I LOVE THIS FUCKING PHONE! I'm going to have sex with it tonight. Seriously. I'm gonna boink it.
I wont go into too much detail since we will probably have a hundred Droid threads by the end of the day.
Verizon opened early today but I went in at 9 AM and the big crowd was already gone. Got hooked up in short order and am so happy I may just have to fap before I can talk about it.
Its certainly the best hardware Android has ever seen. All metal and feels solid like the Nokia E71x. Keyboard is not fantasic but very usable. Screen in gorgeous and all around the hardware feels more serious than the G1. This is a mans phone, not a prissy little girly phone. It isnt sleek like the iPhone but it is definitely a quality item.
I wont go into all the awesomeness right now, but I will say there is a screen with data showing which items are using the most battery power. Since I disabled all the radios and turned brightness up full power (to play with it) the data says my backlight has used up more power than anything else.
They also include (right out of the box) an app that lets you instantly shut off any radio and also active sync, all in a 1-click widget.
Verizon has just officially got ownage on everybody else. More details and pics later today. For now: FUN TIME!!!
Also, I just ordered an Invisible Shield for the Droid. There is no Body Glove or custom Otterbox for this phone yet. I also cant find the dock for sale anywhere. No extended batteries either. Was hoping that stuff would be available for launch. Such is life.
I meant OUTSIDE of Verizon. I cant find decent accessories off the Verizon site. I wont buy direct from them. They charge too much.
No body glove?
Maybe your store or the online store was messed up. When I got the Droid today at the store, they had two different protective cases. Fairly certain one was a Body Glove, and the other was a clear hard protector.
I just went with a screen shield and the home dock. 10% off both for picking up two "accessories". Deal.
The glass screen makes me not worry about scratches, and wasn't going to get a film screen shield but what the hell. If I decided I did want it down the road, it would cost a few bucks more in the end.
However, I basically have the same things to say:
this phone. is. fucking. amazing.
Everything I wished I could do with my Omnia (WinMo6.5 modded, HTC M2D UI, great apps - better than the stock phone but still had a ton of issues that I kept looking past until the Droid forced me to look really hard at my phone ), is such a breeze with this phone. Plus living in the clouds with Google is exactly what I've always wanted. Just synced my Omnia with Outlook, exported the contacts to a file, imported to Gmail, and shortly after they showed up on the Droid. Facebook grabs pics and other contact info for the contacts it can match names up with (and my next chore is cleaning up my contacts to best take advantage of this, as a lot are one name only (first or last) so Facebook cannot do anything with them. The contact integration is just very well executed.
The app selection may be small in number, but I've already found quite a few apps that do what I want very well. The push nature of Google info like Gmail and Calendar is excellent too.
I am not quite a fan of that 5-way clicker to the right of the keyboard as it forces my right thumb into an awkward typing position, which leads to mistakes. Otherwise for what the phone is, I don't have complaints about the keyboard. If it were thicker, I'd complain about that. Always a trade up to be sexy. I too want to sex this thing up. :awe:
The keys work for me, and I think I'll be able to pound out some emails with some errors but ultimately rather pain free as I adjust to the keyboard.
I might be looking into an Android Market "Home" app, something like dxTop or aHome/OpenHome. More home screens would be nice.
Also, I think I know the problem of the "stutter" in regards to the home screen and app dock. It's not so much of a coding error but rather animation style. If you slowly move between pages or pull up the app dock relatively quickly but not flick crazy fast, it's smooth.
I wouldn't argue it's inefficient coding, and definitely not a performance problem. Something awkward in the way the scene is drawn that makes for the animation looking jerky when performed fast.
