I cooked some roast belly pork and Boston baked beans the other day and it was really, really good and it got me to thinking that American food is one area of food that I've never really got into.

I'd really like some good recipe ideas, they dont need to be detailed just give me the gist and I'll work the details out.

Bonus points for cajun or the like, minus points for burgers or mac and cheese.

Pan Fried Pork Chops
Season with Lawry's Seasoning Salt and fresh cracked pepper
Run through flour, egg wash, and Italian seasoned bread crumbs
Pan fry in olive oil and butter.
Depending on thickness, you may have to finish in the oven for a few minutes.
Don't overcook.

Serve with applesauce
Homemade mashed potatos (lots of butter and sour cream) and gravy
Green Beans, pan fried with bacon, garlic, and onions.
Homemade buttermilk biscuits

That's a good comfort food / American meal that my family loves.

I've always liked BBQ and Southern cooking and Soul food. Slow cooked ribs, brisket, etc. I don't eat it too often, but it's freaking delicious. Also meatloaf. Love me some meatloaf. The problem with BBQ is you need a smoker and/or decent grill and I have neither. Soul food you just need to have a defibrillator or doctor on-hand. And a fridge full of butter and a pantry full of oil. And a deep frier.

Curious to see other replies from folks who cook. I'm much more of an eater and not much of a chef.

2 slices of white bread
Peanut butter
Jelly

Spread one slice with the Peanut butter, spread the other with the jelly. Put the 2 slices together making sure the jelly and peanut butter come together. If you want to take the recipe to another level, add a glass of milk.

oh and.. i could be wrong but i think american food is mostly shitty. A lot of it is bastardized european food with little to no connection to the land and the ingredients. Not bashing on nouveau American cuisine, but the legacy from the 1950s with frozen dinners and canned food definitely did no service to American cuisine. native American cuisine ofc is pretty much nonexistent, and everything after that is imported cultural food.

That sounds good but its a lot like the Italian recipes I already do (apart from the scones, I cant do scones with a savoury course )

I sort of wanted stuff you guys do that I wont find/know here.

Bollocks, I'm betting you have a crap ton of good food.

I'm probably going to be slightly less interested in the stuff with a Euro ancestry as I live here but you guys have a long history of melding the worlds foods together.

Make red beans n' rice according to this recipe:

http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/red-beans-and-rice-recipe/index.html

Do not omit the pickled pork, and I insist on some authentic andouille sausage with chives atop it.

The recipe is actually very simple if you have all the key elements, i.e. the pickled pork and a properly sized dutch oven. I usually make an oversized batch of pickled pork, and then vacuum seal and freeze properly-sized portions specifically for this recipe.

The recipe covered in AB's TV show:

protip: boneless country style 'ribs' are actually presliced pork shoulder and so it's easy to get the right amount of pig for the pickled pork.

You can make a decent brisket or ribs in an oven without a smoker. It just needs to cook low and slow (maybe 275*F for about an hour per pound of meat).
You don't have access to liquid smoke, so you'll have to make up for that with a good spice rub.

That sounds good, similar to some stuff I've had in Cuba. Making the pickled pork looks like a pain in the arse though.

Andouille sausage isnt like the French Andouillette is it, the stuff that tastes like someones just belched in your face and appears to be made mostly from lungs?

I don't know if this is intended to be a tip for him or me, but the above is not news to me anyway. I prefer to buy about a 5-7 lb chunk of shoulder and dice it up for pickling. The recipe calls for 12oz (but I use 16) so I vacuum freeze 16oz portions. That way I don't have to pickle a new batch of pork every time I want to prepare som RB&R.

people pay more for that sh!t than actual whipped cream.

Would like to try jambalaya and shrimp creole. I'm going to struggle to get fresh catfish here.

Jalapeño cornbread sound interesting.

What the fuck are grits?

The pickling isn't so hard. Its just a boil of certain spices and vinegar, then seal everything up in a 1-gallon zip-top freezer bag and set in the fridge for a few days.

I am not sure how cajun andouille might differ from the french sausage, but it IS good in my opinion, anyway. Another type of SMOKED sausage would probably suffice as a replacement.
