Anyone go from a Opty 165 to a E6300?

With all the talk about Intel Conroe systems I'm really curious if the switch would be worth it?

My system:
SN25P
Opty 165 @ 2.7GHz
2GB Gskill ddr500
X1900XT

So, would it be worth jumping ship and going in a new direction?

We all know how more powerful the conroe's are, but are you going to really use that extra power? What are you doing that your opty 2.7ghz cant handle?

Moving to Conroe would mean a complete PC build, is this worth it to you? When I build my computers I only build if my current one is noticably slow. But of course alot of PC enthusiasts usually build to have the best, not neccesarily because their current PC is slow.

I would suggest you update the vid card every now and then instead.

Don66,

I am in the same boat...I have a Opty 165 @ 2.8 (I can go over 3.0 but I have to start playing with voltages)...I was thinking about moving to Conroe...

On the other hand, Intel Quad-Core will be out the end of this year and AMD's native Quad-Core (K8L) should be out in less than a year...

For me...I am waiting...2.8 is fine for me...so fvcking what if the Conroe can rip a CD one minute faster...it is not worth the money to buy a complete new system yet...unless you are a hardcore gamer, what you have now should hold for another year.

for the majority of games you shouldn't need to upgrade, for oblivion there will be a difference though.

other than that, what do you do that takes up 2.7 X 2?

I beg to differ. Oblivion is not a twitchy fast paced FPS game. Most really high end systems (Opteron/X2) with a x1900xt or a 9700GT (or better) will not have any issues in the game. The game won't play noticably different if you upgrade your CPU to a C2D. Now upgrading your videocard will be a more worthwile investment and cheaper. You will be able to run higher resolutions and AA/AF levels. Get a x1950 or something along those lines and that will last a very long while with your setup.

What I mean to say is that in a game like Oblivion you don't need 100fps for it to be smooth, but keeping a solid 30fps is a good idea.

I'm a hardcore gamer and I don't see any real reason to upgrade from my x2 3800+ running at 2.6Ghz with a x1900xt(running xtx speeds) to a C2D. I'm still considering it because I'm a sucker for tech stuff and always want to have the newest things. In reality I don't think my FPS is so horrid with ANY game I have tried that I need to upgrade. It's not hard to skip over an AMD64/X2 for a C2D if you're comming from a P4 or AthlonXP.

Thanks for the replies..

I needed some solid advice to keep things in perspective.

I think I'll hold off upgrading for awhile.

Actually top of the line Corsair XMS26400 (DDR2-800) memory was just $225 with a $40 rebate. That memory is rated at 1.9v which is below many others and very much more stable/compatable for the time being.

I priced things out and I can build a C2D with an Asus AB5 mobo, E6400, and 2GB of Corsair DDR2-800 for just over $600

This is still more expensive than getting a x1950 videocard which will help more than a simple CPU upgrade will. And that's all you're doing, upgrading the CPU. Buying new motherboard and memory just to get a newer CPU. It's ok if you can afford it and really gotta have it, but there's 2 things you must remember and I fail to do it myself.

1) your system is never fast enough. There's always bigger, faster, better stuff out there.
2) Ask yourself this question. Is my computer fast enough for what I do with it? If not how much more power and memory do I necessarily need to do what I want to do?

To me going from 100fps to 130fps is really not a big deal. Now if you were say doing alot of video editing and encoding then the time saved may be worth it.

You're wrong on the memory.... Corsair CM2X1024 6400C3 is considered one of the fastest memory modules out and it runs almost $500 at Newegg...over $500 at Monarch.
