Has anyone seen this on their Droid?

You power it on out of a sleep or shortly after when you go to do something, the screen will go black and the lights on the bottom are still on, then it 'partially reboots' where it just shows the DROID text in white on the screen?

I returned my first one when it did this 5 times or so because I saw a number of people online with this issue on both howard forums and moto forums. My second one ran much faster but now has after tonight done this to me as well.

The strange thing is that it still shows an uptime of 70 hours in my status page, sometimes on the other one it would actually reset this. I'm getting kind of fed up with this if it's going to be common. It's a strange problem but no one here has mentioned it.

Nope, my Droid has been pretty stable since I got it on Thursday.

My only issues are with apps sometimes having to force close, but otherwise the phone has been pretty stable.

I'm not sure wtf is going on then, second unit now that this happens to. My friend's is doing the same thing. I'm not sure if any of the apps that I have are causing it but I doubt it. My friend has no apps yet.

Installing SDK to attempt to pull some logs off this thing to see if I can figure out what is causing it.

Anyone know if you can rename the corporate calendar link? And the email link? I'd like to change them to reflect where I work if possible. I could have sworn I saw on howardforums somewhere a post that said how to do it, but I can't for the life of me find it again.

Might want to ask at the droidforums too. I don't know how to to do this.

I'd ask for another replacement. Bring it in while it's frozen so they can't claim it's not really freezing, just trying to process what you asked it to do.

Sweet, worked just fine. Can't say I'm sold on the $24/month data charge plus the $150 purchase. I don't use phones much anyways.

It is sort of pricey. However, after living with it for a week or so, I don't think I can go back. It's just way too convenient.

I guess the price isn't bad if work subsidizes it for you. I'm impressed with how fast 3g can be on a good phone. My Storm wasn't able to render a page anywhere this quick. With wifi on, this rivals and older desktop.

I just wish I got decent signal at work. I'm in the middle of a 3 story building and I only get voice coverage, and crappy at that. Data craps out when I'm at my desk. Occasionally it'll get a signal long enough to download a couple emails, otherwise it's completely silent until I go to lunch and then all my emails pour in when I get outside the building. I wonder if that can be fixed with an upcoming software/firmware update?

My Curve from Sprint almost always had at least 2 bars at my desk.

That sucks. My office is in the basement of the building I work in. Verizon users are the only ones that get a signal. And I get 3G at that.

I thought I read somewhere that Sprint uses Verizon towers, I don't know if that's true. Could something be wrong with your phone?

You get a new phone that does 4G.

Realistically, 4G isn't going to be rolled out to substantial areas for quite some time.

4G LTE is supposed to start deployment in early 2010, but yeah, we won't see it widespread for a while. I'll keep my Droid for 2 years, then upgrade in July 2011 to a better LTE smart phone.

I have a couple of coworkers down the hall from me with iPhones, one with a 3Gs and she can't get a 3g signal in our rather large, cinderblocked building. With my Droid, I just ran a speedtest and I'm getting 500 kbps DL speed.

The bad side about working in a bad reception area is that it is a battery drain. At work my percentages are 33% display, 25% phone idle, 19% cell stand by, Android system 9%.

In my dungeon, I get 1.38 Mbps per speedtest.net. Coworkers on AT&T: zero. If they stand in the right spot, they might get a signal.

I get frustrated at times with Verizon, but you really can't seem to beat the network (except when I visit my parents for Thanksgiving ).

edit: For what it's worth, my coworkers coverage is spotty even when outside the building.

Doesn't work like that. It doesn't freeze, it basically runtime resets. It's not a full OS crash like the ones that got shipped with bad dram have. I've been working with an android developer providing logs. At this point they acknowledge two different types of issues.

The first one, which is a full reboot showing the motorola logo as well as it resetting your uptime counter comes from a kernel panic because the kernel tries to page memory addresses that it can't (because of bad ram) and therefore it's a hard crash. The second type ONLY shows the white 'droid' text after freezing for about 5 seconds with a black screen. This is called the runtime reset and it happens to quite a few people. I don't see this one being a hardware issue due to how intermittent it is and how many people are seeing it. Most people see it once or twice on their phone every few days. It's definitely not an expected behavior according to the guy from android but they don't know what causes it and whether or not its software. I am providing all sorts of logs to them as well as a few other people on the issue.

It's definitely more widespread than just a few people.. I've seen a few guys on their 4th droid at this point and it still happens eventually. There must be some random set of circumstances when it happens. Right now I've been into the phone to set up the logging functionality to write directly to my SD card. There is a very basic unix-like shell on the phone where these options can be set. It's logging there until a reboot so if I get another runtime reset, I should be able to pull the log and provide it to them and look at it myself to see if I can see any specific condition that happens.

Right now the running theory among a few of us is that it's due to the phone's location functionality.. where it tries to locate a signal after being turned on. The problem only happens very close to a power button press to bring it out of a sleep or very shortly after when you attempt to read a notication or open a program.

I have the phone for another 2 weeks before I need to exchange it for another one. I figure I'll provide as much info as I can before I need to get it switched. I honestly don't believe this second type of crash is a hardware problem but hopefully it gets solved.

If anyone has ever seen that runtime reset on their phone please let me know and I can help you get the SDK going. It would be very helpful to have as many logs as possible. This problem is very apparent in the wild but it's not getting a lot of press, which is sort of frustrating since Motorola obviously put out a batch of fucked up phones and this second problem may or may not be related to it.

This is my second Droid... neither of them got decent signal in my building.

That's it... I'm returning the Droid. The new one is locking up again after long periods of being on the phone so I'm done. Guess I'll be going back to Sprint, which isn't so bad I guess... I'll be getting PAM back at a reduced rate for staying with them, and having a phone that gets signal where I work.

So who here has tried Google Navigation? I keep getting "GPS signal lost" while on the road even though the GPS signal is full (it suddenly just drops out and then I get it back again at full maybe 10 seconds later). This happens every few minutes or so. This is in the DC metropolitan area, so it's not like it's some place out there.

It worked perfectly for me... one of the reasons I hate to give up the phone.
