I've done a lot of reading and browsing along the net, lurking reading forums on reviews, errors and problems with the stuff I'm planning to buy.

So far, sometime along next week I'm planning to get this:

Asus P4P800-E Deluxe

Intel P4 3.0Ghz 800mhz fsb

Kingston HyperX PC3200 512mb

Albatron GeForce FX5900XTV 128mb

Do you guys think that there would be any chances of system incompatability? I want to make sure that I am getting what i pay for and expectations. I want a purely rock-solid system that is left on 24/7 when it's not in use as well.

I won't overclock it at all one bit, everything on default settings.

I'm upgrading from a:
Intel P3 800mhz 133fsb
Soyo 7vca mobo, Via 694x chipset
512mb pc133 random name brand ram
Gainward GeForce3 Ti200 128mb

yeah, it's pretty much an ancient rig so i'm having real high expectations of the new system that i'll be building. i don't want any disappointment, as this old one served me really long without any problems at all.

thanks!

Looks pretty basic and good. BTW, what case you going to get. If you're going to use an old one, make sure the power supply is sufficient.

I'd probably go for A64 3000+ (same price as 3.0ghz system but faster at gaming) and a Radeon 9800Pro as it is much faster in the latest shader intensive games in comparison to the 5900 series that lack in PS2.0 environment.

Your other option could be to buy a 2.8C processor and overclock it thus saving $ and get a cheaper motherboard than a P4P800-E Deluxe if you don't need all the features it comes with.

Also during the period of high memory prices the rule of thumb should be to buy more in size and forget about latency timings. Paying $138 for 512mb kingston memory is A LOT. You could get TwinMOS 512mb 2.5-3-3-8 $88 and spend that difference on a better cooler, better videocard, faster processor, etc. You could also get 2x512 for "only" $176 when you are about to pay $138 for 512 (kingston). Also don't be put off by the timings of this ram as I bet it will run 2.5-3-3-6 no problem at 2.8V and latency isn't an issue if you go with an A64 system (another plus for A64).

hmmm.. thanks for giving me some insight. i've always stuck with intel cpu's my whole life back from the days of a 486-dx cpu.

but recently i've heard a lot of commotion about the athlon64 FX as well, and how it outperforms the Intel P4 in game based applications.

for the new system, the main usage is going to be the high end games.
i plan on trying out Final Fantasy XI, Half-life 2, Doom 3.

If i were to switch the P4 3.0 / Asus P4P800 for a 64 3000+ / Asus K8V (both are about the same prices)
would I be getting more in terms of performance?

I'm reading some benchmarks around here and there, but nothing is specifically showing what I want to see!

also, thru further reading around earlier I figured that the 9800pro will beat the 5900XT because of nvidia's flaws and such, and since the price of the pro is only about $20 more, i figured i'll be replacing it with that.

yeah i'd go with the A64 and 9800 pro instead. also if you're gonna be playing HL2 and Doom 3 and the like on this system i'd definitely go with 1 gig of ram instead of 512 mb. the games coming out now are memory hogs and take up a lot of ram.

I would also suggest getting a 9800pro or above for a video card. None of this fx5900 business. ...But overall, it'll be quite a step up. Enjoy!

For games, DEFINITELY the Athlon64 3000+ and a Radeon 9800pro and a gig of memory.
