Actually top of the line Corsair XMS26400 (DDR2-800) memory was just $225 with a $40 rebate. That memory is rated at 1.9v which is below many others and very much more stable/compatable for the time being.
I priced things out and I can build a C2D with an Asus AB5 mobo, E6400, and 2GB of Corsair DDR2-800 for just over $600
This is still more expensive than getting a x1950 videocard which will help more than a simple CPU upgrade will. And that's all you're doing, upgrading the CPU. Buying new motherboard and memory just to get a newer CPU. It's ok if you can afford it and really gotta have it, but there's 2 things you must remember and I fail to do it myself.
1) your system is never fast enough. There's always bigger, faster, better stuff out there.
2) Ask yourself this question. Is my computer fast enough for what I do with it? If not how much more power and memory do I necessarily need to do what I want to do?
To me going from 100fps to 130fps is really not a big deal. Now if you were say doing alot of video editing and encoding then the time saved may be worth it.
