quickly on its own. It does nothing to prevent or mitigate burn-in. The only thing you can do to prevent burn-in is not have same image on the screen day and day out for years. In normal household usage the only burn-in you're likely to get on a plasma TV these days is from watching a lot of 4:3 formated programs. Enabling grey bars will help mitigate this.

God, so much misinformation about plasma's in this thread. I own one, and I've read every page of the plasma thread in avsforums. Permanet burn in on plasma's will not happen unless you leave the brigtness turned up above 90% and leave an image on the screen for days. I've left a 360 game on for hours over night after passing out, and it doesn't burn in. Almost every plasma now uses some sort of pixel shift, which moves the image to different pixels. What everything is thinking of burn in is temporary image retention caused by phosphor residue, which will go away after another image comes along to wipe it out, or the tv is turned off.

Power consumption was also very high. Using a Kill-O-Watt meter I measured over 300W from the wallplate. An LCD uses much less, especially when you consider you don't have to leave it on after gaming.

But that can be a plus. I heat my room in the winter with my plasma TV

Everyone says this, and while it is technically true Image Retention is just as bad. If you go from a really bright scene down to a dark scene, you can see the retained image. After a few seconds to minutes it will go away. I find it anoying. However, the color reproduction and contrast levels of the Plasma make it worth dealing with Image Retention (usually, at least).

Tweak says "LCD is newer technology, end of story! LCD is better then Plasma IMO"

Not true here IMO, I have been using a 32" Plasma for a year and LOVE it over a SONY LCD PERIOD. Better color and NO ghosting gaming.

Anyone have thoughts about Plama 600MHz refresh rate?

It's sort of a marketing gimmick. The phosphors have to constantly be lit up, and do so 600 times per second. But the actual display refresh rate on most plasmas is still 60Hz. So 10 phosphor refreshes per frame and 60 frames per second = 600Hz refresh rate if you're trying to confuse consumers and hijack terms..

But that does clue into the fact that plasmas have no pixel response time issues like LCD's.

Im in the same Dilemma, as stupid as this sounds. Im using a HP ZR30w and I love it, however I want even bigger and was comtemplating on getting something smaller for games that my 580 can't handle. Actually posted about this a couple of weeks back, but now im looking at the thought of using my 30incher for web surfing/reading and pictures, but looking into a 46-50inch plasma/lcd, but not sure if I will be dissapointed coming from my 2560X1600 Resolution. Although Ill be at least 6-8 feet away from the TV. What do you guys think? The TV would be for GAMING/MOVIES ONLY, anything with text or pictures would be my 30incher. Does that sound weird lol. Would the 1080p Tv look worse or better from a good viewing distance, because If the WOW factor will be gone then I wont even consider it. I know however my GPU would slash through 1080p like butter, but just not sure if I should get it. Coming from 2560X1600 from 1 foot away to 1080p looks like blocks lol but if the TV was 6-8 feet or even more would it look as good and also have that HUGE WOW factor Sorry to intrude on this thread I just though it would be appropriate to reply since Plasma tv is the subject

Alright, as someone who is unacquainted with LCDs, plasmas, and just HDTVs in general, I have a question: Is there one that works best for gaming? Say I want a new HDTV that I can connect my computer to via HDMI to play some Team Fortress 2 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Is there one that usually has a higher response time?

I ask this because I think I read a few years ago about how LCDs provide a better response time, thus reducing input lag and being better for gaming. This was a few years ago though. It could be one of the nicest televisions ever made, with extremely accurate colors and picture, but if there is input lag when playing games, then it's a no-go. So what should I look for in this case?

I believe Plasma produces much better colours especially when you are comparing it with a TN panel LCD. However, it draws more power.

Plasma power draw isn't that bad especially on blacks. The comparison may be worse nowadays with LED (white kind RGBs still use a lot) LCDs though. Plasma wins on response time and colors over LCD.

i just picked up the panasonic plasma 46" 1080 3d model they are selling at costco. normal price is 1599-700 mfg on the spot rebate, plus they give you a pair of the 150$ glasses. Also got a steal on the panasonic 3d bluray players for 120 on clearance there, spent about 1100$ instead of 2000$ after taxes. I hooked it up to my pc last night which normally sports a dell u2410 ips panel for my gaming. All i can say is wow. wow. and more wow. They have the ability to upconvert 2d images into 3d which looks amazing, and the native 3d content i was able to run on it blew my mind. I looked at ever lcd/led tv in a 20 mile radius in the last month and there is nothing that compars to this. only thing close i would recommend was a 46" sony 3d LED but they wanted 1800$ for it at costco .

I went with plasma for the respons time, it's faster then my dell ips by a noticeable amount. The color on it is simply amazing, and i pretty much got 3d tech for free with the price i paid.

I loaded up crysis 2 on in for the first time last night and haven't stopped smiling since

SO basically even coming from HP ZR30w to a panasonic Plasma I should be blown away even though im dropping from 1600P to 1080P..?? If thats the case I'll certainly go for it and my 580 won't struggle a single bit with 1080P
